Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the technical adequacy of different methods of curriculum-based measures (CBMs) of written expression for secondary students in special education. Differences in administration time and whether CBMs of writing can be used to measure gains in writing proficiency for secondary students in special education were also investigated. Benchmark and bi-weekly writing samples were collected from 47 students receiving special education in 6th through 12th grade during the 2009-2010 school year. Writing samples were scored for Correct Word Sequences (CWS), Incorrect Word Sequences (ICWS), and Correct Word Sequences minus Incorrect Word Sequences (CWS-ICWS). While results indicated low criterion-related validity with the state's language arts and writing test scores, strong alternate-form reliability was found for both 5 and 7 minute measures. Also, statistically significant results were found when examining the ability of CBMs of writing to measure the writing growth of secondary students in special education over time. Findings from this study demonstrated that CBMs of writing can be used as a progress monitoring tool, and a 5 minute administration time may be adequate for secondary students in special education. More research is needed to establish the criterion-related validity of these measures for this population.

It adds school-based validity evidence to the body of research literature that has demonstrated CBM to be valid and reliable for a number of assessment purposes. CBM reading and written expression scores for 678 Grade 6 and 7 students were compared to their year-end English and Social Studies marks received in Grades 8, 9 and 10. Correlational and regression analyses confirmed the predictive validity of CBM scores. Data on the academic programming of the students in secondary school allowed for discriminant analysis procedures that demonstrated the ability of CBM to differentiate between student groups of various proficiency levels. Overall, findings support the appropriateness of the use of CBM norms for local assessment applications, including the use of CBM as an indicator of academic performance when making special education eligibility decisions."--Page ii.

While support exists for the use of CBM measures in the area of writing, there is a need to conduct further validation studies to investigate the utility of these measures within elementary and secondary classrooms. Since only countable indices are used in CBM-W, this study explored the possibility of using an assessment that measured writing quality in conjunction with the CBM metric. To accomplish this, three pieces of data were used in this study. The CBM metrics of total words written, words spelled correctly, correct word sequences, percentage of words spelled correctly, and percentage of correct word sequences were scored from a timed writing passage that second grade students completed. Scores from the district writing assessment that classroom teachers rated using an analytic rubric that focused on quality were also analyzed. Last, a validated writing assessment, the TOWL-3, was used as the criterion measure. Using correlation and regression methods, results indicated that correct word sequences was the best predictor performance on the TOWL-3. Even though the teacher writing assessment correlated with the TOWL-3 at the significant level, adding it to the scores from the CBM-W measures did not significantly increase the validity.
