Imogen, Cymbeline's daughter is in love with Posthumus, but her stepmother wants Imogen to marry Cloten, the queen's son. When Imogen balks and secretly marries Posthumus, the king has him banished. Before his departure, Posthumus gives Imogen a bracelet, and she gives him a ring. Posthumus arrives in Rome, where he brags of his wife's beauty and fidelity. When Iachimo questions this, he and Posthumus propose a wager that Iachimo can't seduce Imogen. Iachimo hastens to Britain, where he is rebuffed several times by Imogen. Meanwhile, the malicious stepmother has arranged for her physician to create a poison for Pisanio, a servant and friend of Posthumus. The physician, distrustful of the wicked queen, prepares instead a type of sleeping potion. This is given to Pisanio.Iachimo, still striving for Imogen, is nothing if not crafty. The rogue hides in a chest carried into Imogen's room, then steals her bracelet while she sleeps. He also takes note of a mole not easily seen. Armed with detail and her bracelet, Iachimo tells Posthumus that he has won the bet, whereupon Posthumus gives up the ring that Imogen gave him. Posthumus, considerably peeved at Imogen, sends a letter to Britain instructing Pisanio to kill her for him. Pisanio instead warns Imogen of the anger of Posthumus, and Imogen flees Cymbeline's court disguised as a page. He also gives the potion, which he believes is a "sovereign restorative," to Imogen. While this is happening, Cymbeline angers Lucius, a Roman ambassador to the point that Rome declares war on Britain over an unpaid tribute to Caesar.

In the novel, some Italian merchants happen to meet in Paris at supper, and fall to discussing their wives. Three maintain an opinion adverse to the ladies' loyalty, from which one Bernabo Lomellia dissents. A fifth named Ambrogiulo provokes Bernabo to propose a wager, which the former accepts, to be decided by the result of his attempt to corrupt Bernabo's wife, Zinevra. With this object, Ambrogiulo goes to Genoa, where she lives, and bribes a char-woman to convey a chest. Into the lady's bedroom, in which the libertine is to secrete himself. By this stratagem he is able to make a survey of Zinevra's bed-chamber after she has retired to rest, and to note a mole, with a tuft of golden hair, on her left breast; and before returning to the chest he steals her ring and other material tokens. Bernabo, having lost the wager, gives an order that his wife should be put to death; but the servant employed on this mission betrays his master, and Zinevra escaping in boy's clothes becomes page to a Catalonian, and ultimately goes into the service of the Sultan; with much else, which Shakespeare seems to have liberally followed. They note that the King's virtuous daughter, Imogen, has married the equally virtuous Posthumus Leonatus, to the considerable displeasure of the King and Queen; Imogen is the King's daughter by a former wife, and he and his current Queen wanted Imogen to marry the Queen's son by a previous marriage of her own, the cloddish Cloten. We also learn that the King previously was the father to twin boys, Guiderius and Arvigarus, who were stolen from him in their infancy and never heard from again. His new Queen is wicked and duplicitous, acting as though she is happy for Imogen and Posthumus but secretly orchestrating their undoing. In his rage, the King banishes Posthumus.Before parting for Rome, Posthumus and Imogen exchange bands-he gives her a bracelet and she gives him a ring-and promise to be true to one another. As a parting gift, Posthumus has his faithful servant, Pisanio, stay in England to attend on Imogen. The Queen, sensing that Pisanio is a troublesome presence given her ambition, gives Pisanio an elixir filled with what she thinks is poison, telling him that it's medicine. In fact, however, the elixir is not poison; the court doctor, Cornelius, wary of the wicked Queen who asked him to brew her poison, has concocted a potion that creates the appearance of death for a short while but is, in fact, harmless.Having arrived in Italy, Posthumus falls in with some old acquaintances, including the Machiavellian Iachimo and the good-hearted Philario. The conversation turns to women's lack of virtue, and Posthumus declares Imogen exempt from this judgment, saying that she is totally chaste. Iachimo wagers ten thousand pounds against the precious ring Posthumous received from Imogen that he can get Imogen to commit adultery. Posthumous accepts this proposition, and Iachimo departs for England.

There are above 2,000 words in it so distinguished. This work has the reputation of presenting to the reader a long series of difficult passages, which has arisen, in most part, we believe, from the unusual amount of contraction in it, and in connection with this, among other things a constant use of the colon, frequently in odd and unlooked for positions. After repeated perusals, however, the means to condensation grow familiar to us, and the perpetually recurring colon, instead of being, as at first, a stumbling-block, becomes an interpreter. The compression manifest throughout Cymbeline is, doubtless, occasioned by the necessity of bringing it within bounds, and this evidently cost Shakspere great labour, for it is one of his longest plays. As it now stands, it seems as if not a line could be renounced without loss. Yet when Charles Kemble gave his First Reading, by command of the Queen, at Buckingham Palace, in 1844, this Play, selected by Prince Albert, was, from the necessity to comprise the Reading within a given time, reduced to about one third of the Work as it was bequeathed to us; there being then shewn, as it were, the trunk and branches of the tree, but, with the exception of a solitary tuft or cluster here and there, all the leaves and blossoms stripped away. Of the original 2,091 Emphasis-Capitals in Cymbeline, there escaped the Editors and Printers of the Second Folio, 163; of the Third, 129; and of the Fourth, 44; in all, 336: not a great loss at the end of 62 years, and after three passages through the press. On the other hand, there appeared of New Capitals not connected with proper names, or at the beginning of lines or sentences, in the Second Folio, 10; in the Third, 27; and in the Fourth, 210; in all, 247. At the end of this Preface full Lists are given of the Lines in which these losses and. gains occur, a course which will, in future, be followed with each Play of this Edition.
