Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cyclopedia of Hardy Fruits The chief' value of a book like this lies in the accuracy of the descriptions and of the determinations of synonyms. Herein the author has had an advantage over the old pomologists, since his connection with a mod ern experiment station, with a large collection of fruits and a good horticultural library, has given him opportunity to describe first hand and pass impartial judgment on varieties, and to go to original sources for names; whereas, the old writers, lacking these modern facilities, were compelled to copy one from the other. With great reluctance, the author abandons a key to varieties of the several hardy fruits. Years of patient labor have not enabled him to produce a key that will work. A variety of any fruit behaves so differently in the sev eral great pomological regions of the continent that a key cannot be made that will be usable for a fruit in all regions. A satisfactory key to varieties of apples for New York does not fit this fruit in Virginia, Iowa, California, or Oregon. About the only constant characters of the apple for all regions of the continent are sweetness and sourness. The color of the flesh is the only constant character of the peach. There are few or no constant char acters in other fruits as they grow in different regions. To arrange varieties alphabetically is unscientific, disorderly, and makes difficult the identification of fruits, but it is the author's belief that they cannot be satisfactorily ar ranged otherwise for a text covering more than one pomological region. Keys to varieties of fruits can be of value only when made for particular regions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Guide to Hardy Fruits and Ornamentals Classic Reprint

Download or read book Guide to Hardy Fruits and Ornamentals Classic Reprint written by T. J. Dwyer and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-08 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guide to Hardy Fruits and Ornamentals The author has been constantly associated in every conceivable way with the hardy fruits and ornamental for over thirty years. He has thought, talked and written about them daily during that period; moreover, he has lived in their midst all this time, has handled and cared for them from the bud and scion to the fruit and flower. For some time past he has longed for an opportunity to tell the story that follows. Simple as it is, it is the result of practical experience. In the beginning of this work the author had in mind two principal motives - one to satisfy and gratify a long cherished wish to sit down and write in plain every-day language, a simple, readily understood story, to endeavor to exclude all foreign and unnecessary matter, to be brief and concise, yet to cover all essential matters relating to cultural methods. Still, personal reminiscences have occasionally crept in; they have been irresistible. Hard as I have fought and opposed them, they have at times dominated me, for the time being - luring me away from a well decided plan and purpose. If an apology is needed it is for this infringement on the readers rights. The other motive was to be able to answer more intelligently and practicably the many letters I receive from friends and correspondents on horticultural matters. For some time past it has been a hard and laborious task to answer these letters individually. In the following pages I have tried to anticipate and supply, in a general way, what the average letter for information inquires about. For the possible mistakes and omissions the author asks your kindly consideration. My hope and earnest wish is that the reading of this book will directly or indirectly influence all to grow their own fruit and beautify their home grounds. Download or read book Grape Man of Texas written by Sherrie S. McLeRoy and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grape Man of Texas is the first biography of Thomas Volney Munson (1843-1913), the internationally known horticulturist who developed over 300 varieties of new grapes specifically for the American South and Southwest. He is perhaps best known for his work in fighting the phylloxera epidemic of the late nineteenth century, which nearly wiped out the world's vineyards. His solution-grafting vinifera onto certain resistant native rootstocks from Texas-earned him the Chevalier du Merite Agricole in the French Legion of Honor and numerous accolades. Munson belonged to and was honored by a number of viticultural and scientific associations and was considered a leader in the new scientific movement of the time for his cutting-edge work in breeding plant varieties, some of which are still important in modern viticulture and research.
