Book Korean Business Etiquette

Download or read book Korean Business Etiquette written by Boye Lafayette De Mente and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2011-06-14 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Korean companies and technology have suddenly conquered the world. Samsung, Hyundai and LG are industry leaders and the global brands. Korean culture in the form of K-Pop music videos and "Korean Wave" films and TV dramas are watched everywhere from Tel Aviv to Singapore to Rio. Korean gourmet food trucks ply the streets of New York and LA, and kimchi has found a place on the shelves of well-stocked supermarkets around the world. With just a fraction of Japan's land area, less than half its population, and no natural resources--how have Korean companies managed to conquer the world in such a short period of time? What is the "secret sauce" of Korean business practices and companies that makes them so successful? To find out, readers need more than statistics and company profiles. Learning the basics about Korean culture, about Korean social etiquette and Korean business culture, will enable you to understand for the first time how Koreans think and why they work so effectively to achieve their goals. This understanding will enhance your own effectiveness in doing business with Koreans, or in competing with them--whether in Korea or elsewhere.

Book Invented Traditions in North and South Korea

Download or read book Invented Traditions in North and South Korea written by Andrew David Jackson and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost forty years after the publication of Hobsbawm and Ranger’s The Invention of Tradition, the subject of invented traditions—cultural and historical practices that claim a continuity with a distant past but which are in fact of relatively recent origin—is still relevant, important, and highly contentious. Invented Traditions in North and South Korea examines the ways in which compressed modernity, Cold War conflict, and ideological opposition has impacted the revival of traditional forms in both Koreas. The volume is divided thematically into sections covering: (1) history, religions, (2) language, (3) music, food, crafts, and finally, (4) space. It includes chapters on pseudo-histories, new religions, linguistic politeness, literary Chinese, p’ansori, heritage, North Korean food, architecture, and the invention of children’s pilgrimages in the DPRK. As the first comparative study of invented traditions in North and South Korea, the book takes the reader on a journey through Korea’s epic twentieth century, examining the revival of culture in the context of colonialism, decolonization, national division, dictatorship, and modernization. The book investigates what it describes as “monumental” invented traditions formulated to maintain order, loyalty, and national identity during periods of political upheaval as well as cultural revivals less explicitly connected to political power. Invented Traditions in North and South Korea demonstrates that invented traditions can teach us a great deal about the twentieth-century political and cultural trajectories of the two Koreas. With contributions from historians, sociologists, folklorists, scholars of performance, and anthropologists, this volume will prove invaluable to Koreanists, as well as teachers and students of Korean and Asian studies undergraduate courses.

Book Korea s Pastimes and Customs

Download or read book Korea s Pastimes and Customs written by I-hwa Yi and published by Homa & Sekey Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book explores the favorite pastimes and customs of the Korean people under the 'Great Empire' from the late 14th century to 1910, when Korea was occupied by Japan. Some of the popular games discussed include Baduk (the Korean version of 'Go', a strategic board game for two players), Janggi (the Korean version of chess) and Yutnori (a game played with four short sticks). The author also discusses games played by young boys (e.g. flying kites) and young girls (e.g. hide-and-seek), men (e.g. archery) and women (e.g. seesaw), and pastimes enjoyed by both sexes (e.g. tug of war). Lee examines the origin of family names and common people's obsession with genealogy during the Joseon dynasty. He also discusses the important ceremonies celebrating milestones in one's life as well as ceremonies associated with various holidays on the calendar. The last segment of the book is devoted to people's interest in fortune-telling. The author discusses behaviors that were considered taboo and the various ways people tried to predict their future.

Book Seasonal Customs of Korea

Download or read book Seasonal Customs of Korea written by David E. Shaffer and published by 한림출판사. This book was released on 2007 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fast-paced, rapidly changing world, Korea has not been unaffected. Many long-observed seasonal customs that were still practiced a few short decades ago have now disappeared or are quickly disappearing. (Children prefer computer games to kite-flying and top-spinning on Lunar New Year's Day.) Although a custom may no longer be explicitly followed, knowledge of it has more importance than merely satisfying one's inquisitiveness; the essence of the past manifests itself in the present. Korea's long-observed seasonal customs of the past do still, however, have considerable influence upon the formation of the behavioral and attitudinal patterns of present-day society. In this way, customs of yesteryear live on to influence the present, and ultimately, the future. Most seasonal customs have been formed and developed as a result of the cycles of agriculture, and thus, comprehensively reflect the people's everyday life. As seasonal customs have been formed around unified experiences of people's lives, Korea's traditional culture has been transmitted through deeply embedded teachings, within which the sentiments of the people have also been preserved.

Book Korea Culture Smart

Download or read book Korea Culture Smart written by James Hoare and published by Bravo Limited. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apart from the headline-making politics, not much is known in the West about the Korean people and their ancient culture. Yet those who visit Korea, whether North or South, find a land of great interest. The Koreans, when not constrained by politics or other considerations, are friendly and sociable, and the peninsula has areas of outstanding natural beauty. The South's cities, if not always beautiful, are vibrant and alive. The North, while very different, is complex and fascinating. The standoff between the two countries of the Korean Peninsula is a legacy of the Cold War and a potential flashpoint for future conflict. Despite a brief thaw in relations a few years ago, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in the north, a secretive single-party socialist state with a centralized industrial economy, conducted nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009. The Republic of Korea (ROK) in the south meanwhile, a free market democracy, has become a rising economic power, and in 2010 became the first former aid recipient to join the OECD Development Assistance Committee. Much has changed since the first edition of Culture Smart! Korea was published in 2005: the North's defiant development of its nuclear program, the end of the South's "Sunshine" or engagement policy in 2008, the opening up to US tourists by the North in 2010, and the death of its leader Kim Jong Il in 2011 and the succession of his youngest son, Kim Jong Un. This new, updated edition of Culture Smart! Korea looks at the changing social and economic situation and provides real insights into thinking and behavior in both countries. It indicates the pitfalls to avoid, and introduces you to some of the many delights of the Korean peninsula.
