These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside Cyrano de Bergerac An Heroic Comedy in Five Acts: Look inside the book: Of the faithfulness of his rendering those acquainted with the French language will easily judge, as they can have under the same cover the English of the translator and the French of the dramatist, and they will thus, it is hoped, acquire a clear and adequate conception of the beautiful picture, which, thanks to Edmond Rostand, has restored life and brilliancy to the somewhat faded features of that eccentric philosopher, poet, hero and gentleman, Savinien Hercule de Cyrano Bergerac. ...At all events, those who were consulted, including the eminent publishers, and the distinguished writer of the Introduction to this book, freely agreed with the author in his opinion that publication under the foregoing conditions could do no harm, while it might effect considerable good, were it only as an example in many respects, proving, among other things, that there are those, even in America, for whom impunity does not constitute right. About Edmond Rostand, the Author: His first play, a burlesque, Les romanesques was produced on 21 May 1894 at the Théâtre Français; it would be adapted in 1960 by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt into the long-running American musical The Fantasticks. ...In L'Aiglon he chose a subject from Napoleonic history, suggested probably by Henri Welschinger's Roi de Rome, 1811-32 (1897), which contained much new information about the unhappy life of the Duke of Reichstadt, son of Napoleon I, and Marie Louise, under the surveillance of Metternich at the Schönbrunn Palace.

Book excerpt: This adaptation by celebrated graphic novelist Kyle Baker and writer Peter David presents the tragedy and romance of Rostand's 17th century romance story. Cyrano de Bergerac yearns to confess his love to his cousin Roxanne; he is a talented poet and musician who should have no trouble doing so. Yet his large nose has convinced him that no woman would ever be interested in him. When Cyrano finds that Roxanne is enamored with the handsome Christian de Neuvillette, he offers to use his poetic prowess to help Christian win Roxanne's heart. As the three's lives intertwine throughout the years, Rostand spins a tale of romance and heartbreak that is wonderfully captured by Peter David and Kyle Baker.

Book excerpt: Another delightful and sharply pointed excursion into the topics of the day, and of our day as well, with Gilbert Keith Chesterton. Here he uses his wit and mastery of paradox to bring into focus a number of historical persons who in many ways typify the people who presently shape our world and who in their own right have already shaped Western civilization. These reprinted magazine articles are filled with his good natured wit and devastating ability to use reductio ad absurdum to destroy the popular myths that drive our society at full-speed into, and expose the utter nonsense that underlies, secular humanism. You will come away with yet another new collection of wonderful quotes. Aeterna Press

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: a few words from the Author Every epoch had its "Word" yet it was emphasized, sometimes repeated combustive to shake the dormant Man we all bear as a sleeping Giant of Creativity. Excluding nothing Human as alien- embracing all as part of the Body, recognition of Vision, Hearing and Perception, pondering on each tiny incident in Life until focusing on one point of concentration, creates a blend of "Word," that touches the most sensible Souls and the most distant Galaxies of the heart. After so many long hours of isolated work and after so many hours of active participation in Life, we bring this book in a traditional format echoing the Primordial message to the Present and Future vocabulary for our Epoch. We do hope these verses shall bring the pleasure of reading, conveying the message of Unity of the Mankind and much hope to all. Fahredin Shehu

Download or read book The Romancers written by Edmond Rostand and published by . This book was released on 1899 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his play "The Romancers" Edmond Rostand satirizes the sentimentalism and escapism of Romantic literature of his times. Percinet is the only son of Bergamin and Sylvette is the only daughter of Pasquinot. Their fathers who are widowers and neighbors make a plan to marry their children with each other. In order to accomplish this, the fathers separate their children so that they may love each other the more, and desire to be re-united. As a part of their plan, Bergamin warns his son to stay away from Pasquinot and his daughter. Similarly, Pasquinot also warns his daughter that she should not be near to his mortal enemy Bergamin and his son. Inspite of their fathers' warnings, Percinet and Sylvette fall in love. They think themselves as the counterparts of Romeo and Juliet. They are worried that their love will also end in tragedy like that of Romeo and Juliet. They are emotional, daydreaming teenagers who have recently finished their school studies. They are deeply influenced by romantic literature of their times, especially by the romantic play "Romeo and Juliet" of William Shakespeare. They are so in love with each other that they desire to die rather than separate with each other. Bergamin then hires Straforel and his company for a fake kidnapping. At midnight hours, when Percinet and Sylvette are about to meet, Straforel with his company kidnap Sylvette and put her into the sedan chair. Percinet hears the cry of Sylvette, jumps over the wall and fights with his sword. At the same time, as planned, Pasquinot enters and calls Percinet a hero. He suggests Bergamin to put an end to their enmity and arrange the marriage of their children. Thus in the end the two children seem like puppets in the hands of their fathers. - MeroSpark Cloud Reference, http://www.merospark.com
