Download or read book Indian Ocean Biogeochemical Processes and Ecological Variability written by Jerry D. Wiggert and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 2009-01-12 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian Ocean Biogeochemical Processes and Ecological Variability provides a unique synthesis of current knowledge on Indian Ocean biogeochemistry and ecology, and an introduction of new concepts and topical paradigm challenges. It also reports on the development of more extensive/frequent observational capacity being deployed in the Indian Ocean. This book The volume is derived from invited plenary talks that were presented at the initial SIBER workshop held at the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) in Goa, India in October 2006. It includes contributions from some of the most esteemed oceanographers and Indian Ocean experts in the world. This volume will be valuable to academic and governmental researchers interested in oceanographic, atmospheric and hydrological questions and the interfaces between these processes that are prevalent within the Earth system and which are especially relevant to understanding the complex interactions in the Indian Ocean. The volume discusses: y The overlying physical processes set by monsoonal forcing and how these control biological production and variability y Nutrient cycling and limitation y Pelagic carbon cycling and air-sea exchange y Benthic biogeochemistry and ecology y The impact of climate and human activities on biogeochemistry and ecosystems.

Download or read book The Biology of the Indian Ocean written by B. Zeitzschel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of a Symposium held at the University of Kiel, Germany, from 31 March to 6 April, 1971. The Symposium was organized by the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) and the Marine Productivity section of the International Biological Programme (IBPIPM) with the assistance of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the International Association of Biological Oceanography (IABO). The aim of the Symposium was to summarize present knowledge of the biology of the Indian Ocean. Twenty-two presentations by invited speakers reviewed the research work carried out during the International Indian Ocean Expedition (lIOE) 1959 -1965, the first cooperative project coordinated by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC). In addition, reports were presented of postexpedition examination of material and of more recent investigations relevant to the aims of the lIOE. In keeping with the aims of "Ecological Studies", the present volume contains much new information and some synthesis, all directed towards obtaining an understanding of the functioning and organization of the ecosystem of the Indian Ocean. The plan of the Symposium was to present the relevant meteorological, physical, chemical and geological background and to follow this with the various aspects of biological oceanography. Because of the uneven stage of development of the different disciplines, the papers included in this volume vary in their analytical level.

Download or read book Interactions of C N P and S Biogeochemical Cycles and Global Change written by Roland Wollast and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a natural extension of the SCOPE (Scientific Committee of Problems on the Environment) volumes on the carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S) biogeochemical cycles and their interactions (Likens, 1981; Bolin and Cook, 1983). Substantial progress in the knowledge of these cycles has been made since publication of those volumes. In particular, the nature and extent of biological and inorganic interactions between these cycles have been identified, positive and negative feedbacks recognized and the relationship between the cycles and global environmental change preliminarily elucidated. In March 1991, a NATO Advanced Research Workshop was held for one week in Melreux, Belgium to reexamine the biogeochemical cycles of C, N, P and S on a variety of time and space scales from a holistic point of view. This book is the result of that workshop. The biogeochemical cycles of C, N, P and S are intimately tied to each other through biological productivity and subsequently to problems of global environmental change. These problems may be the most challenging facing humanity in the 21 st century. In the broadest sense, "global change" encompasses both changes to the status of the large, globally connected atmospheric, oceanic and terrestrial environments (e. g. tropospheric temperature increase) and change occurring as the result of nearly simultaneous local changes in many regions of the world (e. g. eutrophication).

Download or read book Phosphates written by Matthew J. Kohn and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 764 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 48 of Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry represents the work of many authors whose research illustrates how the unique chemical and physical behavior of phosphate minerals permits a wide range of applications that encompasses phosphate mineralogy, petrology, biomineralization, geochronology, and materials science. While diverse, these fields are all linked structurally, crystal-chemically and geochemically. As geoscientists turn their attention to the intersection of the biological, geological, and material science realms, there is no group of compounds more germane than the phosphates.
