This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Medical Treatment of Cancer As the journalistic reviews of my sec ond little book have been so encouraging I venture to put forth another, a third acorn, in the hopes that it may excite further interest in this most important subject, and lead others to investigate the matter and to report their experience and cases along the lines indicated. I should also be glad of just criticisms on a sci entific basis. It is not a little remarkable that during the past year or so there has been such a Singular dearth of surgical articles on cancer, as a careful search of literature shows, and so many journal articles, editorial and other, looking toward the thoughts on cancer which I have endeavored to present. It is sin cerely to be hoped that this ratio will in crease more and more, and we shall soon see a radical diminution in the death rate of cancer, which is so longed for by all. But it required more than another year's treatment before the tumour was quite gone, and during this time the changes were rung on the already mentioned remedies and some others, of which two seemed particularly of advantage, viz.: Urea (6-12) and Hecla, both of which have more than once done me good service in stubborn cases of tumours, the former particularly in gouty persons. The cure holds good, for I saw the lady quite lately and enquired. This case was rather instructive to me, more particularly from a patho-aetiological stand-point, inasmuch as eczema had preceded the tumour-formation, and when the eczema had been got rid cf by external means the uterine fibroid began to grow; moreover, after the tumour had quite gone, eczema broke out again. Quite a number of cases of tumour t/ have their" starting point in silenced cutaneous discharges; this is no vague theoretical statement, but a fact in nature which I have oft verified and...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Control of a Scourge: Or How Cancer Is Curable Opposition which burnt in many quarters during its earliest years, and to ensure for it a place among the elect of science. A different fate, a weary waiting, has dogged the slow but sure footsteps of other discoveries. Amongst these is that of the curability of cancer by surgical operation. To any who will take the trouble to study this question, to any who will look into the results of former years and compare them with the results to-day, the fact that a revolution has been in progress during the last quarter of a century in the treatment of cancer is clear. Yet the advance has been so slow, the number of cases cured by operation is so small compared with the number that die in spite of it, that it is difficult even for the medical profession, much more so for the public, to become awake to the fact of its curability. No wonder surgeons chafe under this load of lethargy; no wonder the public is full of doubt and despair! Although it may be said that, practically speaking, formerly cancer was never cured, and although it can be easily shown that of late years it has been cured over and over again, we see almost everywhere the same pessimism as formerly prevailing with regard to it, the same obstacles to the achievement of the end we have in view. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Cancer, and Its Treatment After carefully considering all the circumstances, I determined to defer making the remedies and their method of application public, until such time as I should be recognised as the originator of them; and I am glad to say that I think this time has already come, and that I. Can now publish my plan; for the approbation of many medical gentlemen, and the gratitude of a multitude of cured patients have now placed it on such a broad basis of facts (and I hold that facts are everything in medicine), that it cannot well be either plagiarized, or the credit due to me disputed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cancer: Its Nature, Causes, Diagnosis and Treatment The views expressed in this volume are the results of the labors of a surgeon and a physiological chemist, working together for the past few years. The chemical work has been done by John A. Killian, ph.d., Patho logical Chemist at the House of Calvary for Cancer, and formerly Instructor in Physio logical Chemistry at Fordham University. No attempt has been made to settle definitely many of the questions arising in connection with this wide-spreading disease, but an effort has been made to show the lines along which future investigators probably must work. In addition, the result of the labors of the au thors is presented, both, as to methods of diagnosis which they have found useful, and as to principles and details of treatment, the carrying out of which may ameliorate some of the suffering and at least often retard fur ther progress for a considerable length of time. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Diagnosis and Treatment of Cancer and the Tumours Analogous to It I can but console myself in the knowledge that the profession possesses already a most complete manual of the subject in Walshe 'on the Nature and Treat ment of Cancer, ' and a most perfect system of its pathology in Mr. Paget's unrivalled lectures. The effort which I have made to combine in one volume, and to connect for the benefit of the practising surgeon, the results which their labours and those of others have produced on my mind, and such observations on both branches of the subject as I have been able to make, has taught me how extensive the field is, and how impossible it is for any one man to do more than till a very small portion of it. Do the results afford any hope that cancer is a preventable disease? The answer is distinctly in the affirmative. If the conclusions arrived at are true, cancer is not, as nearly all believe, an inevitable malady for many men and women, but is. Dependent on causes for the most part avoidable. Against cancer of the tongue, lips, and some other parts, there is almost certainly available at the present moment a perfect prophylaxis, and a partial prophy laxis against the same disease in the stomach, uterus, breast. Book The Aetiology Pathology Diagnosis and Treatment of Tumors Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-09-07 with total page 896 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aetiology, Pathology, Diagnosis and Treatment of Tumors In presenting this work to the medical profession I desire to state that my purpose has been to give the reader as clear a conception of the causation, origin, structure, diagnosis and treatment of tumors as possible. The importance of this subject can scarcely be over-estimated, and these pages repte 'sent all of my leisure time for the past four years. Barring the broad divisions of tumors into benign and malignant, they have been classified according to their histo logical structure, as it is my Opinion that tumors cannot be considered scientifically or to the best interests of the sur geon in accordance with the germ layers. It has been my intention in treating of the different genera to so associate the local origin, histology, pathology, and general characteristics of the growth as to make the diagnosis comparatively easy, for upon a correct diagnosis will rest a proper treatment. In the preparation of the work I have drawn from many treatises on embryology, histology, pathology and practice, and have endeavored to give proper credit for these extractions, but should I have failed in any particular instance it has been from oversight and not from intention. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cancer: Relief of Pain and Possible Cure WE give the following pages as a contribution to the treatment of the most difficult subject in medicine or surgery, not as a finished work. They comprise the result of nearly five years of experiment conducted on the same lines; and as we have in addition fifteen years of experi ment in other directions, we know many of the difliculties the experimenter has to face. We have tried to keep to facts and have entered into no theories, though originally we did try to work from them. To, avoid being too dis cursive we have not given all the cases we have treated, but have included all which appeared to give any information. The treatment is not suitable for all cases of cancer, and we hope that others will help us to discover which are the cases it is likely to cure and which should be attacked in some other way.
