Book The Changing Boundaries of the Firm

Download or read book The Changing Boundaries of the Firm written by Massimo G. Colombo and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a distinctive analysis of the relations and interplay between the internal activities of firms, their changing boundaries, and increasing reliance on networks and alliances with other firms. The contributors offer a blend of theoretical and empirical studies; they are based on a set of related perspectives in modern economics, including transaction cost economics, competence and resource-based theories of the firm, evolutionary economics and the theories of foreign direct investments and the multinational enterprise. The unifying concern shared by the different studies is the need to model firm behaviour and inter firm cooperative activities in terms of knowledge growth and competence building rather than merely in terms of cost-reduction; they emphasize learning processes and dynamic efficiency rather than efficient allocation of given resources.

Book Databook on Nonfatal Injury

Download or read book Databook on Nonfatal Injury written by Ted R. Miller and published by The Urban Insitute. This book was released on 1995 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Injury may be the most preventable major health care problem in the United States. It is also extremely costly, with one in eight hospital discharges and days of care relating to injury. Yet, published data on injury frequency, costs, and consequences are limited. This book is a reference volume with a correction factor for inflation updates and should, therefore, be useful for many years. The book examines selected costs of injury by body region, by body part, and by nature of injury (e.g., fracture, laceration). It estimates long-term consequences and addresses the costs of occupational injuries, consumer product injuries, intentional interpersonal injuries, motor vehicle crash injuries, and suicide. This information is for hospitals, lawyers and expert witnesses, insurers, doctors, program planners and evaluators, saftey advocates, and injured people themselves. The health care reform debate has highlighted the importance of data in monitoring and shaping national health policy. The costs and level of detail reported here should also help inform health policy discussions.

Book excerpt: This document contains project updates for the Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems (IVHS) Institutional and Legal Issues Program. Through focused research, the department hopes to find solutions to specific problems facing IVHS participants and policy makers. The department is taking a careful look at lessons learned in IVHS operational tests and models for IVHS deployment. Analysis is underway to understand the impact and bvenefits IVHS deployment could have on air quality, privacy, user acceptance, and other areas of concern to society at large.

Book Review of the 21st Century Truck Partnership

Download or read book Review of the 21st Century Truck Partnership written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-10-19 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 21st Century Truck Partnership (21CTP), a cooperative research and development partnership formed by four federal agencies with 15 industrial partners, was launched in the year 2000 with high hopes that it would dramatically advance the technologies used in trucks and buses, yielding a cleaner, safer, more efficient generation of vehicles. Review of the 21st Century Truck Partnership critically examines and comments on the overall adequacy and balance of the 21CTP. The book reviews how well the program has accomplished its goals, evaluates progress in the program, and makes recommendations to improve the likelihood of the Partnership meeting its goals. Key recommendations of the book include that the 21CTP should be continued, but the future program should be revised and better balanced. A clearer goal setting strategy should be developed, and the goals should be clearly stated in measurable engineering terms and reviewed periodically so as to be based on the available funds.

Download or read book The Multisensory Driver written by Dr Cristy Ho and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Driver inattention has been identified as one of the leading causes for car accidents. The problem of distraction while driving is likely to worsen, partly due to increasingly complex in-car technologies. However, intelligent transport systems are being developed to assist drivers and to ensure a safe road environment. One approach to the design of ergonomic automobile systems is to integrate our understanding of the human information processing systems into the design process. This book aims to further the design of ergonomic multisensory interfaces using research from the fast-growing field of cognitive neuroscience. It focuses on two aspects of driver information-processing in particular: multisensory interactions and the spatial distribution of attention in driving. The Multisensory Driver provides interface design guidelines together with a detailed review of current cognitive neuroscience and behavioural research in multisensory human perception, which will help the development of ergonomic interfaces. The discussion on spatial attention is particularly relevant for car interface designers, but it will also appeal to cognitive psychologists interested in spatial attention and the applications of these theoretical research findings. Giving a detailed description of a cohesive series of psychophysical experiments on multisensory warning signals, conducted in both laboratory and simulator settings, this book provides an approach for those in the engineering discipline who wish to test their systems with human observers.

Book World Report on Road Traffic Injury Prevention

Download or read book World Report on Road Traffic Injury Prevention written by Marjorie Peden and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2008-09 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day thousands of people are killed and injured on our roads. Millions of people each year will spend long weeks in the hospital after severe crashes and many will never be able to live, work or play as they used to do. Current efforts to address road safety are minimal in comparison to this growing human suffering. This report presents a comprehensive overview of what is known about the magnitude, risk factors and impact of road traffic injuries, and about ways to prevent and lessen the impact of road crashes. Over 100 experts, from all continents and different sectors -- including transport, engineering, health, police, education and civil society -- have worked to produce the report. Charts and tables.
