Book excerpt: This volume provides a comprehensive and state-of-the-art text for health care professionals who are interested in the diagnosis and treatment of nausea and vomiting. Because the majority of causes of nausea and vomiting arise from disorders of the gastrointestinal system, the text emphasizes the GI system by organ from esophagus to colon. It also reviews how disorders of the abdominal wall, the endocrine system, and autonomic and central nervous systems can contribute to nausea and vomiting syndromes that can be difficult to diagnose. Various treatment modalities are presented and organized in terms of drug treatments, electrical stimulation devices, and dietary therapy and nutritional support. Furthermore, the book is enhanced by chapters on the pathophysiology of nausea, the pathophysiology of vomiting, the physiological changes in the brain during nausea and vomiting, and the psychological underpinnings of nausea and vomiting. And because many children are afflicted with unexplained nausea and vomiting, a chapter devoted to pediatric patients is also included. Written by authorities in the field, Nausea and Vomiting: Diagnosis and Treatment is a valuable resource that will help practitioners and healthcare providers consider specific diagnoses in treating the noxious and burdensome symptoms of nausea and vomiting.

  • ISBN : 8847007631

Download or read book Biliary Lithiasis written by Giuseppe Borzellino and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-11-27 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first laparoscopic cholecystectomy, performed by Prof. Philippe Mouret in 1987 and described by himself in the first chapter of this book, was an event that revolutionized surgery in the past few decades. Although the majority of surgeons today are unfamiliar with the his- ry of early minimally invasive surgery developments, it is important to realize that the advent of laparoscopy led not only to new surgical te- niques, but also to a change in the doctrine of medical care, by streng- ening the concept of minimal invasiveness. This is particularly the case for biliary lithiasis, for which laparoscopy has provided major benefits in terms of both diagnosis and surgical tre- ment. However, our understanding of the etiology of this disease, as well as the availability of effective medical therapies, have remained subst- tially unchanged over time. The application of the innovative approach has not been, in routine practice, without problems: between 1990 and 2000, the rate of serious complications from laparoscopic cholecystectomy were four times higher than those observed with open surgery. Even initial attempts at lapa- scopic treatment of biliary common bile duct stones resulted in excessive complications and associated medico-legal problems. Nonetheless, today, most indications have been stated, techniques have been standardized, and a new aspect to the treatment of biliary lithiasis has appeared.
