Book Truth

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christine Helmer
  • Publisher : Peeters Publishers
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 9789042913158
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book Truth written by Christine Helmer and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume relates the controversy concerning competing knowledge claims to truth. In a pluralist context, substantive claims can no longer be made by skirting epistemological issues. Rather, claims concerning content can only be adequately addressed once epistemological issues have been clarified. Truth must furthermore be related to the hermeneutical task of understanding another's position. Finally, truth must be related to the rules governing the path by which competing claims arrive at consensus. This volume contains interdisciplinary dialogues between philosophers of religion, theologians, historians, and biblical scholars. The interdisciplinary dialogues are structured thematically; "Truth and Reality" is the theme structuring contributions by Marvin A. Sweeney (Claremont), Christine Helmer (Claremont), Christof Landmesser (Tubingen), Kristin De Troyer (Claremont), D.Z. Phillips (Claremont), and John S. Kloppenborg (Toronto). "Truth and History" is the focus of contributions by Tammi J. Schneider (Claremont), Lori Anne Ferrell (Claremont), and Anselm Kyongsuk Min (Claremont). The theme of "Truth and Religious Pluralism" is treated in contributions by Lieven Boeve (Louvain), Richard Amesbury (Valdosta) & H. Jong Kim (Claremont), Marjorie Suchocki (Claremont), and David Ray Griffin (Claremont).

Book Enduring Truths

Download or read book Enduring Truths written by Darcy Grimaldo Grigsby and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-09-21 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richly illustrated, Enduring Truths examines the freed slave Sojourner Truth, who achieved fame in the nineteenth century as an orator and abolitionist, and who, though illiterate, earned a living on the anti-slavery lecture circuit in part by selling cartes-de-visite of herself. Cartes-de-visitesimilar in format to post cardsoffered a mode of mass communication back in the day. Even then, they were collectible novelties. Virtually every celebrity used them to purvey their own countenance in order to become part of the popular imagination of a society. Sojourner Truth aspired to nothing less. These photographs of her are famous, and they have been commented upon before, but they have not received the kind of in-depth, nuanced cultural analysis offered in this book."

Book Galileo s Instruments of Credit

Download or read book Galileo s Instruments of Credit written by Mario Biagioli and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-07-15 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation. In six years, Galileo Galilei went from being a mathematics professor to a star in the court of Florence to a target of the Inquisition. And during that time, Galileo made a series of astronomical discoveries that reshaped the ideas of the physical nature of the heavens and transformed him from a university mathematician into a court philosopher. Galileo's Instruments of Creditproposes radical new interpretations of key episodes of Galileo's career, including his telescopic discoveries of 1610, the dispute over sunspots, and the conflict with the Holy Office over the relationship between Copernicanism and Scripture. Galileo's tactics shifted as rapidly as his circumstances, argues Mario Biagioli, and these changes forced him to respond swiftly to the opportunities and risks posed by unforeseen inventions, other discoveries, and his opponents. Focusing on the aspects of Galileo's scientific life that extended beyond court culture and patronage, Biagioli offers a revisionist account of the different systems of exchanges, communication, and credibility at work in Galileo's career. Galileo's Instruments of Creditwill fascinate readers interested in the history of astronomy and the history of science in general.

Book Access 2007 The Missing Manual

Download or read book Access 2007 The Missing Manual written by Matthew MacDonald and published by O'Reilly Media. This book was released on 2006-12-29 with total page 753 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compared to industrial-strength database products such as Microsoft's SQL Server, Access is a breeze to use. It runs on PCs rather than servers and is ideal for small- to mid-sized businesses and households. But Access is still intimidating to learn. It doesn't help that each new version crammed in yet another set of features; so many, in fact, that even the pros don't know where to find them all. Access 2007 breaks this pattern with some of the most dramatic changes users have seen since Office 95. Most obvious is the thoroughly redesigned user interface, with its tabbed toolbar (or "Ribbon") that makes features easy to locate and use. The features list also includes several long-awaited changes. One thing that hasn't improved is Microsoft's documentation. To learn the ins and outs of all the features in Access 2007, Microsoft merely offers online help. Access 2007: The Missing Manual was written from the ground up for this redesigned application. You will learn how to design complete databases, maintain them, search for valuable nuggets of information, and build attractive forms for quick-and-easy data entry. You'll even delve into the black art of Access programming (including macros and Visual Basic), and pick up valuable tricks and techniques to automate common tasks -- even if you've never touched a line of code before. You will also learn all about the new prebuilt databases you can customize to fit your needs, and how the new complex data feature will simplify your life. With plenty of downloadable examples, this objective and witty book will turn an Access neophyte into a true master.

