Book Gravel Roads

Download or read book Gravel Roads written by Ken Skorseth and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.

Book Hydro Environmental Analysis

Download or read book Hydro Environmental Analysis written by James L. Martin and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-12-04 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on fundamental principles, Hydro-Environmental Analysis: Freshwater Environments presents in-depth information about freshwater environments and how they are influenced by regulation. It provides a holistic approach, exploring the factors that impact water quality and quantity, and the regulations, policy and management methods that are necessary to maintain this vital resource. It offers a historical viewpoint as well as an overview and foundation of the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics affecting the management of freshwater environments. The book concentrates on broad and general concepts, providing an interdisciplinary foundation. The author covers the methods of measurement and classification; chemical, physical, and biological characteristics; indicators of ecological health; and management and restoration. He also considers common indicators of environmental health; characteristics and operations of regulatory control structures; applicable laws and regulations; and restoration methods. The text delves into rivers and streams in the first half and lakes and reservoirs in the second half. Each section centers on the characteristics of those systems and methods of classification, and then moves on to discuss the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of each. In the section on lakes and reservoirs, it examines the characteristics and operations of regulatory structures, and presents the methods commonly used to assess the environmental health or integrity of these water bodies. It also introduces considerations for restoration, and presents two unique aquatic environments: wetlands and reservoir tailwaters. Written from an engineering perspective, the book is an ideal introduction to the aquatic and limnological sciences for students of environmental science, as well as students of environmental engineering. It also serves as a reference for engineers and scientists involved in the management, regulation, or restoration of freshwater environments.

Book Culvert Repair Best Practices Specifications and Special Provisions

Download or read book Culvert Repair Best Practices Specifications and Special Provisions written by Bruce D. Wagener and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document contains the results of Task D, Best Practices Guidelines for the Culvert Repair Best Practices, Specifications and Special Provisions Guidelines Project. These guidelines will provide guidance to Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) engineers in making better decisions on culvert repairs. New materials specifications, special provisions, and standard details will ensure adherence to standardized practices and increase the effectiveness and longevity of repairs. Focus is on repair of centerline culverts of 24 inches to 72 inches in diameter. This Task D document contains the best practices guidelines for replacement, rehabilitation and repair methods for deteriorating culverts. An overview of replacement methods is provided. Rehabilitation and repair methods are discussed in more detail. The methods discussed are the most common culvert rehabilitation and repair methods identified during governmental and industry surveys conducted during Tasks A and B. The final list for inclusion in this guideline was chosen by the authors and the Technical Advisory Panel (TAP). Special provisions and standard details were prepared for the following methods: paved invert, cured-in-place pipe liner (CIPP), sliplining culvert pipe, centrifugally cast concrete culvert lining, spall repair, joint repair, and void filling outside the culvert.

Book An Asset Management Approach for Drainage Infrastructure and Culverts

Download or read book An Asset Management Approach for Drainage Infrastructure and Culverts written by Mohammad Najafi and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drainage infrastructure systems (culvert, storm sewer, outfall and related drainage elements) are mostly buried underground and are in need of special attention in terms of proactive/preventive asset management strategy. Drainage infrastructure systems represent an integral portion of roadway assets that routinely require inspection, maintenance, repair and renewal. Further challenges are the wide geospatial distribution of these infrastructure assets and environmental exposure. There has been considerable research conducted on culverts, but mostly looked at the problem from a traditional structural/geotechnical perspective. Asset management procedures for culverts and drainage infrastructure systems are complex issues, and can benefit a great deal from an optimal asset management program that draws from programs pertaining to buried pipes. The first and most important step in an asset management initiative is the establishment of mechanism for asset inventory and asset conditions in a format compatible with the routine procedures of field operators and inspectors. The first objective of this research project was to develop field protocols and operational business rules for inventory data collection and management and inspection of drainage infrastructures in terms of types of data to be collected, frequency of inspection, and analysis and reporting mechanisms. After review of these protocols by the project oversight committee, a pilot study was conducted to verify efficiency of their implementation. The condition assessment protocol introduced is useful in evaluating the overall condition of culverts and can be used for decision making regarding the repair, renewal or replacement of culverts. For the second objective of this project, investigators examined the inventory and inspection protocols employed by Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and developed a decision support platform, which establishes a link between the inspection results and appropriate repair, renewal and replacement procedures. After applying the recommended procedures, the transportation agencies can better track the conditions of culverts thereby reducing the risks of culvert failures.

Book Service Life of Culverts

Download or read book Service Life of Culverts written by Michael L. J. Maher and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 474: Service Life of Culverts explores the time during which a culvert is expected to provide a desired function with a specified level of maintenance established at the design or retrofit stage. This study is an update of NCHRP Synthesis 254: Service Life of Drainage Pipe (1998), which itself was an update of NCHRP Synthesis 50: Durability of Drainage Pipe (1978). Developments in plastic pipe, fiber-reinforced concrete pipe, polymeric-coated metal pipe, recycled materials, larger and more diverse structures, and sophisticated analytical soil-structure interaction modeling within the past 15 years led to the development of this report." --
