Book excerpt: Longtime residents of the Cuyama Valley of Southern California say, "Either the valley grabs hold of you and pulls you in, or it kicks you out within a year or so." The valley decided about Jane Slama before she decided about it. Ten years after her arrival, she realized that she had succumbed to its rhythms and relished its isolation. As she drove back and forth to the coast for work, however, she began to wonder about this seemingly lost world she lived in. Aside from specific scientific studies, anthropological, archaeological, geological or geo-hydrological, little had been written about it - something she remedies with this narrative. In it, she explores a forgotten rural corner of south - central California, a place that seems to defy the thrust of modern progress in spite of inexorable change. She examines forces that have shaped its history and the unusual array of those who have played key roles in its development. Join the author on an eye-opening and sometimes amusing journey that will give you a new appreciation and understanding of the valley.

Book Forging Communities in Colonial Alta California

Download or read book Forging Communities in Colonial Alta California written by Kathleen L. Hull and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1769 and 1834, an influx of Spanish, Russian, and then American colonists streamed into Alta California seeking new opportunities. Their arrival brought the imposition of foreign beliefs, practices, and constraints on Indigenous peoples. Forging Communities in Colonial Alta California reorients understandings of this dynamic period, which challenged both Native and non-Native people to reimagine communities not only in different places and spaces but also in novel forms and practices. The contributors draw on archaeological and historical archival sources to analyze the generative processes and nature of communities of belonging in the face of rapid demographic change and perceived or enforced difference. Contributors provide important historical background on the effects that colonialism, missions, and lives lived beyond mission walls had on Indigenous settlement, marriage patterns, trade, and interactions. They also show the agency with which Indigenous peoples make their own decisions as they construct and reconstruct their communities. With nine different case studies and an insightful epilogue, this book offers analyses that can be applied broadly across the Americas, deepening our understanding of colonialism and community.
