It has not been deemed pertinent to this occasion that all the congregations which have at any time been connected with the Presbytery should be noticed here. Many of them have been dissolved, while others are now within the bounds of adjacent Presbyteries. With two excep" tions we notice only those which are now in active operation in our own territory. Lack of space forbids us to attempt even a reference to the minor details of their work, however interesting and important some of these may have been. The fields occupied by these congregations have been the scenes of conflicts and triumphs worthy of being remembered and studied by posterity; for in these humbler spheres the providence of God has developed a heroism not inferior to that which in other and more conspicuous walks has called forth the admiration of the world. But here we can do nothing more than embody a mere statement of historical facts, together with brief references to some of the men who have been conspicuous as leaders in their several congregations. WHITE RIVER CONGREGATION Is the youngest child of the Presbytery, it having been organized by Messrs. Mason Hedrick and W. B. Crawford in May, 1875, at the Union church, in Pike county, nine miles east of Petersburgh. The elders are W. H. Kelso, A. L. Case, Henry Stone and Jonas Robinson. It has about twenty-five members. CHANDLER CONGREGATION Was organized on the 10th of October, 1874, at Thorny Grove school-house, Warrick county, Indiana, by Rev. R. J. P. Lemmon, assisted by Messrs. W. J. Darby and A. F. Hutchinson. The membership was seventy, of whom thirty-three were from Newburgh congregation and a like number from Boonville. Some additions have been made, but the congregation has not enjoyed a...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Light on a people's forward path comes from behind - from the past. Because Cumberland Presbyterians are eager for illumination for their ongoing mission this set of books have been written. In ÒA People Called Cumberland PresbyteriansÓ three writers have endeavored to directly and effectively present the convictions, dedication and purpose that formed this Presbyterian denomination on the American frontier and have impelled it through more than 160 years to the present. The books illuminate some of the most distinctive traits of the church. Many persons and events come to life in it. Not only the better known heroes and heroines of the movement are presented, but also many of the lesser known who play colorful and significant roles, and details typical of the ongoing life of the church are here, along with accounts of the stirring hours of its history.

Book Interfaces Baptists and Others

Download or read book Interfaces Baptists and Others written by David Bebbington and published by Authentic Media Inc. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a collection of twenty-one essays discussing how Baptists throughout the world have related to other Christians and to other institutions and movements over the centuries. The theme of this collection of twenty-one essays, 'Baptists and Others', includes relations with other Christians and with other institutions and movements. What, the authors ask, has been the Baptist experience of engaging with different groups and developments? The theme has been explored by means of case studies, some of which are very specific in time and place while others cover long periods and more than one country. In the first half the contents are arranged by period. The first section examines early Baptists, the second nineteenth-century Baptists in Britain and America and the third Baptists in the twentieth century. The second half turns to various parts of the world. There is a section on Australia, another on New Zealand and a third on Asia and Africa. The overall picture is one of a complicated series of relationships as Baptists defined themselves as different from other bodies and yet, especially in the twentieth century, tried to co-operate in mission and ecumenical endeavour. 'Baptists are often regarded as enthusiastic separatists and unenthusiastic ecumenists. These essays, based on hard evidence rather than passing impressions, are a necessary correction to superficial prejudices and show the reality to be much more complex and nuanced, as well as varied over time and place. The book is a smorgasbord of delights. Yet, readers should avoid the temptation to pick and choose from the menu, ensuring rather that each offering is digested so they enjoy a balance and nutritious meal.' Derek Tidball