So many, in fact, that even veterans don't know where to find them all. Microsoft solved this problem in PowerPoint 2007 by redesigning the user interface with a tabbed toolbar that makes features easy to locate and use. PowerPoint 2007 also boasts improved graphics, additional templates, the ability to save custom layouts, and improved collaboration through SharePoint. One thing Microsoft hasn't improved is its poor documentation. To learn the ins and outs of all the features in PowerPoint 2007, Microsoft merely offers online help. If you're familiar with previous versions of the program, you may be lost the first time you fire up the new PowerPoint; or you would be if it weren't for PowerPoint 2007: The Missing Manual. This book, written specifically for this version of the software, not only offers the basics of how to create, save, set up, run, and print a basic bullets-and-background slideshow, but takes you into the world of multimedia, animation, and interactivity. You'll learn how to add pictures, sound, video, animated effects, and controls (buttons and links) to their slides, along with ways to pull text, spreadsheets, and animations created in other programs. You can also create your own reusable design templates and learn to automate repetitive tasks with macros. Learn how to take advantage of advanced functions (such as adding custom background images) that existed in previous PowerPoint versions, but were so cleverly hidden that few people ever found them.

Book Moments of Silence

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thongchai Winichakul
  • Publisher : University of Hawaii Press
  • Release : 2020-03-31
  • ISBN : 0824882334
  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book Moments of Silence written by Thongchai Winichakul and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The massacre on October 6, 1976, in Bangkok was brutal and violent, its savagery unprecedented in modern Thai history. Four decades later there has been no investigation into the atrocity; information remains limited, the truth unknown. There has been no collective coming to terms with what happened or who is responsible. Thai society still refuses to confront this dark page in its history. Moments of Silence focuses on the silence that surrounds the October 6 massacre. Silence, the book argues, is not forgetting. Rather it signals an inability to forget or remember—or to articulate a socially meaningful memory. It is the “unforgetting,” the liminal domain between remembering and forgetting. Historian Thongchai Winichakul, a participant in the events of that day, gives the silence both a voice and a history by highlighting the factors that contributed to the unforgetting amidst changing memories of the massacre over the decades that followed. They include shifting political conditions and context, the influence of Buddhism, the royal-nationalist narrative of history, the role played by the monarchy as moral authority and arbiter of justice, and a widespread perception that the truth might have devastating ramifications for Thai society. The unforgetting impacted both victims and perpetrators in different ways. It produced a collective false memory of an incident that never took place, but it also produced silence that is filled with hope and counter-history. Moments of Silence tells the story of a tragedy in Thailand—its victims and survivors—and how Thai people coped when closure was unavailable in the wake of atrocity. But it also illuminates the unforgetting as a phenomenon common to other times and places where authoritarian governments flourish, where atrocities go unexamined, and where censorship (imposed or self-directed) limits public discourse. The tensions inherent in the author’s dual role offer a riveting story, as well as a rare and intriguing perspective. Most of all, this provocative book makes clear the need to provide a place for past wrongs in the public memory.

Download or read book I Steal Pencils written by Keith Franklin and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-07 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I don’t know if Keith Franklin is a great poet or no. But I know that he is a born poet. Anyway, he wrote at least one poem that deserves to be included into any anthology of contemporary American poetry. In this poem Keith Franklin confesses that since childhood he liked to steal pencils. It means that subconsciously he was trying to create his own rainbow. What is this rainbow? It is a symbol of the diversity of life. It is a symbol of the human right to possess all the colors given to us by eternity. Inside our mothers, not yet born, all of us are lying down like new unsharpened pencils in their tender, warm, breathing pencil-boxes. Some of us unfortunately are doomed to use only our own self-eraser, fixed at one tip of the pencil’s body with a little metal ring. Only the strong artists are able to sharpen the opposite tip of pencils and create with a colorful graphite, liberated from the wooden pencil’s body, their own rainbow, not stolen from others. Keith Franklin belongs to this stubborn breed of artist. — Yevgeny Yevtushenko

Book Cut Copy Paste

  • Author : Whitney Trettien
  • Publisher : U of Minnesota Press
  • Release : 2022-02-15
  • ISBN : 1452966311
  • Pages : 310 pages

Download or read book Cut Copy Paste written by Whitney Trettien and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do early modern media underlie today’s digital creativity? In Cut/Copy/Paste, Whitney Trettien journeys to the fringes of the London print trade to uncover makerspaces and collaboratories where paper media were cut up and reassembled into radical, bespoke publications. Bringing these long-forgotten objects back to life through hand-curated digital resources, Trettien shows how early experimental book hacks speak to the contemporary conditions of digital scholarship and publishing. As a mixed-media artifact itself, Cut/Copy/Paste enacts for readers what Trettien argues: that digital forms have the potential to decenter patriarchal histories of print. From the religious household of Little Gidding—whose biblical concordances and manuscripts exemplify protofeminist media innovation—to the queer poetic assemblages of Edward Benlowes and the fragment albums of former shoemaker John Bagford, Cut/Copy/Paste demonstrates history’s relevance to our understanding of current media. Tracing the lives and afterlives of amateur “bookwork,” Trettien creates a method for identifying and comprehending hybrid objects that resist familiar bibliographic and literary categories. In the process, she bears witness to the deep history of radical publishing with fragments and found materials. With many of Cut/Copy/Paste’s digital resources left thrillingly open for additions and revisions, this book reimagines our ideas of publication while fostering a spirit of generosity and inclusivity. An open invitation to cut, copy, and paste different histories, it is an inspiration for students of publishing or the digital humanities, as well as anyone interested in the past, present, and future of creativity.
