Book Persistence and Resistance in English Studies

Download or read book Persistence and Resistance in English Studies written by Elisabet Pladevall-Ballester and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Persistence and Resistance: New Research in English Studies gathers together a selection of articles by members of the Association of Young Researchers in Anglophone Studies (ASYRAS). The volume covers a wide range of topics dealing with English literature and culture, language and linguistics. Varied in content and methodology, the articles here offer valuable insights into how young researchers approach the field of English Studies at a time of crisis when the very existence of the university is at risk. The work gathered here also shows that we need to reconsider the meaning of international research. Based mostly in Spanish universities, the researchers gathered here come from a variety of national backgrounds, mainly Spanish, but also British, American, Eastern European and Chinese. They are producing research in English Studies in a global Anglophone environment, contributing at the same time – with persistence and resistance – new approaches that enhance the research produced in the geographical areas where English is spoken.

Book Shakespeare s Foreign Worlds

Download or read book Shakespeare s Foreign Worlds written by Carole Levin and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2012-06-15 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Shakespeare's Foreign Worlds, Carole Levin and John Watkins focus on the relationship between the London-based professional theater preeminently associated with William Shakespeare and an unprecedented European experience of geographic, social, and intellectual mobility. Shakespeare's plays bear the marks of exile and exploration, rural depopulation, urban expansion, and shifting mercantile and diplomatic configurations. He fills his plays with characters testing the limits of personal identity: foreigners, usurpers, outcasts, outlaws, scolds, shrews, witches, mercenaries, and cross-dressers. Through parallel discussions of Henry VI, The Taming of the Shrew, and The Merchant of Venice, Levin and Watkins argue that Shakespeare's centrality to English national consciousness is inseparable from his creation of the foreign as a category asserting dangerous affinities between England's internal minorities and its competitors within an increasingly fraught European mercantile system. As a women's historian, Levin is particularly interested in Shakespeare's responses to marginalized sectors of English society. As a scholar of English, Italian Studies, and Medieval Studies, Watkins situates Shakespeare in the context of broadly European historical movements. Together Levin and Watkins narrate the emergence of the foreign as portable category that might be applied both to "strangers" from other countries and to native-born English men and women, such as religious dissidents, who resisted conformity to an increasingly narrow sense of English identity. Shakespeare's Foreign Worlds will appeal to historians, literary scholars, theater specialists, and anyone interested in Shakespeare and the Elizabethan Age.

Book Literary Research and British Postmodernism

Download or read book Literary Research and British Postmodernism written by Bridgit McCafferty and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-09-02 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary Research and British Postmodernism is a guide for scholars that aims to connect the complex relationships between print and multimedia, technological advancements, and the influence of critical theory that converge in postwar British literature. This era is unique in that strict boundaries between fiction, nonfiction, multimedia and print are not useful. Postmodern literature is defined by the breaking down of boundaries as a reaction to modernism and requires an innovative, multifaceted approach to research. In this guide the authors explore these complex relationships and offer strategies for researching this new period of literature. This book takes a holistic approach to postmodern literature that recognizes the way in which digital media, film, critical theory, popular music and more traditional print sources are inextricably linked. Through this approach, the authors present a broad view of “postmodernism” that includes a wide variety of British authors writing in the last half of the twentieth century. The book’s definition of “postmodern” includes any British literature following World War II that engages issues central to postmodern theory, including the social construction of gender, sexuality, and power; the subjectivity of truth; technology as a social force; intertextuality; metafiction; post-colonial narrative; and fantasy. This guide aims to aid researchers of postwar British literature by defining best practices for scholars conducting research in a period so broadly varied in the way it defines literature.

Book Out of his mind

    Book Details:
  • Author : Amy Milne-Smith
  • Publisher : Manchester University Press
  • Release : 2022-04-26
  • ISBN : 1526155044
  • Pages : 183 pages

Download or read book Out of his mind written by Amy Milne-Smith and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-26 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Out of His Mind interrogates how Victorians made sense of the madman as both a social reality and a cultural representation. Even at the height of enthusiasm for the curative powers of nineteenth-century psychiatry, to be certified as a lunatic meant a loss of one’s freedom and in many ways one’s identify. Because men had the most power and authority in Victorian Britain, this also meant they had the most to lose. The madman was often a marginal figure, confined in private homes, hospitals, and asylums. Yet as a cultural phenomenon he loomed large, tapping into broader social anxieties about respectability, masculine self-control, and fears of degeneration. Using a wealth of case notes, press accounts, literature, medical and government reports, this text provides a rich window into public understandings and personal experiences of men’s insanity.

These, in their turn, reflect the issues which constitute the complex nature of language and culture, and their mutual relationship. The authors’ interests encompass aspects related to the structural and rhetorical organization of languages approached both individually and cross-linguistically; first and second language acquisition; issues of translation and rendering considered from linguistic and cultural perspectives; and the cultural construction of meaning and identity as reflected in literature and art.
