But the cost by which that peace was earned was great—the lives of the Romanian pack alphas, and Cypher, king of the warlocks. Now, the Great Luna has declared a period of mourning, allowing her children a brief respite in their battle against the Order of the Burning Claw. A violation of the command means certain death. But peace doesn’t extend to everyone. Lilly Pierce, the surviving widow of the warlock king, must now take his place as the leader of the warlock race. Unfortunately, she’s in no condition to do it. Her heart has been shattered. Lilly has found love twice in her life, and both times, it’s been ripped away. Now, the warlock clans are looking to their new queen for guidance, or waiting for her to falter. To keep her throne, Lilly will have to prove she’s worthy of it, or risk losing more than just her title. The last thing the queen needs in her grief-stricken state is to start hallucinating... Murderer. Traitor. Outlaw. These are just a few of the words that describe, Myanin, the disgraced djinn warrior. And for a time, those words didn’t bother her. But as the djinn becomes more acquainted with the inner workings of the Order of the Burning Claw, she begins to understand how truly evil her fellow supernaturals can be. Is that really the person she wants to be? Is that the life she wants to lead? Not long ago, Myanin would have done anything to get back at her former lover, Thadrick, including murder. But an encounter with her Creator has the djinn questioning everything, including whether she is beyond redemption. Two women, both suffering loss, both languishing in their misery, both faced with impossible choices. Is it possible the queen and the djinn could find salvation in one another?

Download or read book Decolonizing Literacies written by Towani Duchscher and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-27 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the ways in literacy has been used as a weapon and a means for settler colonialism, challenging colonized definitions of literacy and centring relationships as key to broadening understandings. It begins by confronting the multiple ways that settler colonialism has used literacy and definitions of literacy as a gatekeeper to participation in society. In response to settler colonialism’s violent acts of extraction, displacement, and replacement enacted upon the land, the resources, the people, and understandings of literacy, the editors propose a unique approach to decolonizing understandings of literacy through a triangulation of disruption, reclamation, and remembering relationships. This is enacted and explored through a range of diverse chapter contributions, written in the form of stories, poems, artworks, theatres, and essays, allowing the authentic voices of the authors to shine through, and opening up the English Language Arts as a space for engagement and interpretation with diverse, racialized understandings of literacy. Disrupting Eurocentric, colonized understandings that narrowly define literacy as reading and writing the colonial word, and advancing the movement to decolonize education, it will be of key interest to scholars, researchers, and educators with interest in literacy education, decolonizing education, anti-racist education, inclusive education, land-based literacy, and arts-based literacy.
Download or read book Veil of Dawn s Promise written by Joe Sarkic and published by Joe Sarkic. This book was released on 2023-12-25 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Veil of Dawn’s Promise" unfolds in the futuristic city of Cyronis, a towering beacon of human ingenuity and technological prowess, set against a planet scarred by past mistakes. The city, under the vigilant surveillance of an entity known as the Watchers, encapsulates a perfect blend of advanced technology and strict societal control. Amidst this backdrop, the narrative follows Elysa Jane Hawthorne, a pivotal figure within Cyronis's intricate data nexus, who finds herself entangled in a web of clandestine rebellion and hidden truths. The story opens in the vibrant heart of Cyronis, the marketplace, where the rhythms of daily life are suddenly disrupted by a meticulously orchestrated assault. Shadowy figures, members of a terrorist faction known as The Veil of Dawn, execute a series of attacks, leaving the city in disarray and the populace reeling from the unexpected violence. The aftermath exposes the vulnerabilities of Cyronis’s seemingly impenetrable surveillance system and sets the stage for a deeper conflict. Elysa, grappling with fragmented dreams and a sense of a lost past, finds these disturbances unsettlingly close to her personal sphere. As she delves deeper, she discovers connections to her own life and a much larger conspiracy that extends to the very core of Cyronis's governance and its artificial intelligence, Orion. The story navigates through layers of political intrigue, personal discovery, and societal upheaval. Central to the narrative is the complex relationship between technology and humanity, explored through the lens of Elysa’s experiences and her interactions with Orion. The novel adeptly portrays the struggle for identity and freedom within a system designed for absolute control. Elysa’s journey is one of self-discovery, as she uncovers hidden aspects of her past and the true nature of her existence within Cyronis. "Veil of Dawn" masterfully weaves themes of surveillance, autonomy, and the human spirit against a backdrop of a futuristic dystopia. It presents a world where the lines between human emotion and technological advancements blur, creating a compelling narrative that questions the very essence of human freedom and the price of security.

Download or read book The Well of The Dead written by Clive Allan and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The constable had ducked under the lintel and cautiously edged his way into the property with a stolidness becoming of his twenty-two years of police service. What he had discovered inside had brought him staggering out again, pale and staring, the sweet taste of vomit rising in his throat.” In April 2010, the brutal murders of distillery owner, Duncan Fraser, and his wife Laura, shock the small rural community of Glenruthven in the Scottish Highlands. The ensuing police investigation unearths an ancient clan feud… and a mystery dating back to 1746 and the Battle of Culloden. Detective Inspector Neil Strachan, who we first met in Clive’s first novel, The Drumbeater, once again finds himself delving into the past, as he and his partner, Sergeant Holly Anderson, go head to head with a ruthless and violent criminal, apparently obsessed with his Jacobite ancestry. Strachan also faces problems of his own. His long-term partner is acting strangely, causing him to suspect that she is having an affair. His determination to bring the Frasers’ killer to justice, and to uncover the truth behind his erring partner’s behaviour, take him on a journey to a place he never wanted to be. It is a place where his personal and professional priorities become blurred; a place where both his judgement and reputation are on the line. The Well of the Dead is not the usual dysfunctional, urban detective novel, but one in which the adventures are played out amongst the rugged beauty of Britain’s last great wilderness. Inspired by Mark Billingham, Brian Callison and Elly Griffiths, Clive Allan’s latest novel is a gripping crime thriller with an historical twist. It will primarily appeal to readers of Scottish and detective fiction. Clive’s first novel, The Drumbeater, received large amounts of media attention and was featured in Scots News, The Scots Magazine, Narpo News, Scottish Field Magazine and Police World. “A gripping and intelligent tale which seamlessly spans 250 years told through wonderfully authentic characters. Superb!” – Graham Bartlett, Times bestselling co-author of Death Comes Knocking.
