Download or read book Current and Future Economic Benefits of British Columbia Parks Update written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study updates and extends a previous report that reviewed the economic contribution of provincial parks to the British Columbia economy. It begins with an overview of the provincial park system and presents a qualitative analysis of the recreational, conservation, and heritage benefits resulting from parks and ecological reserves. Where appropriate, specific types of social and economic benefits related to these topics are identified. It then outlines the indicators used to measure the parks' economic impacts and their associated benefits, and presents quantitative estimates of economic activity attributable to the provincial parks. The estimates are made using an input/output model that incorporates input/output data from Statistics Canada along with additional data concerning employment and tax flows from other government sources. Finally, the study forecasts future economic benefits from the provincial parks under two scenarios of potential economic activity, based on the year 2002. The appendix includes additional details on the economic measures used in the analysis.

Book Second Growth

Download or read book Second Growth written by Sean Markey and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is drawn from a three-year participatory research project with four communities in British Columbia: two municipalities and two Aboriginal communities. It examines historical and contemporary forces of restructuring, linking the development of rural communities with the legacy of resource development and Aboriginal marginalization across the province. The book then presents the theoretical and practical dynamics of the community economic development (CED) process and outlines a variety of strategies communities can initiate to diversify their local economies. Second Growth shows that sound theoretical frameworks and tested best practices are important tools in facilitating the prospects for a second growth in rural and small-town communities.

Book excerpt: This book gives voice to a group of leisure scholars who are engaged in conversations about sustainability. Beginning with discussions on the relationship between leisure and sustainability and how these concepts are addressed in current literature, a case is made for continued investigation of how leisure and sustainability need to be better understood; and viewed as integrally linked. The book discusses issues related to environmental sustainability; how, at the local level, leisure is considered as a solution to a range of social, environmental, and economic issues; and the value of leisure as an asset for addressing several social sustainability challenges. This book was originally published as a special issue of Leisure/Loisir: Journal of the Canadian Association for Leisure Studies.
