Book Potential Climate Change Effects on Great Lakes Hydrodynamics and Water Quality

Download or read book Potential Climate Change Effects on Great Lakes Hydrodynamics and Water Quality written by David C. L. Lam and published by ASCE Publications. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides a state-of-the-art review of the climate change effects on lake hydrodynamics and water quality. Most of the engineering cases in this book deal with the ability of existing infrastructure to cope with extreme weather conditions. The case studies are intended to illustrate the advancement in modeling research on lake hydrodynamics, thermal stratification, pollutant transport, and water quality by highlighting the climate change aspects in the application of these techniques. Topics include climate and lake responses, lake thermodynamics, large-scale circulation, wind-waves on large lakes, great lakes ice cover, and water quality.

Book A Wintertime Frontal Climatology of the Great Lakes

Download or read book A Wintertime Frontal Climatology of the Great Lakes written by David A. Cousins and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modeling and observational studies have shown that the Great Lakes have a significant impact on wintertime cyclones as well as wintertime cold fronts that traverse this region. The purpose of the research is to develop a wintertime frontal climatology of the Great Lakes. Frontal passages were investigated for the winters of 1999/2000 through 2004/2005. Twelve-hour surface maps were used as the basis for identifying fronts that crossed through the Great Lakes Region. A more detailed analysis of the interactions of the fronts with the lakes was made for the winters of 1999/2000 and 2003/2004 using 3 and 1 hour surface maps. Frontal interaction with a lake was investigated by looking at characteristics of both the fronts and the lake/land interaction. The characteristics of the fronts that were examined were frontal intensity/gradient, speed, type, orientation to the lake, precipitation, and the wind shift across the front before it crossed the lake. The lake/land characteristics that were looked at were dewpoint depression, ice coverage, lake temperature, lake/land temperature difference and time of day. The results of the analysis for 1999/2000 and 2003/2004 seasons were combined and evaluated using basic statistics to test the statistical significance of the results.

Book High Wave Events on the Great Lakes in Relation to El Ni o Southern Oscillation Influences on Mid latitude Cyclones what Can Storm Patterns Tell Us about Extreme Wave Events in the Future

Download or read book High Wave Events on the Great Lakes in Relation to El Ni o Southern Oscillation Influences on Mid latitude Cyclones what Can Storm Patterns Tell Us about Extreme Wave Events in the Future written by Joel Porterfield and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The shorelines of the Great Lakes are often affected by high wave events in the cold season from October to April. These events, usually connected with strong winds associated with passing mid-latitude cyclones (MLCs), can cause significant shoreline damage. This study examines the frequency of winter high wave events at three cities on the Great Lakes in association with El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phases. The Extreme Wave Analysis table from the US Army Corps of Engineers Wave Information Study (WIS) wave hindcast model is used to identify the most extreme wave events at a WIS wave station close to the central shoreline of each city (Duluth, MN; Chicago, IL; Buffalo, NY). Individual events are then associated with mid-latitude cyclone tracks based on a cyclone’s proximity around the date of the event, and both the wave event and cyclone track are identified according to ENSO level (El Niño, La Niña, Neutral) at the time of the event. High wave events at Duluth and Chicago, when visualized by ENSO-type and by month, showed variability that is related to expected MLC sensitivity to ENSO. High wave events at Buffalo, however, had a much stronger seasonal relationship, with events across all ENSO-type winters occurring almost entirely between October and January. These results suggest that ENSO predictions for a winter might be used to predict the probability of expected high wave events in a winter for certain locations on the Great Lakes. With future climate conditions possibly leading to more El Niño events, the results of this study may be used to spark wider conversation and research as to the effects this may have on high wave events around the Great Lakes. Coastal managers should consider taking predictions of expected El Niño conditions into account when preparing for winter."--

Book White Hurricane

Download or read book White Hurricane written by David Geren Brown and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Autumn gales have pursued mariners across the Great Lakes for centuries. On Friday, November 7, 1913, those gales captured their prey. After four days of winds up to 90 miles an hour, freezing temperatures, whiteout blizzard conditions, and mountainous seas, 19 ships had been lost, two dozen had been thrown ashore, 238 sailors were dead, and the city of Cleveland was confronting the worst natural disaster in its history. Writer and mariner David G. Brown combines narrative intensity with factual depth to re-create the events of the "perfect storm" that struck America's heartland."--Publisher's description

Book Climate Change in the Great Lakes Region

Download or read book Climate Change in the Great Lakes Region written by Thomas Dietz and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People living in the Great Lakes region are already feeling the effects of a changing climate. Shifts in seasonal temperatures and precipitation patterns could have dramatic impacts on the economy, ecology, and quality of life. In this illuminating and thorough volume, leading scholars address the challenge of preparing for climate change in the region, where decision makers from various sectors—government, agriculture, recreation, and tourism—must increasingly be aware of the need to incorporate climate change into their short- and long-term planning. The chapters in this revealing book, written by some of the foremost climate change scholars in North America, outline the major trends in the climate of the Great Lakes region, how humans might cope with the uncertainty of climate change impacts, and examples of on-the-ground projects that have addressed these issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daily maximum and minimum air temperatures at 25 locations on the perimeter of the Great Lakes for the period 1897 to 1977 were used to generate long term daily air temperatures and freezing and thawing degree-days (FDD's and TDD's). In addition daily, weekly, and monthly FDD's and daily TDD's were calculated for the 81 summer and 80 winter seasons between 1897 and 1877. this report describes the computational procedure and presents graphs and tables resulting from this analysis. The complete analysis is too voluminous to present in hard copy, but is available on microfilm through World Data Center A, Institure of Arcic and Alpine research, University of Colorado at Boulder, Boulder Colorado 80309.
