Book Inland Fishes and Fisheries of NAMIBIA

Download or read book Inland Fishes and Fisheries of NAMIBIA written by Glenn Merron and published by LeRue Press (LRP). This book was released on 2023-10-27 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors of INLAND FISHES AND FISHERIES OF NAMIBIA are scientists with many years of experience in their fields of work and research. Some were my students when I was a Lecturer of Zoology at Stellenbosch University many years ago. Some were members of my staff here in Namibia while I was Director of Fisheries and later Executive Director (Permanent Secretary) of the MFMR. There are no other scientists cum authors better equipped for the task of offering a high quality overview covering the freshwater fishes of Namibia and related issues linked to this subject. This book is a groundbreaking, first of its kind for Namibia, a scientifically orientated record of the topic of freshwater fish in our country. However, at the same time, it has been written in such a way that it also offers a leisurely journey for the layman wishing to increase general knowledge about Namibia's freshwater fishes. Dr. Jan Jurgens, Windhoek June 2023

Book Historical Dictionary of Namibia

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Namibia written by Victor L. Tonchi and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2012-08-31 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 21, 1990, Sam Nujoma was sworn in as the first president of independent Namibia. This ceremony marked the end of a struggle that lasted more than two decades and a period of colonialism that lasted more than a century. Finally, after decades long wars over grazing in the 19th century, genocidal colonial suppression by Germany at the beginning of the 20th century, repressive apartheid racialism throughout the 20th century, and a prolonged armed liberation struggle, Namibians had the chance to choose their own leaders, develop a democratic political process in a free society, and to bring economic development and greater equity to their country. The Historical Dictionary of Namibia covers the history of Namibia through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has several hundred cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Namibia.

Book A Profile and Atlas of the Cuvelai Etosha Basin

Download or read book A Profile and Atlas of the Cuvelai Etosha Basin written by John Mendelsohn and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is the result of research to collect and present all kinds of interesting information, maps and photographs about the Cuvelai Basin. This Basin is perhaps unique and largely unknown to the rest of the world. Imagine not just one river, but a vast network of river channels shared between Angola and Namibia, never reaching the sea, but rather ending in lakes and pans baked by the sun and caked in salt. This is the area of Etosha. Geologists also call the whole area the Owambo Basin, as it is intimately associated with the Ambo or Owambo people. It supports hundreds of thousands of people who live in an often magical, watery landscape crisscrossed by countless iishana channels. About 40% of all Namibians live there. This book focuses mainly on the Namibian part of the basin, hence the title Cuvelai-Etosha Basin."--Gondwana Collection website.

Book Food Security for African Smallholder Farmers

Download or read book Food Security for African Smallholder Farmers written by Hupenyu Allan Mupambwa and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-28 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a synthesis of current agricultural research in Africa with the aim of presenting evidence based information that can be directly applied into improving the African smallholder farmers’ food security. It presents positive scientific research that has been undertaken in Africa, in simpler terms, thus driving the research for development agenda contributing to the attainment of SDG 2. Numerous research that targets resource poor African smallholder farmers has been published, yet the region faces very low productivity levels. This lack of translation from research to food security and increased agricultural incomes is due to the poor uptake of scientific research by farmers, which is partly due to poor presentation of this body of knowledge into simpler forms that extension workers and farmers can directly adopt. Therefore, this book offers research information in an easy, digestible and application oriented style, so as to enable transformation of the African agricultural sector by effectively driving agricultural productivity in Africa. This book is of interest to African extension workers, who will translate the simplified knowledge into lessons that can be useful to smallholder farmers. The book is also beneficial for policy makers as well as academics, researchers and other science based professionals.

