Book The Hidden Places of the Peak District and Derbyshire

Download or read book The Hidden Places of the Peak District and Derbyshire written by Jim Gracie and published by Travel Publishing Limited. This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the 7th edition of the popular Hidden Places of the Peak District & Derbyshire which has been extensively redesigned to include a striking new cover and new page layouts. In addition, although you will still find details of places of interest and entries of places to stay, eat and drink included under each village or town, these are now cross-referenced to more detailed information contained in a separate, easy-to-use section at the back of the book. This beautifully illustrated guide explores the county in a relaxed narrative style by guiding the reader to some of the established visitor attractions but also focusing on the more secluded and less well-known places of interest and places to stay, eat and drink. The Peak District National Park was the very first of Britain's National Parks covering an area of 540 square miles and offers windswept moorland, steep river valleys and impressive crags to the north, and green landscapes and gentle flowing rivers to the south. In contrast the rest of Derbyshire offers the visitor an intriguing mix of villages and towns packed with a cultural and industrial heritage.

Concerning the magnificent range of building, that extends along the grand (errace, antf is now without a roof, there have been different opinions as to the time when, and the person' by whom, it was erected. Dr. Peggeand Lord Orford supposed it to have been built soon after the revolution; but Mr. Bray and Messrs. Lysons, with far greater probability, fix its date before that period. The last mentioned authors consider the date of Diepenbeck's view of Bolsover (1652) to be decisive of the point; and they add, "it is equally certain, that it must have been erected before the civil wars, indeed before the royal visit, it being impracticable that the king and queen, with their court, and all the gentry of the country, could' have been entertained in the mansion already1 described: indeed from the slight manner, in' which the duchess, in the life of her husband, speaks of the additions made by him to Bolsover castle, we think it a more probable conjecture, that the great range of building, now in ruins, was built as well as the mansion which is now habitable by his father. The duke's addition probably consisted of the spacious riding-house, for the practice of his favourite amusment, the smithy, &c."--" It is certain that the state apartments were not dismantled till after the year 1710, at which time Bassano speaks of them as furnished, and describes the pictures there in the several rooms, which are said to have been removed to Wei-beck. Of the extent of this structute some idea may be formed from the dimensions of the gallery, which was two hundred and twenty feet in length, and twenty eight feet wide. The castle, in later times, has descended from the families of Cavendish, of Hollis...
