Book Iodine Deficiency Disorders and Their Elimination

Download or read book Iodine Deficiency Disorders and Their Elimination written by Elizabeth N. Pearce and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-20 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iodine is an essential micronutrient and an integral component of the thyroid hormones, which are required for normal growth and development. The iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) encompass a spectrum of adverse health effects including goiter, cretinism, hypothyroidism, growth retardation, and increased pregnancy loss and infant mortality. This volume summarizes the current understanding of the effects of iodine deficiency as well as iodine excess. It also discusses best practices for salt iodization, the mainstay of global IDD prevention efforts, and other forms of food fortification. The effectiveness of iodine supplementation for vulnerable populations, an evolving strategy in many regions, is also described. Low level environmental exposure to chemicals such as perchlorate and thiocyanate, which competitively block thyroidal iodine uptake, appears to be ubiquitous worldwide. There has been recent concern that such environmental exposures might pose a health hazard by inducing or aggravating underlying thyroid dysfunction. This up-to-date volume explores both the effects of iodine deficiency as well as the best strategies for IDD prevention.

Book Comprehensive Handbook of Iodine

Download or read book Comprehensive Handbook of Iodine written by Victor R Preedy and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 1335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over two billion people worldwide are at risk for the spectrum of disorders known as "The Iodine Deficiency Disorders." 1-10% will suffer cretinism; 5-30% will have some sort of brain damage or neurological impairment and 30-70% will be hypothyroid. The causes of iodine deficiencies can be considered from both simplistic and more complex perspectives: From the leaching of iodine from soil resulting in crops with low iodine content to malnutrition resulting in impaired iodine absorption. Poor dietary diversification and impoverished socio-economic development can also lead to iodine deficiencies. Although it is possible to diagnose and treat deficiencies, there is still an ongoing dialogue regarding the detailed molecular pathology of iodine homeostatis, how hypothyroidism impacts the body tissues, and efficient diagnosis and treatment of the Iodine Deficiency Disorders. This Handbook provides a resource of information on the various pathways and processes based on different countries or diseases. Because there is a constant flow of new information on iodine and related disorders, the goal of this Handbook is to provide a base of scientific information upon which additional knowledge can be applied. Provides important information on one of the most common micro-nutrient deficiencies in the world, the most important "single nutrient-multiple consequences" paradigm today Includes information on iodine-related diseases, including those that are common, preventable and treatable Provides insight from a broad perspective of viewpoints -- from subcellular transports to economic impact

Book Endemic Cretinism

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Dennison
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2011-09-25
  • ISBN : 1461402816
  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Endemic Cretinism written by John Dennison and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-25 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Responding to a renewed interest in the growing problem of iodine deficiency worldwide, Drs. Charles Oxnard and Peter Obendorf, along with experienced translator and anatomist John Dennison, take a fresh look at the classic text, Der endemische Kretinismus, published in 1936 by Springer. Translated here for the first time into English, this landmark text will be a welcome resource for researchers confronting the problem of iodine deficiency. Oxnard and Obendorf point out that there is very little detailed knowledge or numerical data on cretinism available in the English-speaking world. In addition, highly-renowned Professor Basil S. Hetzel, recently-retired World Health Organization Chairman of the International Council for Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders, published in 2009 with Dr Chen Zu-pei on the resurgence of iodine deficiency in China. Indeed, throughout the entire developing world there may be as many as two billion people at risk to iodine deficiency; perhaps three quarters of a billion have goiter, and ten million may be cretins. Even in developed countries, iodine deficiency is re-emerging (as in New South Wales in 19% of children) with the result of significantly reduced numbers of gifted children (though this is not cretinism per se). Certain to be of significant interest to a wide range of researchers, health providers and professionals, including government health administrators, this English translation of Endemic Cretinism is a major contribution to the literature.

Book Analysis of the Iodine Deficiency Situation in Latin America Trends and Action Strategies

Download or read book Analysis of the Iodine Deficiency Situation in Latin America Trends and Action Strategies written by Arnulfo Noguera and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review of the literature and of the most recent available reports on iodine deficieny and its control programs in Latin America was made, including goiter prevalence, iodine urinary excretion, salt iodization, supplementation of iodized compounds, current legal provisions, and action plans for the prevention and control of iodine deficiency disorders. Likewise, different actions of interagency coordination carried out during 1983-1994 to control iodine deficiency disorders in Latin America were reviewed and analyzed. Results are described in Chapter VII, and summaries of the information from the countries in Chapter VIII. The conclusions and suggestions for future actions are presented in Chapters IX and X, and the data sources and references in Chapter XI. Annex I presents the tables, and Annex II, a form prepared by the WHO Nutrition Unit in Geneva, with the aim that all the countries keep updated standardized data, thus facilitating information exchange and compatibility at international level. Annex III presents the Declaration of the Representatives of the Central American Governments and the salt industry for the Eradication of Iodine Deficienchy Disorders, and Annex IV the Declaration of Quito on Universal Salt Iodization.

Book National Report on Biochemical Indicators of Diet and Nutrition in the U S Population 1999 2002

Download or read book National Report on Biochemical Indicators of Diet and Nutrition in the U S Population 1999 2002 written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report provides reference information for blood or urine concentrations of 27 biochemical indicators of diet and nutrition measured by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Division of Laboratory Sciences at the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH/DLS). The indicators were measured in specimens from a representative sample of the noninstitutionalized civilian U.S. population during all or part of the four-year period from 1999 through 2002. These specimens were collected by CDC's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which is conducted by CDC's National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). NHANES is a series of surveys designed to collect data on the health and nutritional status of the U.S. population. This report covers one important facet in the assessment of nutritional status of the U.S. population: biochemical measurements. Other aspects, such as anthropometric body measurements, hematologic measurements, clinical signs of nutritional deficiency or excess, and dietary intake, are not covered." - p. 3
