Download or read book Chinese Science Education in the 21st Century Policy Practice and Research written by Ling L. Liang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of science education policies, research and practices in mainland China, with specific examples of the most recent developments in these areas. It presents an insiders’ report on the status of Chinese science education written primarily by native speakers with first-hand experiences inside the country. In addition, the book features multiple sectional commentaries by experts in the field that further connect these stories to the existing science education literature outside of China. This book informs the international community about the current status of Chinese science education reforms. It helps readers understand one of the largest science education systems in the world, which includes, according to the Programme for International Student Assessment, the best-performing economy in the world in science, math and reading: Shanghai, China. Readers gain insight into how science education in the rest of China compares to that in Shanghai; the ways Chinese science educators, teachers and students achieve what has been accomplished; what Chinese students and teachers actually do inside their classrooms; what educational policies have been helpful in promoting student learning; what lessons can be shared within the international science education community; and much more. This book appeals to science education researchers, comparative education researchers, science educators, graduate students, state science education leaders and officers in the international communities. It also helps Chinese students and faculty of science education discover effective ways to share their science education stories with the rest of the world.
Download or read book Chinese Economic Statecraft written by William J. Norris and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Chinese Economic Statecraft, William J. Norris introduces an innovative theory that pinpoints how states employ economic tools of national power to pursue their strategic objectives. Norris shows what Chinese economic statecraft is, how it works, and why it is more or less effective. Norris provides an accessible tool kit to help us better understand important economic developments in the People's Republic of China. He links domestic Chinese political economy with the international ramifications of China’s economic power as a tool for realizing China’s strategic foreign policy interests. He presents a novel approach to studying economic statecraft that calls attention to the central challenge of how the state is (or is not) able to control and direct the behavior of economic actors.Norris identifies key causes of Chinese state control through tightly structured, substate and crossnational comparisons of business-government relations. These cases range across three important arenas of China’s grand strategy that prominently feature a strategic role for economics: China’s efforts to secure access to vital raw materials located abroad, Mainland relations toward Taiwan, and China’s sovereign wealth funds. Norris spent more than two years conducting field research in China and Taiwan during which he interviewed current and former government officials, academics, bankers, journalists, advisors, lawyers, and businesspeople. The ideas in this book are applicable beyond China and help us to understand how states exercise international economic power in the twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: All earnest and honest human quests for knowledge are efforts to understand Nature, which includes both human and nonhuman systems, the objects of study in science. Thus, broadly speaking, all these quests are in the science domain. The methods and tools used may be different; for example, the literary people use mainly their bodily sensors and their brain as the information processor, while natural scientists may use, in addition, measuring instruments and computers. Yet, all these activities could be viewed in a unified perspective OCo they are scientific developments at varying stages of maturity and have a lot to learn from each other. That OC everything in Nature is part of scienceOCO was well recognized by Aristotle, da Vinci and many others. Yet, it is only recently, with the advent of modern science and experiences gathered in the study of statistical physics, complex systems and other disciplines, that we know how the human-related disciplines can be studied scientifically. Science Matters is about all human-dependent knowledge, wherein humans (the material system of Homo sapiens) are studied scientifically from the perspective of complex systems. It includes all the topics covered in the humanities and social sciences. Containing contributions from knowledgeable humanists, social scientists and physicists, the book is intended for those OCo from artists to scientists OCo who are curious about the world and are interested in understanding it with a unified perspective.

Download or read book SPACE TO CREATE IN CHINESE SCIENCE FICTION written by Robert G. Price and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of Chinese science fiction will be of interest to students, SF fans, and even to those with a mere passing fancy of science fiction in the Middle Kingdom. The book is split into three main parts; firstly the development of Anglo-American and Chinese SF are compared - mainly for those who are new to the ""genre."" Next, the ""unspoken"" limiting guidelines for authors that no one can / will universally agree on are discussed. Also, historical case studies demonstrate why freedom to create is absolutely vital to the progressive developments of companies and even countries which also rings true for China's role in the 21st century. Finally, a sampling of 12 short stories by three major authors over the last forty years are examined for content that agrees with statements made about SF in China by experts in SF studies as well as authors themselves. All this helps even a novice in the subject to gain important insights into what it means to be an SF author in China.
Download or read book Communication and Popularization of Science and Technology in China written by Fujun Ren and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-12 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to be a reference for researchers studying the promotion of scientific literacy in China, as well as a guide for those interested in promoting scientific awareness. It covers advances in science and technology, communication and popularization practice, and research (STCP) both in China and abroad. Theoretical issues are discussed, and important problems in promoting scientific and technological awareness are identified (e.g.: basic principles, structures, channels of communication and current needs) This bookprovides a summary of the advances in STCP in China in recent years (especially after the issuing of the “National Scientific Literacy Outline”) including STCP resource and capacity building, science popularization policies, practitioner development, infrastructure construction, and the development of the science popularization industry as a whole. At the same time, this book also reviews thedesign, organization, monitoring and evaluation of science and technology communication and popularization programs. It also highlights current STCP trends and developments in China and calls for a greater emphasis to be placed on research into promoting scientific literacy. It is hoped that this book will be useful to readers both in China and abroad by familiarizing them with the history and theory of STCP as well as its development over time. The 1st chapter briefly reviews the history of STCP. The 2nd through 5th chapters discuss the conceptual framework, basic structure, methods of communication, and current STCP needs. The 6th chapter introduces the principle content of programs aimed at improving Chinese citizens’ scientific literacy, while the 7th and 8th chapters analyze the resources, capacities and conditions that have been developed for STCP in China. The 9th chapter investigates the organization, monitoring and evaluation of science popularization practices, and the final chapter summarizes important STCP topics and trends in contemporary China.

Download or read book Rethinking Scholarly Communication in China written by Liu Zhongbo and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-09-02 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines science and technology policies in China over time and explores the development of scholarly communication through the lens of the political economy of communication. Despite political censorship and restrictions on the production of academic knowledge in China, the number of scholarly publications has skyrocketed over the past 20 years. By explaining these seemingly contradictory phenomena, this study provides insight into the complex landscape of scholarly communication in China, shaped by the government in collaboration with commercial publishers. The book examines the dynamic relationship between the state and the market, including their key players, which determines the production and dissemination of academic knowledge. From a political economy perspective, it investigates how the academic governance complex, a system that intertwines communication, politics, and economics, has been established in China. It then discusses the impact of this system on the production of academic knowledge in the country. The title will serve as a key reference for academics, researchers, and students interested in the intersection of communication studies, librarianship, and political science, particularly those focusing on China's academic knowledge production and scholarly communication.
