Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cultured Mexico, an Unknown Land to North Americans The author hopes those of the fashionable lit crary circles will be indulgent with him and the child of his mind for the crudeness manifested in his self-fashioned style and note the thought con tent rather than the form of expression. The Mexican question, like the Irish and American question, is first economic and, per accidens, religious and racial. Download or read book The American Indians North of Mexico Classic Reprint written by William Harvey Miner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Indians, North of Mexico In the second place, it is readily to he remarked that interest in the study, both cultural and descriptive, of this branch of the world's family, is, particularly in America, constantly increasing. As the original data disappear, so do new generations realise the value of What has passed, and every portion of history or folklore thus preserved and studied becomes to the highest degree valuable and interesting. Many Americans of to - day, especially those of the middle and far west, may be direct descendants of those hardy pioneers or frontiers men who were, but a few years since, either friends or foes of the original inhabitants of the lands they now occupy. These or like instances are, for the most part, well within the memory of the living, and this interest, already well advanced, will continually develop. Book Idea of a New General History of North America

Download or read book Idea of a New General History of North America written by Lorenzo Boturini Benaduci and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2015-11-03 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Spaniard originally from Italy, the polymath Lorenzo Boturini Benaduci (1702–1753), known as Boturini, traveled to New Spain in 1736. Becoming fascinated by the Mesoamerican cultures of the New World, he collected and copied native writings—and learned Nahuatl, the language in which most of these documents were written. Boturini’s incomparable collection—confiscated, neglected, and dispersed after the Spanish crown condemned his intellectual pursuits—became the basis of his Idea of a New General History of North America. The volume, completed in 1746 and written almost entirely from memory, is presented here in English for the first time, along with the Catálogo, Boturini’s annotated enumeration of the works he had gathered in New Spain. Stafford Poole’s lucid and nuanced translation of the Idea and Catálogo allows Anglophone readers to fully appreciate Boturini’s unique accomplishment and his unparalleled and sympathetic knowledge of the native peoples of eighteenth-century Mexico. Poole’s introduction puts Boturini’s feat of memory and scholarship into historical context: Boturini was documenting the knowledge and skills of native Americans whom most Europeans were doing their utmost to denigrate. Through extensive, thoughtful annotations, Poole clarifies Boturini’s references to Greco-Roman mythology, authors from classical antiquity, humanist works, ecclesiastical and legal sources, and terms in Nahuatl, Spanish, Latin, and Italian. In his notes to the Catálogo, he points readers to transcriptions and translations of the original materials in Boturini’s archive that exist today. Invaluable for the new light they shed on Mesoamerican language, knowledge, culture, and religious practices, the Idea of a New General History of North America and the Catálogo also offer a rare perspective on the intellectual practices and prejudices of the Bourbon era—and on one of the most curious and singular minds of the time.

