This book was released on 2001 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A surface mooring was deployed in the eastern tropical Pacific west of northern Chile from the R/V Melville as part of the Eastern Pacific Investigation of Climate (EPIC). EPIC is a CLIVAR study with the goal of investigating links between sea surface temperature variability in the eastern tropical Pacific and climate over the American continents. Important to that goal is an understanding of the role of clouds in the eastern Pacific in modulating atmosphere-ocean coupling. The mooring was deployed near 20 deg S and 85 deg W, at a location near the western edge of the stratocumulus cloud deck found west of Peru and Chile. This deployment started a three-year occupation of that site by a WHOI surface mooring in order to collect accurate time series of surface forcing and upper ocean variability. The surface mooring was deployed by the Upper Ocean Processes Group of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). In collaboration with investigators from the University of Concepcion, Concepcion, Chile, an XBT section was also made on the way out to the mooring site from Arica, Chile, and an XBT and CTD section was made on the way into Arica. The buoy was equipped with meteorological instrumentation, including two Improved METeorological (IMET) systems. The mooring also carried Vector Measuring Current Meters, single-point temperature recorders, and conductivity and temperature recorders located in the upper meters of the mooring line. In addition to the instrumentation noted above, a variety of other instruments, including an acoustic current meter, an acoustic doppler current profiler, a bio-optical instrument package, and an acoustic rain gauge, were deployed. This report describes, in a general manner, the work that took place and the data collected during the Cook 2 cruise aboard the R/V Melville.

This was Leg 2 of R/V Ron Brown's participation in Eastern Pacific Investigation of Climate (EPIC) 2001, a study of air-sea interaction, the atmosphere, and the upper ocean in the eastern tropical Pacific. The science party included groups from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), NOAA Environmental Technology Laboratory (ETL), the University of Washington (UW), the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), and the University National Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM). The work done by these groups is summarized in this report. In addition, the routine underway data collected while aboard R/V Ron Brown is also summarized here.

Download or read book Floating Ocean Platform written by Ronald N. Kostoff and published by . This book was released on 2003-08-01 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In FY 1990, Congress directed the Secretary of the Navy to commission a study by the National Academy of Sciences for the production of an integrated technology plan for the evolution of aircraft carriers in the first half of the twenty-first century. The House-Senate conferees emphasized "that the product of this study is to be a technology plan for the evolution of sea bases for the most efficient and economical accommodation of tactical air power in the first half of the twenty-first century". Based on this broad charter of evaluating sea bases, an examination of the floating ocean platform concept was included in the study. The floating ocean platform is a generic description of a large, relatively stationary or slowly mobile, platform that can be positioned in most areas of the ocean, and can serve a variety of purposes. The present report was the author's input to the study. It was based on technical analyses, literature reviews and surveys, and discussions/visits with the main groups and organizations involved in developing the floating ocean platform. All discussion material was unclassified, as are the contents of this report. All the external inputs and discussions, too numerous to mention, made this report possible, and are greatly appreciated. The first part of this report is the summary narrative that was submitted by the author to the Technology Group of the study. The second part is the viewgraphs that were presented to the Technology Group by the author on 12 February 1991. The third part is a selected bibliography of studies on the floating ocean platform over the past two decades, with over three thousand references identified.

Download or read book Ocean Energy Recovery written by Richard J. Seymour and published by ASCE Publications. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report establishes the state of the art in a full range of renewable energy technologies that harness the power of oceans. Papers discuss mature technologies, such as tidal energy extraction, and conjectural technologies, such as salinity gradients. In addition, the economics of the major systems are compared in a uniform manner, making it possible to realistically assess their economic potential. This publication provides a single source of balanced technical and economic assessments of competing technologies and should interest those involved in the search for alternative sources of energy.

Book excerpt: The mission of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Water Resources Discipline is to provide the information and understanding needed for wise management of the Nation's water resources. Inherent in this mission is the responsibility of collecting data that accurately describe the physical, chemical, and biological attributes of water systems. These data are used for environmental and resource assessments by the USGS, other government agencies and scientific organizations, and the general public. Reliable and quality-assured data are essential to the credibility and impartiality of the water-resources appraisals carried out by the USGS.
