Book Atomic and Molecular Manipulation

Download or read book Atomic and Molecular Manipulation written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-07-13 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work with individual atoms and molecules aims to demonstrate that miniaturized electronic, optical, magnetic, and mechanical devices can operate ultimately even at the level of a single atom or molecule. As such, atomic and molecular manipulation has played an emblematic role in the development of the field of nanoscience. New methods based on the use of the scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) have been developed to characterize and manipulate all the degrees of freedom of individual atoms and molecules with an unprecedented precision. In the meantime, new concepts have emerged to design molecules and substrates having specific optical, mechanical and electronic functions, thus opening the way to the fabrication of real nano-machines. Manipulation of individual atoms and molecules has also opened up completely new areas of research and knowledge, raising fundamental questions of "Optics at the atomic scale", "Mechanics at the atomic scale", Electronics at the atomic scale", "Quantum physics at the atomic scale", and "Chemistry at the atomic scale". This book aims to illustrate the main aspects of this ongoing scientific adventure and to anticipate the major challenges for the future in "Atomic and molecular manipulation" from fundamental knowledge to the fabrication of atomic-scale devices. - Provides a broad overview of the field to aid those new and entering into this research area - Presents a review of the historical development and evolution of the field - Offers a clear personalized view of current scanning probe microscopy research from world experts

Book Physics of Transition Metal Oxides

Download or read book Physics of Transition Metal Oxides written by Sadamichi Maekawa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-06-22 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fact that magnetite (Fe304) was already known in the Greek era as a peculiar mineral is indicative of the long history of transition metal oxides as useful materials. The discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in 1986 has renewed interest in transition metal oxides. High-temperature su perconductors are all cuprates. Why is it? To answer to this question, we must understand the electronic states in the cuprates. Transition metal oxides are also familiar as magnets. They might be found stuck on the door of your kitchen refrigerator. Magnetic materials are valuable not only as magnets but as electronics materials. Manganites have received special attention recently because of their extremely large magnetoresistance, an effect so large that it is called colossal magnetoresistance (CMR). What is the difference between high-temperature superconducting cuprates and CMR manganites? Elements with incomplete d shells in the periodic table are called tran sition elements. Among them, the following eight elements with the atomic numbers from 22 to 29, i. e. , Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu are the most im portant. These elements make compounds with oxygen and present a variety of properties. High-temperature superconductivity and CMR are examples. Most of the textbooks on magnetism discuss the magnetic properties of transition metal oxides. However, when one studies magnetism using tradi tional textbooks, one finds that the transport properties are not introduced in the initial stages.

Book Magnetic Transition Metals

Download or read book Magnetic Transition Metals written by Albrecht Goldmann and published by Springer. This book was released on 1999-04-14 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photoelectron spectroscopy has matured considerably during the last decade. The experimental techniques were improved impressively and a deeper theoretical insight into the underlying mechanisms of photoemission could be achieved. The present volume III/23C2 is a critically and as comprehensive as possible tabulation of data on the bulk electronic structure of magnetic transition metals, obtained by electron and photon spectroscopies. This volume presents, besides the photoelectron results, and calculated dispersion curves, also a limited set of other data like lattice constants and work functions useful in the context of band structure information. Tables of frequently used symbols and of abbreviations are given in a general introduction where also definitions of the quantities and some historical remarks are included.

Book Electrical Electronic and Magnetic Properties of Solids

Download or read book Electrical Electronic and Magnetic Properties of Solids written by D. B. Sirdeshmukh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book about electrical, electronic and magnetic properties of solids gives guidance to understand the electrical conduction processes and magnetism in a whole range of solids: ionic solids, metals, semiconductors, fast-ion conductors and superconductors. The experimental discussion is enriched by related theories like the free electron theory and the band theory of solids. A large spectrum of topics is presented in this book: Hall effect, magnetoresistance, physics of semiconductors, functioning of semiconductor devices, fast-ion conduction, classical and modern aspects of superconductivity. The book explains the magnetic properties of solids and theoretical and experimental aspects of the various manifestations of magnetism, dia-, para-, ferro-, antiferro- and ferri-magnetism. The consideration of magnetic symmetry, magnetic structures and their experimental determination completes the spectrum of the book. Theories, techniques and applications of NMR and ESR complete the analytical spectrum presented. Some of these topics are not represented in standard books. Each topic is thoroughly treated. There are historical remarks and a discussion of the role of symmetry in the book. The book lays great emphasis on principles and concepts and is written in a comprehensive way. It contains much new information. This book complements an earlier book by the same authors (Atomistic properties of solids - Springer, 2011).
