Book Security in Cyberspace

Download or read book Security in Cyberspace written by Giampiero Giacomello and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-07-31 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, the Internet has become a source of information that no country or company can forgo. It is not only used to communicate or entertain, but most importantly to operate utilities and public services such as banking or air traffic. As the reliance on computer networks across societies and economies keeps growing, so do security risks in cyberspace - referred to as "cybersecurity." Cybersecurity means protecting information and control systems from those who seek to compromise them. It also involves actors, both malicious or protective, policies and their societal consequences. This collection of essays provides a better understanding of the risks, perceptions, and myths that surround cybersecurity by looking at it from three different levels of analysis: the sovereign state, the infrastructure and stakeholders of the Internet, and the individual. The essays explore such issues as information ownership, censorship, cyberwars, cyberterrorism, privacy, and rebellion, bringing together expert knowledge from computer science and the social sciences with case studies. It reviews existing policies and practices and discusses the threats and benefits of living in an increasingly networked world. This authoritative analysis of one of the most controversial and compelling security debates of the twenty-first century will appeal to scholars and practitioners interested in security, international relations and policymaking.

Book Cybersecurity Readiness

Download or read book Cybersecurity Readiness written by Dave Chatterjee and published by SAGE Publications, Incorporated. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cybersecurity has traditionally been the purview of information technology professionals, who possess specialized knowledge and speak a language that few outside of their department can understand. In our current corporate landscape, however, cybersecurity awareness must be an organization-wide management competency in order to mitigate major threats to an organization’s well-being—and be prepared to act if the worst happens. With rapidly expanding attacks and evolving methods of attack, organizations are in a perpetual state of breach and have to deal with this existential threat head-on. Cybersecurity preparedness is a critical and distinctive competency, and this book is intended to help students and practitioners develop and enhance this capability, as individuals continue to be both the strongest and weakest links in a cyber defense system. In addition to providing the non-specialist with a jargon-free overview of cybersecurity threats, Dr. Chatterjee focuses most of the book on developing a practical and easy-to-comprehend management framework and success factors that will help leaders assess cybersecurity risks, address organizational weaknesses, and build a collaborative culture that is informed and responsive. Through brief case studies, literature review, and practical tools, he creates a manual for the student and professional alike to put into practice essential skills for any workplace.

Book Cybersecurity for Critical Infrastructure Protection Via Reflection of Industrial Control Systems

Download or read book Cybersecurity for Critical Infrastructure Protection Via Reflection of Industrial Control Systems written by O.B. Popov and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2022-11-23 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although cybersecurity is something of a latecomer on the computer science and engineering scene, there are now inclinations to consider cybersecurity a meta-discipline. Unlike traditional information and communication systems, the priority goal of the cybersecurity of cyber-physical systems is the provision of stable and reliable operation for the critical infrastructures of all fundamental societal functions and activities. This book, Cybersecurity for Critical Infrastructure Protection via Reflection of Industrial Control Systems, presents the 28 papers delivered at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) hosted in Baku, Azerbaijan, and held online from 27-29 October 2021. The inspiration and motivation behind the ARW stem from the growth in large-scale cyber attacks, the rising degree of complexity and sophistication of advanced threats, and the need to protect critical infrastructure by promoting and building a resilient system to promote the well-being of all citizens. The workshop covered a wide range of cybersecurity topics, permeating the main ideas, concepts and paradigms behind ICS and blended with applications and practical exercises, with overtones to IoT, IIoT, ICS, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. Areas discussed during the ARW included the cybersecurity of critical infrastructures; its educational and research aspects; vulnerability analysis; ICS/PLC/SCADA test beds and research; intrusion detection, mitigation and prevention; cryptography; digital forensics for ICS/PLCs; Industry 4.0 robustness and trustworthiness; and Cyber Fortress concept infused with practical training. Investigating theoretical and practical problems involving the security of critical and essential infrastructure of each segment of contemporary societies, the book will be of interest to all those whose work involves cybersecurity.

