Le texte de Christophe Charle s'attache à discuter la distinction interne/externe dans l'histoire du monde britannique. Pour ce faire, il a élaboré la notion de société impériale qui lui permet de repenser, dans une perspective constructiviste et polémiste, les notions d'Empire, de culture impériale, de stratégie de domination, et d' " identité britannique " (britishness). Les deux articles suivants se penchent sur le fait militaire dans des perspectives très différentes. Dans le premier, Christophe Wasinski, en s'appuyant sur les apports de la sociologie pragmatique et de l'anthropologie des sciences, se propose d'interroger la formation d'un régime d'expertise stratégique qui a contribué à faire de la guerre moderne une pratique sociale jugée techniquement faisable et, partant, légitime pour les militaires. Delphine Resteigne et Joseph Soeters s'attachent, quant à eux, à montrer combien les organisations militaires sont occupées à suivre la même voie d'internationalisation qui a touché les entreprises privées au cours des années 1990. A partir d'une approche pragmatique et différenciée de la culture militaire et d'une enquête empirique in situ, ils analysent différentes stratégies de coopération entre militaires étrangers. Book excerpt: Memory has taken centre stage in European-level policies after the Cold War, as the Western historical narrative based on the uniqueness of the Holocaust was being challenged by calls for an equal condemnation of Communism and Nazism. This book retraces the anti-communist mobilisations carried out by Central European representatives in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and in the European Parliament since the early 1990s. Based on archive consultation, interviews and ethnographic observation, it analyses the memory entrepreneurs’ requests for collective remembrance and legal accountability of Communist crimes in European institutions, Pan-European political parties and transnational advocacy networks. The book argues that these newcomers managed to strengthen their positions and impose a totalitarian interpretation of Communism in the European assemblies, which directly shaped the EU’s remembrance policy. However, the rules of the European political game and recurring ideological conflicts with left-wing opponents reduced the legal and judicial implications of this anti-communist grammar at the European level. This text will be of key interest to scholars and graduate students in memory studies, post-Communist politics and European studies, and more broadly in history, political science and sociology.

In most international comparisons, France typifies the "Napoleonic" model for policing, one featuring administrative and political centralization, a strong hierarchical structure, distance from local communities, and a high priority on political policing. France has undergone a process of pluralization in the last 30 years. French administrative and political decentralization has reemphasized the role of local authorities in public security policies; the private security industry has grown significantly; and new kinds of governing models (based on arrangements such as contracts for service provision) have emerged. In addition, during this period, police organizations have been driven toward central government control through the imposition of performance indicators, and a top-down decision was made to integrate the national gendarmerie into the Ministry of Interior. The book addresses how police legitimacy differs across socioeconomic, generational, territorial, and ethnic lines. An analysis of the policing of banlieues (deprived neighborhoods) illustrates the convergence of contradictory police goals, police violence, the concentration of poverty, and entrenched opposition to the states’ representatives, and questions policing strategies such as the use of identity checks.
