Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the landfill tax and the introduction of a tax on the use of primary aggregates, increasing financial pressure is now being exerted on highway engineers to provide the most economic alternatives to naturally-occurring roadmaking materials. Alternative materials in road construction: Second edition, provides practical guidance in the selection of substitute materials, including the economic and technical considerations of their use and advice on the benefits and pitfalls of each material. This fully revised second edition includes: Extensively re-written and updated sections on classification and sources Specifications of road making materials and environmental and economic considerations Enlarged sections on construction and demolition wastes to take account of the increasing concern at the depletion of natural resources and the much greater emphasis on recycling A new chapter on Government and EC Policy with respect to environmental damage and recycling Alternative materials in road construction: Second edition is divided into three parts. Part 1 discusses the demand and requirements of road making materials and the specifications that they have to meet if they are to give sa

Book Waste Materials in Construction

Download or read book Waste Materials in Construction written by G.R. Woolley and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-05-12 with total page 1063 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the proceedings of the International Conference on The Science and Engineering of Recycling for Environmental Protection (WASCON 2000), of which a number of themes have been identified. All are inter-related and inter-dependent in so far as potential users of secondary, recovered or recycled material have to be assured that the material is environmentally safe and stable. It is the environmental challenge that forms a leading theme for the conference, and the themes of quality assurance and quality control support this aspect. In terms of use of 'recovered' materials, science and engineering play important and inter-dependent roles and this is reflected in themes which form the very core of the conference. Of no less importance is control of land contamination and how we propose to model for the long term impact of our aims. However dutiful and competent our ideas and studies, there has to be a measure of control and the role of legislation forms the final theme of WASCON 2000.The breadth of studies being undertaken world-wide and the innovative ideas that are expressed in papers submitted are worthy of this important subject. It is also interesting to note that papers were offered from 30 countries, a sign of the increasing awareness of the need to preserve our natural resources and utilize to the full those with which we are more familiar. This book will contribute to the understanding of and solution of environmental problems concerning the re-use of waste materials in construction.

Book Plastic Waste for Sustainable Asphalt Roads

Download or read book Plastic Waste for Sustainable Asphalt Roads written by Filippo Giustozzi and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2022-01-13 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waste polymers have been studied for various applications such as energy generation and biochemical production; however, their application in asphalt roads still poses some questions. Over the last decade, several studies have reported the utilization of waste plastics in roads using different methodologies and raw materials, but there is still significant inconsistency around this topic. What is the right methodology to recycle waste plastics for road applications? What is the correct type of waste plastics to be used in road applications? What environmental concerns could arise from the use of waste plastics in road applications? Plastic Waste for Sustainable Asphalt Roads covers the various processes and techniques for the utilization of waste plastics in asphalt mixes. The book discusses the various material properties and methodologies, effects of various methodologies, and combination of various polymers. It also provides information on the compatibility between bitumen and plastics, final asphalt performance, and environmental challenges. - Discusses the processes and techniques for utilization of waste plastics in asphalt mixes. - Features a life-cycle assessment of waste plastics in road surfaces and possible Environmental Product Declarations (EPD). - Includes examples of on-field usage through various case studies.

Book Uses of Recycled Rubber Tires in Highways

Download or read book Uses of Recycled Rubber Tires in Highways written by Jon A. Epps and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1994 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis on the use of recycled rubber tires in highways will be of interest to administrators and policy-makers; pavement, materials, geotechnical, environmental, and traffic operations engineers; and research engineers involved with highway design and construction issues. Information is provided on the uses of rubber tires in asphalt paving materials as well as other uses, such as on fills and embankments, for erosion control and on railroad grade crossings. Specifically, information is included which identifies the agencies using or implementing applications for recycled rubber tires and defines the design parameters, technical and construction limitations, performance, costs, benefits, environmental limitations, specifications, and availability. This synthesis of information defines the use of recycled rubber tires in highways and is based on a review of nearly 500 references and on information recorded from state highway agency responses to a 1991 survey of practice. Updates are included for as much of the state practice information possible through 1993. The use of scrap tires for highway applications is dynamic with regard to policy and technical issues. Therefore, the reader should keep in mind that the information presented reflects the best available data at a particular time. The synthesis also identifies current research in the topic area, critical research needs, and legislative issues that affect application and use of recycled rubber tires.