Book Fluvial Megafans on Earth and Mars

Download or read book Fluvial Megafans on Earth and Mars written by Justin Wilkinson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-31 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Megafans are partial cones of river sediment that reach unexpectedly large dimensions, with the largest on Earth being 700 km long. Due to recent developments in space-based observations, global mapping efforts have shown that modern megafan features cover vast landscapes on most continents. This book provides a new inventory of nearly 300 megafans across five continents. Chapters focus on regional studies of megafans from all continents barring North America and Antarctica. The major morphological attributes of megafans and multi-megafan landscapes are discussed, and the principal controls on megafan development are examined. The book also compares megafans with alluvial fans, deltas, floodplains and the recently recognised 'major avulsive fluvial system' (MAFS). The final part of the book discusses the application of megafan research to economic geology, aquifers and planetary geology including layered deposits on Mars. This is an invaluable reference for researchers in geomorphology, sedimentology and physical geography.

Book International Watercourses Law and Multilateral Environmental Agreements

Download or read book International Watercourses Law and Multilateral Environmental Agreements written by Yang Liu and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-02-06 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book anchors its arguments in Article 20 of the Watercourses Convention and explores consistencies and inconsistencies in parallel definitions, substantive and procedural obligations and institutional arrangements in IWL, and the Ramsar and Biodiversity Conventions with respect to the protection and preservation of ecosystems of shared inland waters. Dr. Yang Liu argues that the all-around informed and integrated application of IWL and MEAs is essential for the effective protection and preservation of shared inland water ecosystems. However, the degree of cross-fertilization of parallel provisions should be examined on a case-by-case basis in light of the legal analytical framework deployed in this study.

Book Integrated Water Resources Management in Water scarce Regions

Download or read book Integrated Water Resources Management in Water scarce Regions written by Stefan Liehr and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research project CuveWaters developed and implemented adapted technologies and accompanying measures to support the national process towards an Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). The aim is to give people in the Cuvelai-Etosha Basin reliable access to clean water over the long term, thus enhancing their livelihood and health, and to create job opportunities. IWRM relies on solutions that use various sources, types and qualities of water for different purposes. CuveWaters implemented pilot plants for rain- and floodwater harvesting, groundwater desalination, as well as facilities for sanitation and water reuse. Technical components of the project were framed by societal and scientific components. Integrated Water Resources Management in Water-scarce Regions provides a comprehensive view on the complexity and interconnectedness of findings and conclusions regarding the principle strategic approach within the CuveWaters project’s concept. The book aims to present the work of technical, social and natural scientists but also of media professionals: It gives thematically focussed details on the three technology-based solutions which go beyond mere technical considerations and embed this into the overarching process towards IWRM in Namibia. Finally, it critically addresses lessons learnt and limits of projects in the context of research for implementation. This book is of great value to experts, professionals and also students and academics in the areas of water management, technology development and implementation and transdisciplinary science.

Book Combating Water Scarcity in Southern Africa

Download or read book Combating Water Scarcity in Southern Africa written by Msangi Josephine Phillip and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-08-13 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a close examination of water scarcity as a developmental challenge facing member nations of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the interventions that have been implemented to combat the situation and the challenges still outstanding. The first chapter paints the backdrop of the water scarcity problem, reviewing historical approaches from the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro to the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development (2002) to the United Nations Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development (2012), and recapping principles and agreements reached during and after these conferences. Chapter two examines the Southern Africa region’s efforts to combat water scarcity including principles, policies and strategies and the responsibility of each member to implement them. Written by the editor, J.P. Msangi, the chapter describes Namibia’s efforts to ensure management of scarce water. Beyond enacting management and pollution control regulations and raising public awareness, Namibia encourages research to ensure attainment of the requirements of both the SADC Protocol and its own water scarcity management laws. The next three chapters offer Namibia-based case studies on impacts of pollution on water treatment; on the effects of anthropogenic activities on water quality and on the effects of water transfers from dams upstream of Von Bach dam. The final chapter provides detailed summaries of the issues discussed in the book, highlighting conclusions and offering recommendations. Combating Water Scarcity in Southern Africa synthesizes issues pertinent to the SADC countries as well as to other regions, and offers research that up to now has not been conducted in Namibia.
