Book The Extramural Sanctuary of Demeter and Persephone at Cyrene Libya Final Reports Volume VI

Download or read book The Extramural Sanctuary of Demeter and Persephone at Cyrene Libya Final Reports Volume VI written by T. V. Buttrey and published by UPenn Museum of Archaeology. This book was released on 1998-01-29 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coins, for reasons that do not always make sense, are often treated by field excavators as more reliable chronological indexes than other classes of artifacts. This always makes their discovery a welcome event, especially when they are silver or gold, which tend to survive in the ground in a more recognizable state than their bronze counterparts. The Red Figure pottery does not have quite the same chronological relevance as the coins but does on occasion contribute to the dating of archaeological contexts. Its often high quality and interesting variety of shapes has already generated commentary elsewhere in addition to what is presented here. University Museum Monograph, 97

  • Author : Richard Posamentir
  • Publisher : University of Texas Press

  • ISBN : 0292743718
  • Pages : 510 pages

Download or read book Chersonesan Studies 1 written by Richard Posamentir and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2012-02-02 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chersonesan Studies 1 presents the painted grave stelai of the Early Hellenistic necropolis of Chersonesos Taurike, a Greek city on the northern shore of the Black Sea. This unique collection of over one hundred objects is of major interest to students of ancient art and Greek culture. Their polychrome decoration has been extraordinarily well preserved, a rarity in the ancient world. They compose a remarkable, even unique, body of evidence of Greek funerary memorial sculpture: their shapes are gender-specific, their depicted objects are gender- and age-specific, and they can be ascribed to a handful of specific workshops. Their surprising uniformity requires an explanation, since comparable assemblages from other parts of the Greek world show substantial diversity in all these aspects. This book provides the first complete catalog and description of the stelai, together with full-color illustrations of all the significant stelai and many details. Through his painstaking recovery and reassembling of fragments, as well as the use of advanced photographic techniques, Richard Posamentir has been able to add a whole new dimension to the study of these artifacts. The volume covers the history of the stelai, analysis of the workshops, and reconstruction of the necropolis that the stelai originally graced. A comparison chapter discusses how the stelai fit into the context of Greek funerary art and provides insights into the culture and society of a city on the Black Sea.

Book The Expansion of Christianity

Download or read book The Expansion of Christianity written by Roderic Mullen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2003-12-01 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume covers the geographical spread of Christianity in its first three centuries. It is arranged by continents - Asia, Europe and Africa - to show the gradual development of Christian communities down to the Council of Nicaea in 325. The area surveyed stretches from Wales to the borders of India, and from the Northern coasts of the Black Sea to the plains of Morocco. The result is a picture not only of the outward development of early Christianity but of the variety that existed within it as well.

Book The Hellenistic West

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jonathan R. W. Prag
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2013-10-24
  • ISBN : 1107782929
  • Pages : 502 pages

Download or read book The Hellenistic West written by Jonathan R. W. Prag and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-24 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the Hellenistic period has become increasingly popular in research and teaching in recent years, the western Mediterranean is rarely considered part of the 'Hellenistic world'; instead the cities, peoples and kingdoms of the West are usually only discussed insofar as they relate to Rome. This book contends that the rift between the 'Greek East' and the 'Roman West' is more a product of the traditional separation of Roman and Greek history than a reflection of the Hellenistic-period Mediterranean, which was a strongly interconnected cultural and economic zone, with the rising Roman republic just one among many powers in the region, east and west. The contributors argue for a dynamic reading of the economy, politics and history of the central and western Mediterranean beyond Rome, and in doing so problematise the concepts of 'East', 'West' and 'Hellenistic' itself.

Book Tumulus as Sema

  • ISBN : 3110267500
  • Pages : 1168 pages

Download or read book Tumulus as Sema written by Olivier Henry and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-04-11 with total page 1168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tumuli were the most widespread form of monumental tombs in the ancient world. Their impact on landscape, their allurement as well as their symbolic reference to a glorious past can still be felt today. The need of supra-regional and cross-disciplinary examination of this unique phenomenon led to an international conference in Istanbul in 2009. With almost 50 scholars from 12 different countries participating, the conference entitled TumulIstanbul created links between fields of research which would not have had the opportunity to meet otherwise. The proceedings of TumulIstanbul revolve around the question of the symbolic significance of burial mounds in the 1st millennium BC in the Eastern Mediterranean and Black-Sea regions, providing further insight into Kurgan neighbours from Eurasia.
