Ferritic stainless steel containing more than 7 wt. % of Al represents an interesting material for the production of substrates in catalytic converters because of its good corrosion resistance at high temperature. Despite that, the considerable brittleness of the alloy makes production by means of traditional metallurgical processes difficult. Enriching the steel surface with aluminum avoids these problems and due to the high superficial aluminum concentration, enhances the Al2O3 scale formation in the early stages of the oxidation process. Among several techniques, the co-rolling process appears to be a promising technology for enriching ferritic stainless steel surfaces with aluminum without affecting the structural and mechanical properties of the substrate. This process involves cold rolling the annealed AISI 430 ferritic stainless steel together with aluminum foil to form an Al-steel-Al sandwich. After a preoxidation treatment the resultant assemblies were subjected to cyclic oxidation in air. Their oxidation behavior was then characterized by the weight gain versus the number of cycle curves. Oxides were examined by SEM and the phases were identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Book excerpt: The effects of substituting less strategic elements than Cr on the oxidation and corrosion resistance of AISI 304 stainless steel were investigated. Cyclic oxidation resistance was evaluated at 870 C. Corrosion resistance was determined by exposure of specimens to a boiling copper-rich solution of copper sulfate and sulfuric acid. Alloy substitutes for Cr included Al, Mn, Mo, Si, Ti, V, Y, and misch metal. A level of about 12% Cr was the minimum amount of Cr required for adequate oxidation and corrosion resistance in the modified composition 304 stainless steels. This represents a Cr saving of at least 33%. Two alloys containing 12% Cr and 2% Al plus 2% Mo and 12% Cr plus 2.65% Si were identified as most promising for more detailed evaluation. Stephens, J. Book excerpt: Very long-term cyclic oxidation behavior of Re-108 and ln-939 with and without a protective coating was evaluated at 980 and 870 C, respectively. Re-108 and ln-939 without a protective coating began to show rapid weight loss at 3000 h due to scale spallation, indicating the need for an oxidation protective coating for longer than thousands of hours of oxidative life. NiAl-base coatings of a vapor phase aluminide (VPA), a pack aluminide (CODEP), and a slurry paint aluminide (SERMALOY J) were applied on Re-108 and ln-939. VPA and CODEP on Re-108 and all three coatings on ln-939 showed excellent cyclic oxidation resistance out to 10000 hr. Coated alloys were annealed in an inert atmosphere to determine the loss of Al from the coating into the alloy substrate through diffusion. The Al loss from the coating through diffusion was twice as great as the Al loss through oxidation after 10000 h of cyclic exposure. Oxidation life of VPA-coated Re-108 was estimated by calculating the amount of Al initially available for protective oxidation and the amount of Al lost through oxidation and diffusion. Lee, K. Book excerpt: The oxidation behavior of type 316 stainless steel and candidate advanced alloys for the gas-cooled fast reactor (GCFR) is being investigated at General Atomic Company. The test program consists of oxidation tests in prototypic GCFR environments. Two tests have been completed to date and a third test is under way. The first test was performed in an environment containing a hydrogen/water ratio of 10. The oxidation behavior of all the alloys was good to excellent in this environment. Preferential oxidation of chromium was responsible for this behavior. The second test was performed in an environment containing a hydrogen/water ratio of 0.25, where both chromium and iron oxides are thermodynamically stable. Some of the alloys and some of the ribbed type 316 stainless steel test specimens showed unacceptable oxidation resistance in this environment. In the third test, presently under way, two different pretreatment procedures are being used to control the poor oxidation behavior observed in the second test. Early results show some degree of success.