This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Winter in Central America and Mexico The knights of old journeyed into distant lands to do deeds of chivalry; the knights of to-day, more practical though not less courageous, go searching for the North Pole, for gold, for knowl edge, for adventure; but who of them has gone into distant, uncivilized lands in search of coffee? Such was the errand of the two whose wanderings and observations are recorded in this little volume. The journey was undertaken by Mr. James S. Sanborn, of the firm of Chase and Sanborn, of this city, in the interest of the coffee business of that firm. The author went, as narrated in the first chapter, to be a companion to her father, and, as far as a limited knowledge permitted, to speak the Spanish language. On our return' home, notes of our travels were published in the New England Grocer, for the interest of the trade. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Indian Mexico: A Narrative of Travel and Labor The reading public may well ask, Why another travel book on Mexico? Few countries have been so frequently written up by the traveler. Many books, good, bad, and indifferent, but chiefly bad, have been perpetrated. Most of these books, however, cover the same ground, and ground which has been traversed by many people. Indian Mexico is practically unknown. The only travel-book regarding it, in English, is Lumholtz's Unknown Mexico. The indians among whom Lumholtz worked lived in northwestern Mexico; those among whom I have studied are in southern Mexico. The only district where his work and mine overlap is the Tarascan area. In fact, then, I write upon an almost unknown and untouched subject. Lumholtz studied life and customs; my study has been the physical type of south Mexican indians. Within the area covered by Lumholtz, the physical characteristics of the tribes have been studied by Hrdlicka. His studies and my own are practically the only investigations within the field. There are two Mexicos. Northern Mexico to the lati tude of the capital city is a mestizo country; the indians of pure blood within that area occupy limited and circum scribed regions. Southern Mexico is indian country; there are large regions, where the mestz'zos, not the indians, are the exception. From the time of my first contact with Mexican indians, I was impressed with the notable dif ferences between tribes, and desired to make a serious study of their types. In 1895, the accidental meeting with a priest from Guatemala led to my making a journey to Gen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John North in Mexico: A Story of the Silver City A city with walls shining like silver, with golden minarets and battlements of crystal, inhabited by a people with the manner and dress of their ancestors of a thousand years ago, and, unitedly, guarding a subterranean treasure-chamber holding more gold than the Spaniards took from the Incas of Peru! This was the luring phantom that had taken possession of John North, a New England boy nineteen years old, coast born and farm bred. It all came about from his reading that old book. No one knew how or when it came into the North farm garret; but everybody in the village of Selim knew that it was there, and that it had charmed and infatuated here a young man and there an old one for at least three generations. John North, when he came to reading days, found it there in company with the Voyages of Captain Cook, and kindred books. He had read it through at least once a year ever since he could remember; and he was far more familiar with the map of Yucatan than with any other in the atlas. It is more than ordinary attention that he is giving to the relation of the Spanish adventurer this October afternoon. By his side, as usual, is spread a map. He is tracing upon it (for the hundredth time) here a line of march, there the locality of some sharp skirmish, yonder the probable scene of death and defeat. Slowly and thoughtfully he turns page after page, collating, and constantly recurring to the map, picking up different points like an Indian on the trail of a foe. At last he seems to have found the object of his search; his finger circles around the figure of a lake in the centre of a region of forest, gradually approaches it, and finally is brought down with a triumphant thump. "That's it! the very place! Hurrah! I surely have found it this time!" "What have you found, my boy?" said a soft voice behind him; turning around, he saw his mother standing in the doorway. "Found! Why, that mysterious city we boys have always wondered about so much in reading this old book. Look, mother! here it is, here it must be, right in the midst of this great forest! Book Culture Across Borders

Download or read book Culture Across Borders written by David Maciel and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For as long as Mexicans have emigrated to the United States they have responded creatively to the challenges of making a new home. But although historical, sociological, and other aspects of Mexican immigration have been widely studied, its cultural and artistic manifestations have been largely overlooked by scholars—even though Mexico has produced the greatest number of cultural works inspired by the immigration process. And recently Chicana/o artists have addressed immigration as a central theme in their cultural productions and motifs. Culture across Borders is the first and only book-length study to analyze a wide range of cultural manifestations of the immigration experience, including art, literature, cinema, corridos, and humor. It shows how Mexican immigrants have been depicted in popular culture both in Mexico and the United States—and how Mexican and Chicano/Chicana artists, intellectuals, and others have used artistic means to protest the unjust treatment of immigrants by U.S. authorities. Established and upcoming scholars from both sides of the border contribute their expertise in art history, literary criticism, history, cultural studies, and other fields, capturing the many facets of the immigrant experience in popular culture. Topics include the difference between Chicano/a and Mexican representation of immigration; how films dealing with immigrants are treated differently by Mexican, Chicano, and Hollywood producers; the rich literary and artistic production on immigration themes; and the significance of immigration in Chicano jokes. As a first step in addressing the cultural dimensions of Mexican immigration to the United States, this book captures how the immigration process has inspired powerful creative responses on both sides of the border.
