Book Cyclical Variability in Stellar Winds

Download or read book Cyclical Variability in Stellar Winds written by Lex Kaper and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-05 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that stellar winds are variable, and the fluctuations are often cyclical in nature. This property seems to be shared by the winds of cool and hot stars, even though their outflows are driven by fundamentally different physical mechanisms. Since very similar models have been proposed to explain the cyclical wind variations observed in a wide variety of stars, the time was ripe for astrophysicists from many different sub-disciplines to present the state of the art in a concise form. The proceedings will provide a useful, up-to-date overview of the observations, interpretation, and modelling of the time-dependent mass outflows from all sorts of stars.

Book excerpt: This report summarizes the progress of the work conducted under the program "The Winds of B Supergiants," conducted by Raytheon STX Corporation. The report consists of a journal article "Wind variability in B supergiants III. Corotating spiral structures in the stellar wind of HD 64760." The first step in the project was the analysis of the 1996 time series of 2 B supergiants and an O star. These data were analyzed and reported on at the ESO workshop, "Cyclical Variability in Stellar Winds." Fullerton, A. W. and Massa, D. L. and Prinja, R. K. and Owocki, S. P. and Cranmer, S. R. Book Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars

    Book Details:
  • Author : Harm J. Habing
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-04-17
  • ISBN : 1475738765
  • Pages : 566 pages

Download or read book Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars written by Harm J. Habing and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The underlying astrophysical mechanisms of the objects known as asymptotic giant branch stars - the structures that occur during the dramatic period prior to a star's death - is the main theme of this text. Over the past three decades, asymptotic giant branch stars have become a topic of their own, and the contributions to this volume all focus on these entities themselves, rather than their connections to other fields of astronomy. Among the many topics covered are new methods of high- quality infrared observation and the more detailed and realistic simulations made possible by increasingly fast computers. This collection should be useful to graduate students who work in the field, teachers who want to address the subject in their courses, and to astronomers from various backgrounds who are interested in the astrophysics of AGB stars.

Book Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars

Download or read book Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars written by International Astronomical Union. Symposium and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nonprofit Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP) publishes the Conference Series Proceedings as part of its century-old mission to provide resources for astronomers and advance the science of astronomy. Since 1988, the ASP has published the proceedings of astronomical workshops, meetings, colloquia, and symposia to meet the community's demand for affordable, high-quality volumes on current topics in the rapidly expanding fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Since 1998, the Society has also served as publisher for the International Astronomical Union (IAU), adding their Symposia, Highlights, and Transactions to our growing list of publications. For most rapid delivery of each volume, we encourage libraries and astronomy departments to place a Standing Order for the ASP Conference Series and/or the IAU Publications. Standing Orders are shipped directly from the printer and customers receive volumes at the same discounted rates as ASP members (approximately 25-35 ASP volumes each year and/or 5 IAU Symposia). Please refer to the order form to take advantage of this time-saving offer. We encourage all professionals who are sponsoring conferences, workshops, or colloquia to inquire about publishing these proceedings with the ASP. We provide quality volumes at less than half the price of comparable titles from other major publishers, ensuring that the publication will be available to a wider audience of budget-conscious scientists.Held in Montpellier, France, 27 August - 1 September 1998.

Book Modelling the Upper Atmosphere of Gas Giant Exoplanets Irradiated by Low Mass Stars

Download or read book Modelling the Upper Atmosphere of Gas Giant Exoplanets Irradiated by Low Mass Stars written by Joshua Chadney and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-24 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This PhD thesis details the development of a new 1D ionospheric model to describe the upper atmospheres of extrasolar giant plants. The upper atmospheres of Hot Jupiters are subject to extreme radiation conditions that can result in rapid atmospheric escape. The composition and structure of these planets’ upper atmospheres are affected by high-energy emissions from the host star. The nature of these emissions depends on the stellar type and age, making them important factors in understanding the behaviour of exoplanetary atmospheres.

Book Fundamental Questions in Astrophysics Guidelines for Future UV Observatories

Download or read book Fundamental Questions in Astrophysics Guidelines for Future UV Observatories written by Ana I. Gómez de Castro and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-01-30 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern astrophysics has evolved early phases of discovery and classification to a physics-oriented quest for answers to fundamental problems from cosmology to the origin and diversity of life-sustainable systems in the Universe. Future progress in modern astrophysics requires access to the electromagnetic spectrum in the broadest energy range. This book describes the fundamental problems in modern astrophysics that cannot progress without easy and wide-spread access to modern UV instrumentation.
