Coin collecting can lead to a compelling interest in the study of cultural differences as numismatists have come to appreciate the semantic connection between numisma (coinage) and nomos (customs) with nonos (laws). Those interested in economics and business would find, through the study of numismatics, a wealth of information—the equivalent of a life-long education—not only in the study of coins and currencies, but also about people and their history. Culture is defined by the values, norms, and beliefs shared among its members and supported by its cultural institutions. A symbiotic relationship exists between a currency and its culture and society. The extent to which cultural institutions encourage and reinforce their economic foundations indicates the degree of a culture’s success or failure. This book offers insights into how cultural institutions can strengthen their citizens’ values and beliefs with that of their currency, and enhance the process of trade and exchange for the betterment and prosperity of its people. The Latin phrase “cui bono?” translates into “to whose profit or advantage?” Currencies and Cultures reexamines and challenges our current understanding of economic history—and provides insights into human behavior by following the money.

Foreign exchange (FX) is often thought of as a site where economic actors exchange currencies for buying foreign goods or selling goods in foreign countries, but the FX markets are better understood as financial spheres, dominated by speculative actors. A key question is how this huge global speculative sphere has developed, and what maintains it. Thus far, global currency markets have been largely neglected by the new approaches to finance, and until now no study has existed to chart the interplay of their structural evolution and their shape as knowledge spheres. This new book offers a systematic study of FX markets from a knowledge sociological perspective, empirically focussing on analysts within these markets. It makes the argument that market structures are reflected in, and become stabilised by, distinct cultures of financial expertise. These cultures connect the actions and perceptions of loosely coupled, globally distributed market players, and establish shared sets of strategies of how to observe, valuate and invest. This highly original book will be of interest to scholars of economics, sociology and political science, and in particular to all those with an interest in the sociology of finance and the role of finance in the contemporary world.

In this environment, it may be optimal for countries to have different currencies; we also identify conditions where separate national currencies do not expand the set of optimal allocations. Yet beyond capital transfer, these diasporic remittance economies offer insight into an unfolding transformation of Vietnamese society through the extension of imaginations and ontological possibilities that accompany them. Currencies of Imagination examines the complex role of remittances as money and as gifts that flow across, and mediate between, transnational kinship networks dispersed by exile and migration. Long distance international gift exchanges and channels in a neoliberal political economy juxtapose the increasing cross-border mobility of remittance financial flows against the relative confines of state bounded bodies. In this contradiction Ivan V. Small reveals a creative space for emergent imaginaries that disrupt local structures and scales of desire, labor and expectation. Furthermore, the particular characteristics of remittance channels and mediums in a global economy, including transnational mobility and exchangeable value, affect and reflect the relations, aspirations, and orientations of the exchange participants. Small traces a genealogy of how this phenomenon has shifted through changing remittance forms and transfer infrastructures, from material and black market to formal bank and money services. Transformations in the affective and institutional relations among givers, receivers, and remittance facilitators accompany each of these shifts, illustrating that the socio-cultural work of remittances extends far beyond the formal economic realm they are usually consigned to.
