Book Culture and Society in France 1789 1848

Download or read book Culture and Society in France 1789 1848 written by F. W. J. Hemmings and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-09-28 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1987, complements the author's earlier volume on Culture and Society in France 1848-1898. It deals with the interaction of social history and cultural history, covering in succession the Revolutionary period, the Napoleonic Empire, the Restoration and the July Monarchy. The scope of the book embraces literature (the drama, poetry and the novel), the art of the Revolution and of Romanticism, and to a lesser extent music (including the opera), sculpture and architecture. Influential figures such as Jacques-Louis David, Stendhal, Berlioz, Victor Hugo and others have their place in the survey, together with others prominent in their time hut less well known today. Attention is drawn to phenomena such as the rise of the commercial theatre, and the assembling under Napoleon's aegis of the first public art gallery in Europe, the Musée du Louvre. The survey brings together all the disparate strands to present a coherent picture of the cultural life of France as it evolved during the sixty momentous years between the French Revolution and the upheaval of 1848.

Book excerpt: "In this interpretation of the French Revolution, Professor Hunt argues that it gave birth to many essential characteristics of modern politics -- in particular, it marks the discovery of the potential of political action to consciously transform society by molding character, culture, and social relations. The author emphasizes the dynamic interaction between the socio-cultural and political, between the unconscious structures of symbolic forms and the collective actions of committed politicians."--Back cover

Book Age Of Revolution 1789 1848

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first in Eric Hobsbawm's dazzling trilogy on the history of the nineteenth century. Between 1789 and 1848 the world was transformed both by the French Revolution and also by the Industrial Revolution that originated in Britain. This 'Dual Revolution' created the modern world as we know it. Eric Hobsbawm traces with brilliant analytical clarity the transformation brought about in every sphere of European life by the Dual Revolution - in the conduct of war and diplomacy; in new industrial areas and on the land; among peasantry, bourgeoisie and aristocracy; in methods of government and of revolution; in science, philosophy and religion; in literature and the arts. But above all he sees this as the period when industrial capitalism established the domination over the rest of the world it was to hold for a century. Eric Hobsbawm's enthralling and original account is an impassioned but objective history of the most significant sixty years in the history of Europe.
