Book Leadership through the Ages

Download or read book Leadership through the Ages written by Ronald D. Sylvia and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2009-12-30 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human knowledge about organizing and leading complex collectives reaches back thousands of years. When Jethro advised his son-in-law, Moses, to resist micromanaging, to lead by example, and to delegate authority to persons of integrity, he articulated some of the earliest recorded organizational recommendations. This engaging book taps into the wisdom of the ages to illuminate modern approaches to leadership. Leadership through the Ages examines intrinsic leadership; that is, how to build leadership skills and how to apply them. It is based on the premise that leaders are not born knowing how to lead. Rather, skill sets can be learned and sharpened, while styles of communication and interaction can be cultivated. Sylvias presentation is liberally sprinkled with sage advice and examples from the best of Eastern and Western traditions, from Confucius and Sun Tzu to Cardinal Richelieu, Napolon, and Lincoln. To these are added modern theories of leadership illustrated with compelling cases from the real world.

Book Computer Literacy in Human Services Education

Download or read book Computer Literacy in Human Services Education written by Richard Reinoehl and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a unique and notable contribution to the investigation and exemplification of computer literacy in human services education. A significant contribution to the development of the contemporary human services curriculum, this helpful guide introduces the computer literate curriculum, explores the nature of computer literacy and its ramifications for teaching in the human services, and discusses the computer's effect on scholarly thinking. Computer Literacy in Human Services Education is divided into two major sections, the first dealing with teaching about computers and the second addressing the use of computers in teaching. In the first section, the authors introduce the topic of computer literacy in human services education and look at some general issues which have broad implications for the educator. They also explore program-wide curriculum development and the development of individual courses. In the second section, the authors discuss computers as devices which can facilitate both learning and thinking in human services, and suggest that some theories explaining human behavior may also apply to human/computer interaction. Other topics covered in the section are the use of computers in teaching about human services, including Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI), simulations, and interactive video. The volume concludes with an examination of the ways computers can affect the thinking of scholars in teaching and in model and theory building in the human services.

Bringing together psychological, sociological, pedagogical approaches, the book also explores theoretical underpinnings of 21st century skills and offers a scalable solution to align multiple competency and literacy frameworks. The book provides a conceptual framework for curriculum reform and transformation of school practice designed to ensure that every school graduate thrives in our technologically and culturally changing world. By providing eight empirical portraits of competence-driven curriculum reform, this book is great resource to educational researchers and policy makers.

Book Gender Change in Academia

Download or read book Gender Change in Academia written by Birgit Riegraf and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-15 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Editors’ Foreword The fundamental changes currently taking place in the national and international science landscapes can no longer be overlooked. Within those changes, reforms do not go ‘as planned’ but, as is always the case with processes of rationali- tion, have a series of unintended effects. At the same time it becomes incre- ingly clear who in this process are the winners and who are the losers, although this is still subject to fluctuation and change. This can be illustrated by two - amples from current events: Where the range of taught courses is concerned, as part of the Bologna Process the new structuring of student study paths and their organisation is aimed at unifying the European area of science to ensure a study that is equally permissive and efficient. However, it is to be deplored that the mobility of s- dents has become more restricted because of an increasing specialisation in the available study paths. Also, bachelor degrees do not meet with the anticipated high response from the labour market in all countries, so that the master’s degree is becoming more or less a ‘must’, while at the same time the number of study places on master’s courses is limited. Instead of the intended reduction in the duration of study time in comparison to the previous German ‘Magister’ and ‘Diplom’, rather a prolongation in the duration of studies has been recorded.
