Book excerpt: In recent decades, cytopathology has assumed an increasing role in the primary diagnosis of mass lesions owing to its ability to deliver rapid, non-invasive, and timely information. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the role of cytology at various body sites. The diagnostic details covered are abbreviated in comparison with those in pathology texts. Instead, a more clinical approach is taken, with the focus on the advantages and limitations of techniques and the key features of entities that are important to clinicians. Pathological–clinical correlation is highlighted throughout the book, ensuring that it will be highly relevant for clinicians. In particular, physicians who deal with oncology patients will find it to be a rich source of guidance on how to use and understand cytopathology in the diagnosis and exclusion of malignancy.

Download or read book Effusion Cytology written by Parvin Ganjei-Azar, MD and published by Demos Medical Publishing. This book was released on 2011-02-22 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, cytology of body cavity fluids is an integral part of cancer staging. A positive diagnosis indicates a high-stage (III or IV) cancer in a majority of instances. General pathologists and cytotechnologists rely on routine cytomorphologic criteria to help oncologists in their staging of cancer patients. The diagnostic clarity, however, is challenged by many false negatives and occasional false positive results. The former is usually followed by an unnecessary surgical procedure in the case of an under-staged cancer and the latter may prevent treatment of a potentially curable disease due to a falsely up-staged cancer. Effusion Cytology is a practical manual in diagnosis and interpretation of body cavity fluid (BCF) specimens. This highly illustrated volume will provide handy information for the residents, fellows and general pathologists with limited basic knowledge in the area of cytopathology. The book provides a step-by-step guide to evaluation of BCF specimens with the specific goal of identification of malignancies. Use of ancillary techniques such as immunocytochemistry is discussed where appropriate. Special attention is given to the formulation of final cytologic reports of the diagnosis of difficult cases. Features of Effusion Cytology Include: Focus on Cancer Diagnosis: The book seeks to answer the simple question - Does this fluid represent malignancy? Practicality: Offers practical approaches to resolving the numerous daily technical and diagnostic problems encountered in a cytology laboratory dealing with body cavity fluid specimens Use of Limited Panel of Tumor Markers by Immunocytochemistry (ICC): Describes a simple innovative technique for applying ICC to cytologic smears A Practical Guide to Formulate Final Cytologic Reports: The reader will be guided as to how to convey any diagnostic difficulty or issue to the attending physician

Book FNA Cytology in the Diagnosis of Lymphoma

Download or read book FNA Cytology in the Diagnosis of Lymphoma written by Lambert Skoog and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2009 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive color manual Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) became important for the cytology of the enlarged lymph node in the 1950s and 1960s and was accepted in the diagnosis of various types of lymphadenitis and metastatic disease. The diagnosis of lymphoma by FNA cytology, however, remained controversial for many years, as FNA smears did not allow the evaluation of growth pattern. Only later with the introduction of immunocytochemistry on FNA material it became possible to conclusively diagnose the majority of lymphomas with an accuracy comparable to that of histopathology. Other ancillary techniques such as FISH and PCR can now also be applied successfully to FNA material. These facts together with the excellent clinical performance of FNA sampling should increase the spread of the technique. This comprehensive manual presents the cytomorphologic and immunocytochemical characteristics of both non-Hodgkin and Hodgkin lymphomas. It discusses the technical, methodological aspects of lymphoma diagnosis and describes the cytologic features of reactive lymphoid lesions and the major types of neoplastic lymphoid lesions, based on the most recent (2001) WHO lymphoma classification. Key cytologic and immunologic features are listed to facilitate a conclusive diagnosis of the different lesions. This publication will be of immense value to clinicians such as cytopathologists, pathologists, oncologists, and hematologists involved in the clinical work-up and management of patients with lymph node lesions.

Book Atlas of Cytopathology and Radiology

Download or read book Atlas of Cytopathology and Radiology written by Ritu Nayar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-04 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this atlas is to guide pathologists and radiologists in the accurate triage and diagnosis of deep seated mass lesions biopsied under ultrasound, CT Scan or fluoroscopic guidance. Fine needle aspiration cytology has become the foremost diagnostic modality in recent years for the diagnosis of mass lesions, including primary and recurrent neoplasms and masses of non-neoplastic and infectious etiology. An essential requirement in the accurate diagnosis of these masses is the correlation of cytomorphology with the radiological findings and adequate triage of acquired material during the biopsy procedure. The cytologic appearance (fine needle aspiration smears, touch preparations, cell blocks and core biopsy), gross surgical resected specimen (where available on follow-up) and imaging findings will be illustrated to provide a complete pathologic-radiologic correlation of the entities discussed. Collection methods and correlation with ancillary studies such as flow cytometry, microbiologic cultures, cytogenetics and immunohistochemistry will be described. The importance of specimen type and cytologic and radiologic techniques will be emphasized.
