Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culture and Religion in Some of Their Relations It need hardly be said that no attempt is here made at systematic, much less at ex haustive, treatment of the subject. To have aimed at this Within the space and in the form to which I have restricted myself, would have been impossible. All I have wished to do is to set forth certain views, which seem to me true in themselves, and yet likely to be passed over too lightly, or set aside too summarily, by the intellectual temper of the time. No satisfactory adjust ment of the questions here entertained can, I believe, be reached without assigning to the spiritual side of man's being and of truth a prominence and an importance, which do not seem to have entered into the thoughts of some of the ablest advocates of Culture. Indeed, to many, and these not the most fool ish of mankind, Culture seems then only to be worthy of serious regard when it minis ters to faith, - when it enables men to see spiritual things more truly and deeply. If it obstructs or dims the vision of these things. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relations Between Culture and Religion: Three Lectures Two different extremes then of Opinion prevail respecting this thing, whatever it is, called culture: there are the enthusiastic admirers and the scorn ful despisers those who think that it is destined to do the greatest good, and those who think that it is calculated to do the greatest mischief. This is what commonly happens when anything, be it a fresh discovery in science or a new style in art, is brought into great public prominence, or when circumstances render some person tne most conspicuous public Character of the day. It or he is extolled to the skies with praise by some, is beaten down to the dust of the earth and trampled under foot by the contumely and scorn of others. Truth commonly lies in the mean between these two extremes. For a long time passion and prejudice, and the smoke Of controversy hide the truth, but in time as the combatants cool it begins. To emerge. My aim in the present lectures is to try and get at the truth respecting what is called culture. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culture and Religion in Some of Their Relations This little book is a small subject contribution to a great subject. The five Lectures which it contains were delivered, on five successive Saturday's of last Winter Session, to as many of the Students of the United College and others as chose to attend. They were originally written with a view solely to immediate delivery. The publication of them is an afterthought. It is needless to explain my reasons for publishing them, for these could neither increase nor diminish their value, whatever that may be. One object, however, which I hope may be gained by publication is to place them in a permanent form before those for whom they were originally intended. As lecturers, meant to be understood on first hearing, they are naturally in a style more popular and diffuse than might have beseemed a regular treatise. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oriental Religions: And Their Relation to Universal Religion Nor has there been wanting a somewhat discredit able form of Special pleading, for the purpose of reducing the claims of heathenism to the smallest pos sible amount; a grudging literalism, a strict construe tion, or a base rendering, of ancient beliefs; which would prove every apparent spiritual perception a phantom of fancy or blind hope, or else a mirage reflected from the idealism of the present on the back ground of the past. Resolving the fair imaginations and delicate divinations of the childlike races into mockery betrays, however, far more scepticism in the critic than in the race he wrongs. The same disposition has Often arisen from philosophical prej udice. Thus the desire of Locke to disprove the notion of innate ideas led him to a degree of unbelief in this direction, which has had noticeable effect on subsequent thought. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible and Babylon: Their Relationship in the History of Culture Against the hasty acceptance of a line of thought which has of late been vehemently urged in Germany, and has found too much countenance among some scholars in this country. The decipherment of the cuneiform inscriptions has not only revealed a good many resemblances in the Babylonian records to some of the opening passages of the Hebrew Scriptures, but has shown that the civiliza tion of Babylonia was in many respects similar to that which is presupposed in the early narratives of the Old Testament. It is clear among other things, from the nature of the recently deciphered Code of Hammurabi, who was probably a contemporary of Abraham, that the Mosaic Code was analogous, in general character, to a system of legislation long ante cedent to it. The inspiration of the Divine lawgiver was exerted, in fact, not in creating. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dynamics of Religion, an Essay in English Culture History Of course there is a confusion of consciousness in the matter. Men fighting for their own interests under the, guise of abstract truth and righteousness do not as a rule regard themselves as deceiving anybody. And it is a superficial view of the quasi sincerity of their state of mind that has led our amateur psychologists, the sentimental historians and essayists, to set up their facile kingdoms of sheep and goats, sincere people and insincere. This book was released on 2017-01-09 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Family Religion, or the Domestic Relations as Regulated by Christian Principles Such was the foundation Of the Family constitution. It was the first social organization, the germ and the pattern of all others. Adam and Eve constituted a fa mily, and were thus constituted by God. As yet, there could be no civil government, no municipal laws, no magistrates and governors, and no provision for the ex ercise of any political power, for there were no subjects. Nor could there as yet exist an organized church, involv ing the idea of a ministry, the administration of sacra ments, and the existence and Operation of a government. Nor could there be any artificial educational institutions such as schools, academies, or other systems of instruo tion. Our first parents found within the limits of the family constitution, the essential means for securing to themselves and to their children, the benefits and advan tages of government, school, and church. Download or read book Religion and To Day Classic Reprint written by Jonathan Brierley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-12 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion and to-Day We are beginning to realise personality as the soul of things, as the one reason for things. Religion has reached us through the great personalities. Christ ianity is a religion of personalities; and it holds its place as having in its Founder the deepest rooted of all the souls we know the one whose character, teachings, and work reach farthest and highest, our divinest symbol as Carlyle has it, the in carnation of all that is to us dearest and holiest. But Christianity to-day does not stand as denying or excluding the Divine culture of man outside its immediate range. It stands rather as fulfilling and completing it. Its relation to other religions has never been better expressed than in the words of the late M. Sabatier, of Paris. The Christian conscious ness is not merely an accidental form or part of the general religious consciousness. It is with the final term of this ideal as with the summit of a mountain. The summit is a part of the mountain, but it domin ates all the other parts, in their ascending stage from the depths of the valley up to itself; and by that fact it embraces them all and assigns to each its place and rank in the whole. Book Authentic Fakes

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Chidester
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2005-04-18

Download or read book Authentic Fakes written by David Chidester and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2005-04-18 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authentic Fakes explores the religious dimensions of American popular culture in unexpected places: baseball, the Human Genome Project, Coca-Cola, rock 'n' roll, the rhetoric of Ronald Reagan, the charisma of Jim Jones, Tupperware, and the free market, to name a few. Chidester travels through the cultural landscape and discovers the role that fakery—in the guise of frauds, charlatans, inventions, and simulations—plays in creating religious experience. His book is at once an incisive analysis of the relationship between religion and popular culture and a celebration of the myriad ways in which invention can stimulate the religious imagination. Moving beyond American borders, Chidester considers the religion of McDonald’s and Disney, the discourse of W.E.B. Du Bois and the American movement in Southern Africa, the messianic promise of Nelson Mandela’s 1990 tour to America, and more. He also looks at the creative possibilities of the Internet in such phenomena as Discordianism, the Holy Order of the Cheeseburger, and a range of similar inventions. Arguing throughout that religious fakes can do authentic religious work, and that American popular culture is the space of that creative labor, Chidester looks toward a future "pregnant with the possibilities of new kinds of authenticity."
