Book Current Methods of Fracture toughness Testing of High strength Alloys with Emphasis on Plane Strain

Download or read book Current Methods of Fracture toughness Testing of High strength Alloys with Emphasis on Plane Strain written by J. E. Campbell and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fracture-toughness testing using principles of fracture mechanics has developed to the point where it can be used as a basis for selection of materials, for estimating limiting design stresses assuming the presence of small flaws, and for analyzing failures. Current methods of measuring plane-stress and plane-strain fracturetoughness parameters are presented in this report. The specimens include center-cracked, edge-cracked, single-edge-cracked, surface-cracked, and notched round bars, which are subjected to tensile loading, and notched bars for bend tests. The different types of specimens permit evaluating sheet, plate, bar stock, and forgings as well as material from failed structures. Application of fracture-toughness parameters to design of high-strength structures is reviewed for both static and fatigue loading. Consideration of the fracture-mechanics concepts in design should lead to fewer problems with brittle fracture in high-strength structures. (Author).

Book Engineering Fracture Design

Download or read book Engineering Fracture Design written by H. Liebowitz and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fracture: An Advanced Treatise, Volume IV: Engineering Fracture Design presents the development and status of knowledge on sudden, catastrophic failure of structures due to unexpected brittle fracture of component materials. This book provides information pertinent to the engineering fracture design as well as the microscopic and macroscopic fundamentals of fracture. Organized into eight chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the evaluation of fracture tests. This text then presents an analysis of temperature effects on fracture. Other chapters consider the fracture and carrying capacity of long, slender columns and related topics. This book discusses as well the problems in connection with columns, beams, and plates, and experimental evidence to support theories proposed for describing the strength and stiffness of these elements. The final chapter presents an analysis of the problem of brittle fracture in weldments. This book is a valuable resource for engineers, students, and research workers in industrial organizations, education and research institutions, and various government agencies.

Book Welding High strength Steels

Download or read book Welding High strength Steels written by P. A. Kammer and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent studies of the developments in welding steels with yield strengths greater than 150 ksi have included low-alloy martensitic steels, medium-alloy martensitic steels, nickel maraging steels, and bainitic steels. Only weldments from medium-alloy martensitic steels and nickel maraging steels have mechanical properties approaching those of the base plate without a complete postweld heat treatment. The most serious problem with the other steel is low toughness in the weld fusion zone. Adequate weld metal toughness under conditions of elastic strain can be obtarined over the entire 150 to 225 ksi yield-strength range only if the tungsten-arc welding process is used. Processes with higher deposition rates can produce comparable weld deposits only in the lower portion of the range. Above a yield strength of 200 ksi, 18Ni maraging steel weldments have the best combination of strength and toughness. Below 200 ksi, the HP 9-4-25 medium-alloy martensitic steel and 12Ni maraging steel weldments have nearly equal properties.

Book Correlation of Two Fracture Toughness Tests for Titanium and Ferrous Alloys

Download or read book Correlation of Two Fracture Toughness Tests for Titanium and Ferrous Alloys written by Charles N. Freed and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-strength ferrous and titanium alloys are of interest for use in complex structures; a knowledge of the notch fracture toughness of these alloys is necessary to preclude catastrophic failure. A previously established relationship between the dynamic tear test energy and the explosion tear test performance provides reliable fracture-toughness information of those alloys characterized by a toughness level requiring plastic deformation to propagate fracture. This analysis has not been extended to the ultrahigh-strength alloys in which fracture can propagate castastrophically at elastic stress levels. For these alloys, the analytical methods of linear elastic fracture mechanics provide the required elastic stress level and flaw-size relationship for fracture. This report deals with a 'marriage' of the two approaches-the engineering and the analytical-by correlative techniques. (Author).

Book Metal Removal by Electrochemical Methods and Its Effects on Mechanical Properties of Metals

Download or read book Metal Removal by Electrochemical Methods and Its Effects on Mechanical Properties of Metals written by John A. Gurklis and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report assembles and correlates information on the effects of electrochemical metal-removal (ECMR) processes on mechanical properties. Of special interest and concern are the effects of ECMR on fatigue strength. The report covers four electrochemical metal-removal processes: electrochemical machining (ECM), electrolytic grinding (EG), electrochemical milling, and electropolishing. General characteristics and applications of the four methods are presented and discussed; special emphasis is placed on ECM. The ECMR processes are especially useful in shaping high-strength and difficult-to-machine metals and alloys, as well as in shaping parts with unusual, complex, or fragile characteristics. (Author).

Book Fracture Toughness Testing

Download or read book Fracture Toughness Testing written by John E. Srawley and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive survey is presented of current methods of fracture toughness testing that are based on linear elastic fracture mechanics. General principles are discussed in relation to the basic two-dimensional crack stress field model and in relation to real three-dimensional specimens. The designs and necessary dimensions of specimens for mixed mode and opening mode (plane strain) crack toughness measurement are considered in detail. Methods of test instrumentation and procedure are described. Expressions for the calculation of crack toughness values are given for the common types of specimens.
