It was a 27 year long "labor of love," and is a reference work as well as the story of a beautiful valley and a historical era. The index is extensive, as is the bibliography. John W. Cummins, the protagonist, victimized a number of people, and his detailed, insofar as seems possible, including extensive quotes from depositions taken in 1881, sealed with wax, and uncovered and opened for the first time by the author in 1988, confirming and filling out details of the author's story.
