Book excerpt: This comprehensive reference guide reviews the literature concerning the impact of the automobile on American social, economic, and political history. This work includes general histories of the automobile, the industry it spawned and labor-management relations, as well as biographies of famous automotive personalities. Focusing on books concerned with various social aspects, chapters discuss such issues as the car's influence on family life, youth, women, the elderly, minorities, literature, and leisure and recreation. Berger has also included works that investigate the government's role in aiding and regulating the automobile, with sections on roads and highways, safety, and pollution. The guide concludes with an overview of reference works and periodicals in the field and a description of selected research collections. The Automobile in American History and Culture provides a resource with which to examine the entire field and its structure. Popular culture scholars and enthusiasts involved in automotive research will appreciate the extensive scope of this reference. Book Racism in the United States

Download or read book Racism in the United States written by Meyer Weinberg and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1990-05-21 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the most comprehensive book-length bibliography on the subject of racism available in the United States. Compiler Meyer Weinberg has surveyed a wide-ranging group of material and classified it under 87 subject headings, drawing on articles, books, congressional hearings and reports, theses and dissertations, research reports, and investigative journalism. Historical references cover the long history of racism, while the heightened awareness and activity of the recent past is also addressed in detail. In addition to works that fit the narrow definition of racism as a mode of oppression or group denial of rights based on color, Weinberg includes references dealing with sexism, antisemitism, economic exploitation, and similar forms of dehumanization. References are grouped under a series of subject headings that include Civil Rights, Desegregation, Housing, Socialism and Racism, Unemployment, and Violence against Minorities. Items which do not have self-explanatory titles are annotated, and virtually every section is thoroughly cross-referenced. Also included is one section of carefully selected references on racism in countries other than the United States. Unlike the remainder of the book, this section is not comprehensive, but rather provides an opportunity to view racism comparatively. The volume concludes with an author index. This work will be a significant addition to both academic and public libraries, as well as an important resource for courses in racism, sociology, and black history.

Book Literature and Race in the Democracy of Goods

Download or read book Literature and Race in the Democracy of Goods written by Christopher Chen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-03-24 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining three literary traditions – post-1960 Asian American, Asian Canadian and Black experimental poetry – this book reframes contemporary scholarly accounts of post-war North American comparative racial group formation, demonstrating how such poetry investigates contemporary Black-Asian relations and maps the complex co-constitution of race and capitalism at different spatial scales. Offering extended close readings of contemporary Black, Asian American and Asian Canadian experimental poets such as Myung Mi Kim, Erica Hunt, Larissa Lai and Ed Roberson, this book argues that these writers redefine race as a changing and politically contested form of constraint and possibility powerfully shaped by economic history and capitalist globalization. This study retheorizes some basic terms of analysis of contemporary US poetry and poetics, critical race and ethnic studies, racial capitalism and contemporary theories of comparative and relational racialization.
