Book Cyprus 1974 Anatomy of an Invasion

Download or read book Cyprus 1974 Anatomy of an Invasion written by Vassilis Fouskas and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-13 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional wisdom and ideologies hold that responsibility for the partition of the Republic of Cyprus in the wake of Turkey’s multiple advances on the island in summer 1974 rests on domestic ethnic and religious tensions between the Turks and the Greeks. This book, drawing on a wealth of archival material, shows that this is not the case at all. As the detailed report of the United Nations mediator, Galo Plaza, had shown in 1965, the Turks and the Greeks living on the island could easily have co-existed if left alone to determine their future. This did not happen. The partition of the island had been inscribed in NATO’s policy since the 1950s, rewarding the strongest component of NATO’s southern flank, Turkey, at the expense of Greece, the weaker component. The volume details the role of CIA agents in Greece and the machinations of the Greek junta of Dimitrios Ioannides to overthrow the charismatic leader of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, who had been fighting for an independent and non-aligned Cyprus. It also explains how the partition of Cyprus in 1974 has opened up prospects for the partition of the Aegean Sea between Greece and Turkey, with Greece’s eastern Aegean islands becoming ‘NATOlands’ in the service of the war against Russia. The volume is an essential reading for researchers and students of the history and politics of Cyprus, Greece, Turkey and south-eastern Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civil war inevitably causes shifts in state boundaries, demographics, systems of rule, and the bases of legitimate authority—many of the markers of national identity. Yet a shared sense of nationhood is as important to political reconciliation as the reconstruction of state institutions and economic security. After Civil War compares reconstruction projects in Bosnia, Cyprus, Finland, Greece, Kosovo, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Spain, and Turkey in order to explore how former combatants and their supporters learn to coexist as one nation in the aftermath of ethnopolitical or ideological violence. After Civil War synthesizes research on civil wars, reconstruction, and nationalism to show how national identity is reconstructed over time in different cultural and socioeconomic contexts, in strong nation-states as well as those with a high level of international intervention. Chapters written by anthropologists, historians, political scientists, and sociologists examine the relationships between reconstruction and reconciliation, the development of new party systems after war, and how globalization affects the processes of peacebuilding. After Civil War thus provides a comprehensive, comparative perspective to a wide span of recent political history, showing postconflict articulations of national identity can emerge in the long run within conducive institutional contexts. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1974 the Greek colonels ousted the Greek-Cypriot leader of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, and Turkey retaliated by invading and seizing a third of the island. Cyprus remains split in two, like Berlin before the wall came down, bristling with troops and spying bases, and permanently policed by the United Nations. Henry Kissinger claimed he could do nothing to stop the coup because of the Watergate crisis, but this book presents evidence to support the view that it was no failure of American foreign policy, but the realization of a long-term plot. The authors describe the strategic reasons for Washington's need to divide the island. Their account encompasses an international cast of characters that includes Eden, Eisenhower, Nixon, Kissinger, Wilson, Callaghan, Grivas, and the leaders of the two halves of the divided island, Clerides and Denktas.

Book Cyprus And Its People

Book excerpt: This edited volume of interdisciplinary essays considers the aspects of nation, identity, and collective experience in the notoriously divided island of Cyprus. The contributors examine the role of international politics particularly the involvement of Greece and Turkey and examine the changing relationship between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities since 1955. The book challenges prevailing assumptions about political and cultural identity in Cyprus and theorizes on the prospects for mobilizing more multi-dimensional and workable formations of community on Cyprus. The result is a tightly conceived volume, divided into sections of national identity, political possibilities, the location of culture, and social and psychological perspectives.

Book A Business of Some Heat

Download or read book A Business of Some Heat written by Francis Henn and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The island of Cyprus, long troubled by inter-communal strife, exploded onto the world stage with the Athens-inspired coup against President Makarios and Turkey's invasion that followed. This resulted in the partition of the Island, which was policed by UNFICYP under the most testing conditions. These dramatic events are described here for the first time in this book which examines the political and military background, the Greek and Turkish forces and the make-up and operations of the multi-national UN Force. The difficult situation was further complicated by the Yom Kippur War and the rapid despatch of a significant part of UNFICYP to Egypt.

Book Great Power Politics in Cyprus

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume approaches foreign interventions in Cyprus from two different angles: a vertical angle, which corresponds to a case-by-case historical analysis of foreign interventions which have taken place throughout the modern history of Cyprus, and a horizontal angle, which corresponds to the implementation of systemic models of analysis in approaching foreign interventions in Cyprus. Furthermore, the volume deals with domestic perceptions formed as a result of foreign interventions in Cyprus, focusing particularly on their impact on the politics and public rhetoric of the Cyprus problem, especially as regards the Greek Cypriot community.

Book Voices From A Forgotten Siege

Download or read book Voices From A Forgotten Siege written by Victoria Kikis and published by . This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about one country's invation of another. The siezing of properties, the upending of lives and livelihoods, the generations-long fight for a return to things that once were. Cyprus, simply put, is an island nation in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. She stands at the cultural and historical crossroads betwen Europe and Asia. In July 1974, Turkey set in motion the invasion of Cyprus. The result was the occupation of the northern part of the country and their creation of the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus, a "country" that is only recognized by Turkey itself. 2019 marks the 45th anniversary of this conflict. As you will read, the conditions of the occupied territory have changed little since then. One is left to wonder why this is so. The people of north Cyprus, whose lives were ripped from them, would embrace a return to their family homes. Their hearts are always heavy with the losses they have endured. One must listen toothier voices and ask why.

Book Phase Line Attila

Book excerpt: "This monograph will prove to be one of the more valuable works ever written on the efficacy of modern era amphibious warfare. While many students of military affairs have assumed that large-scale forcible entry amphibious operations are a thing of the past, the authors have done an outstanding job, in just eight concise and well-written chapters, to demonstrate how amphibious warfare, in combination with other joint operations, can prove decisive on modern-day battlefields. Covering a little-known combat operation that incredibly involved two neighboring North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) allies--Greece and Turkey--the 1974 battle known in Turkey as Operation Star Drop-4 and erroneously in the West as Operation Attila, took place on the perpetually restive island nation of Cyprus. Moreover, the authors have finally brought to light what is "arguably only one of two such [amphibious] operations" fought since 1945 that involved a substantially opposed landing. The operation also included the heavy use of airborne, airmobile, naval surface, and other follow-on armored forces that proved decisive toward relative Turkish success on Cyprus in 1974"--
