Book The Madness of Crowds

Download or read book The Madness of Crowds written by Douglas Murray and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER Updated with a new afterword "An excellent take on the lunacy affecting much of the world today. Douglas is one of the bright lights that could lead us out of the darkness." – Joe Rogan "Douglas Murray fights the good fight for freedom of speech ... A truthful look at today's most divisive issues" – Jordan B. Peterson Are we living through the great derangement of our times? In The Madness of Crowds Douglas Murray investigates the dangers of 'woke' culture and the rise of identity politics. In lively, razor-sharp prose he examines the most controversial issues of our moment: sexuality, gender, technology and race, with interludes on the Marxist foundations of 'wokeness', the impact of tech and how, in an increasingly online culture, we must relearn the ability to forgive. One of the few writers who dares to counter the prevailing view and question the dramatic changes in our society – from gender reassignment for children to the impact of transgender rights on women – Murray's penetrating book, now published with a new afterword taking account of the book's reception and responding to the worldwide Black Lives Matter protests, clears a path of sanity through the fog of our modern predicament.

Book Hegel s Theory of Madness

Download or read book Hegel s Theory of Madness written by Daniel Berthold-Bond and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how an understanding of the nature and role of insanity in Hegel's writing provides intriguing new points of access to many of the central themes of his larger philosophic project. Berthold-Bond situates Hegel's theory of madness within the history of psychiatric practice during the great reform period at the turn of the eighteenth century, and shows how Hegel developed a middle path between the stridently opposed camps of "empirical" and "romantic" medicine, and of "somatic" and "psychical" practitioners. A key point of the book is to show that Hegel does not conceive of madness and health as strictly opposing states, but as kindred phenomena sharing many of the same underlying mental structures and strategies, so that the ontologies of insanity and rationality involve a mutually illuminating, mirroring relation. Hegel's theory is tested against the critiques of the institution of psychiatry and the very concept of madness by such influential twentieth-century authors as Michel Foucault and Thomas Szasz, and defended as offering a genuinely reconciling position in the contemporary debate between the "social labeling" and "medical" models of mental illness.

Book excerpt: Leaning heavily on scientific and medical language, this book is not for the faint of heart. In it the author makes a case for giving up milk and meat. He categorizes the use of milk in the diet as "udder nonsense," and quotes book after journal after scientific paper to back up his premise. "What exactly is milk? The white liquid that is often used for breakfast cereals is a smorgasbord of chemicals ranging from water to a plethora of hormones. Every drop of cow's milk contains any number of hormones. Specifically, cow's milk contains: Pituitary hormones-Growth Hormone (GH), Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH), Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Luteinizing Hormone (LH), Adrencorticotropic Hormone (ACTH), PRL, and Oxytocin; Hypothalamic hormones:-Thyrotropin Releasing Hormone (TRH), Luteinizing Hormone-Releasing Hormone (LHRH), Somatostatin, PRL inhibiting factor, PRL releasing factor, GnRH, GRH; Steroid hormones:-Estradiol, Estriol, Progesterone, Testosterone, Ketosteroids, and Corticosterone." Milk is a hormone delivery system suited for the species from which the milk is derived. Human milk for babies and cow's milk for calves. With over 9,000,000 milk cows in the U.S. alone, each generating an average of 80 pounds of poop per day, the vast quantities of feed and water required to produce milk, millions of acres plowed over for large, monoculture crop fields dedicated to feeding livestock, deforestation for agriculture in South America, and the Midwest losing its native prairies and grasslands for farming create an inconvenient truth affecting the planet we can no longer ignore.

Book Crazy

  • Author : Pete Earley
  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 2007-04-03

  • Pages : 388 pages

Download or read book Crazy written by Pete Earley and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2007-04-03 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A magnificent gift to those of us who love someone who has a mental illness…Earley has used his considerable skills to meticulously research why the mental health system is so profoundly broken.”—Bebe Moore Campbell, author of 72 Hour Hold Former Washington Post reporter Pete Earley had written extensively about the criminal justice system. But it was only when his own son—in the throes of a manic episode—broke into a neighbor's house that he learned what happens to mentally ill people who break a law. This is the Earley family's compelling story, a troubling look at bureaucratic apathy and the countless thousands who suffer confinement instead of care, brutal conditions instead of treatment, in the “revolving doors” between hospital and jail. With mass deinstitutionalization, large numbers of state mental patients are homeless or in jail-an experience little better than the horrors of a century ago. Earley takes us directly into that experience—and into that of a father and award-winning journalist trying to fight for a better way.

In their own words they each look back on shared adventures. Playing music together, riding freight trains, spraying graffiti and stealing records. Walking in one another's footsteps by day and rising up through the city's exploding pub music scene by night. Before We Was We is irreverent, funny and full of character. Just like them.

Book excerpt: David Fitzpatrick’s Sharp is an extraordinary memoir—a fascinating, disturbing look into the mind of a man who, in his early 20s, began cutting himself due to a severe mental illness. A beautifully written treatment of a powerful subject, Fitzpatrick—whose symptoms included extreme depression and self-mutilation—writes movingly and honestly about his affliction and inspires readers with his courage, joining the literary ranks of Terri Cheney (Manic), Augusten Burroughs (Running with Scissors), Marya Hornbacher (Wasted), and Susanna Kaysen (Girl, Interrupted). “A harrowing journey from self-destructive psychosis to a cautious re-emergence into the flickering sunshine of the sane world….Fitzpatrick writes about mental illness with the unsparing intensity of Sylvia Plath and Anne Sexton but also with the hard-won self-knowledge of William Styron, Kay Jamison, and other chroniclers of disease, recovery, and management…. A must read, remarkably told.” —Wally Lamb, author of I Know This Much is True