Book The Role of the State in Migration Control

Download or read book The Role of the State in Migration Control written by Aoife McMahon and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research questions the seemingly ossified premise that states have an absolute discretion to control international migration. Applying Max Weber’s theories of legitimacy, it determines that while states have certain traditionally legitimate functions, migration control, as distinct from the determination of citizenship, is not one such function. Measures of migration control must thus be justified on a rational-legal basis, that is, on a minimal evidential basis. Acknowledging the many obstacles states face in carrying out this legitimising exercise, it is suggested that a supranational approach at the regional level is the most sustainable long-term model, with an ultimate aim of achieving inter-regional cooperation on migration management on the basis of equality between regions.

Book The Good Drone

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kristin Bergtora Sandvik
  • Publisher : Taylor & Francis
  • Release : 2016-08-25
  • ISBN : 1317017536
  • Pages : 213 pages

Download or read book The Good Drone written by Kristin Bergtora Sandvik and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-08-25 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the military use of drones has been the subject of much scrutiny, the use of drones for humanitarian purposes has so far received little attention. As the starting point for this study, it is argued that the prospect of using drones for humanitarian and other life-saving activities has produced an alternative discourse on drones, dedicated to developing and publicizing the endless possibilities that drones have for "doing good". Furthermore, it is suggested that the Good Drone narrative has been appropriated back into the drone warfare discourse, as a strategy to make war "more human". This book explores the role of the Good Drone as an organizing narrative for political projects, technology development and humanitarian action. Its contribution to the debate is to take stock of the multiple logics and rationales according to which drones are "good", with a primary objective to initiate a critical conversation about the political currency of "good". This study recognizes the many possibilities for the use of drones and takes these possibilities seriously by critically examining the difference the drones' functionalities can make, but also what difference the presence of drones themselves – as unmanned and flying objects – make. Discussed and analysed are the implications for the drone industry, user communities, and the areas of crisis where drones are deployed.

Book Cyber Warfare and Terrorism Concepts Methodologies Tools and Applications

This book was released on 2020-03-06 with total page 1697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the rise of big data and the internet of things, terrorist organizations have been freed from geographic and logistical confines and now have more power than ever before to strike the average citizen directly at home. This, coupled with the inherently asymmetrical nature of cyberwarfare, which grants great advantage to the attacker, has created an unprecedented national security risk that both governments and their citizens are woefully ill-prepared to face. Examining cyber warfare and terrorism through a critical and academic perspective can lead to a better understanding of its foundations and implications. Cyber Warfare and Terrorism: Concepts, Methodologies, Tools, and Applications is an essential reference for the latest research on the utilization of online tools by terrorist organizations to communicate with and recruit potential extremists and examines effective countermeasures employed by law enforcement agencies to defend against such threats. Highlighting a range of topics such as cyber threats, digital intelligence, and counterterrorism, this multi-volume book is ideally designed for law enforcement, government officials, lawmakers, security analysts, IT specialists, software developers, intelligence and security practitioners, students, educators, and researchers.

Book Automating Crime Prevention Surveillance and Military Operations

Download or read book Automating Crime Prevention Surveillance and Military Operations written by Aleš Završnik and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-19 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary volume critically explores how the ever-increasing use of automated systems is changing policing, criminal justice systems, and military operations at the national and international level. The book examines the ways in which automated systems are beneficial to society, while addressing the risks they represent for human rights. This book starts with a historical overview of how different types of knowledge have transformed crime control and the security domain, comparing those epistemological shifts with the current shift caused by knowledge produced with high-tech information technology tools such as big data analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. The first part explores the use of automated systems, such as predictive policing and platform policing, in law enforcement. The second part analyzes the use of automated systems, such as algorithms used in sentencing and parole decisions, in courts of law. The third part examines the use and misuse of automated systems for surveillance and social control. The fourth part discusses the use of lethal (semi)autonomous weapons systems in armed conflicts. An essential read for researchers, politicians, and advocates interested in the use and potential misuse of automated systems in crime control, this diverse volume draws expertise from such fields as criminology, law, sociology, philosophy, and anthropology.
