Download or read book How Cartels Endure and how They Fail written by Peter Z. Grossman and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do some cartels fail and others succeed? This question has intrigued economists for a hundred years, and they have created an extensive body of theory to help explain cartel behaviour. This book looks at the experience of actual cartels and challenges their portrayal as found in the existing literature. The eleven chapters by leading researchers of industrial organization study real examples of industrial collusion. The authors investigate the formation, behaviour, activity and purpose of cartels, and illustrate the intricacies of collusive relationships. In the process they question the existing economic theory surrounding the operation of cartels, which in practice do not always adhere to the textbook models or to complex game theoretic rules. Although much economic research suggests that cartels are doomed to failure, the authors find that there are many examples of industries where cartels have succeeded in controlling prices and output over a prolonged period of time. The book is a groundbreaking attempt to study empirically a range of cartels throughout the world, providing both historical and contemporary examples of collusion to enrich the arguments. This book is written for academics, policymakers, lawyers and economists working in the fields of industrial organization and competition policy.
Download or read book Supply Pressure and the Export Import Performance in the Japan U S Bilateral Trade written by Yusuke Onitsuka and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1994-05-01 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper examines the effects of the supply pressure of the exports in the Japan-U.S. bilateral trade. A simultaneous equation approach with a Almon lag structure is adopted. Two factors of supply pressure, i.e., full-employment capacity and inventory are specified, and positively-sloped export supply functions with these two shift factors are successfully estimated. While capacity is positively correlated with exports, the inventory is often negatively correlated. It is also shown that export supply pressure is much stronger in Japan’s exports than in the U.S. exports, and that supply pressure often affects exports with a lag structure spreading over twelve quarters.

Download or read book International Trade and Finance written by Peter B. Kenen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-07-10 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nine papers in this volume were written for a conference on research in international trade and finance held at Princeton University in March 1973. Each author was asked to survey research on one major topic, with a view to answering three questions: What have we learned from recent empirical research? What are the major gaps in present knowledge? How should we go about filling those gaps? When answering the second question, authors were urged to look at the practical requirements of those who must make policy concerning the international economy, and at the opportunities and insights offered by recent developments in pure theory. When answering the third, they were urged to look at developments in econometric technique, newly available data, and work in progress in related fields.
