Book Memory and Forgetting in English Renaissance Drama

Download or read book Memory and Forgetting in English Renaissance Drama written by Garrett A. Sullivan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-09-29 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engaging debates over the nature of subjectivity in early modern England, this fascinating and original study examines sixteenth- and seventeenth-century conceptions of memory and forgetting, and their importance to the drama and culture of the time. Garrett A. Sullivan, Jr discusses memory and forgetting as categories in terms of which a variety of behaviours - from seeking salvation to pursuing vengeance to succumbing to desire - are conceptualized. Drawing upon a range of literary and non-literary discourses, represented by treatises on the passions, sermons, anti-theatrical tracts, epic poems and more, Shakespeare, Marlowe and Webster stage 'self-recollection' and, more commonly, 'self-forgetting', the latter providing a powerful model for dramatic subjectivity. Focusing on works such as Macbeth, Hamlet, Dr Faustus and The Duchess of Malfi, Sullivan reveals memory and forgetting to be dynamic cultural forces central to early modern understandings of embodiment, selfhood and social practice.

Book Elements of Criticism

Download or read book Elements of Criticism written by Henry Home, Lord Kames and published by Graphic Arts Books. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elements of Criticism (1762) is a philosophical work by Henry Home, Lord Kames. Published at the height of his career as a leading legal and cultural figure of the Scottish Enlightenment, Elements of Criticism has been credited as a crucial academic work in the development of modern English literary studies. “The science of criticism tends to improve the heart not less than the understanding...A just taste in the fine arts, by sweetening and harmonizing the temper, is a strong antidote to the turbulence of passion and violence of pursuit. Elegance of taste procures to a man so much enjoyment at home, or easily within reach, that in order to be occupied, he is, in youth, under no temptation to precipitate into hunting, gaming, drinking; nor, in middle age, to deliver himself over to ambition; nor, in old age, to avarice.” Although he is largely unheard of today, Henry Home was an integral figure in the elevation of the art of literary criticism as a subject in universities around Britain and the world. His central thesis is that criticism itself stems from the senses and directly relates to humanity’s capacity for reason. Through art, Home believed, humanity could live both morally and in harmony with the natural world, thereby creating a civilization rooted in virtue and creativity. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Henry Home, Lord Kames’ Elements of Criticism is a classic of English literature reimagined for modern readers.

Book Jacobean Drama

Download or read book Jacobean Drama written by David Farley-Hills and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-06 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonson, Marston, Chapman, Middleton, Heywood, Webster and Fletcher are playwrights of the Jacobean stage whose outstanding literary achievements have to some extent been obscured or misunderstood in Shakespeare's shadow. This timely reassessment, based on the accumulated scholarship of the decades since Una Ellis-Fermor's Jacobean Drama in 1936, comes when the opening of the Swan Theatre at Stratford-upon-Avon gives the public, at last, the chance to see on the professional stage some of the neglected masterpieces of the richest period of our theatre.
