Book Early Buddhist Art of China and Central Asia Volume 2 The Eastern Chin and Sixteen Kingdoms Period in China and Tumshuk Kucha and Karashahr in Central Asia 2 vols

Download or read book Early Buddhist Art of China and Central Asia Volume 2 The Eastern Chin and Sixteen Kingdoms Period in China and Tumshuk Kucha and Karashahr in Central Asia 2 vols written by Marylin Martin Rhie and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-07-15 with total page 1635 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume two of Marylin Rhie’s widely acclaimed and formative multi-volume work presents a comprehensive, scholarly and detailed study of the Buddhist art of China and Central Asia from 316-439 A.D. during the formative early periods of Buddhism in the Eastern Chin and Sixteen Kingdoms Period. Using texts translated from the Chinese together with stylistic and technical analyses, the chronology and sources of the art are more clearly defined than in previous studies for the regions of South and North China (other than Kansu) and the important sites of Tumshuk, Kucha and Karashahr on the Northern Silk Route in eastern Central Asia. Furthermore, by incorporating extensive religious and historical materials, this work not only contributes to clarifying the regional characteristics of the art, but also offers new insights into the broader, interregional relationships of this politically fragmented period.

Book Korean Buddhist Sculpture

Download or read book Korean Buddhist Sculpture written by Chin Hongsup and published by Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. This book was released on 2023-12-15 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a translation of the classic primer of the study of the Korean art history that organizes the features of the Buddhist images in terms of time period. Chin Hongsup 秦弘燮 (1918–2010) worked for National Museum of Korea and Bureau of Cultural Property. He also served as a professor at Ewha Womans University and head of its museum. He was one of the noted earlier experts in the field of art history in Korea, also serving the Cultural Heritage Committee at Cultural Heritage Administration. He wrote the Han’guk ui bulsang (Korean Buddhist Sculpture, 1976), the Han’guk ui seokjo misul (Stone Art of Korean, 1995), and the Han’guk Bulgyo misul (Korean Buddhist Art, 1998). He also compiled the Han’guk misulsa jaryo jipseong (Compilation of Primary Sources in Korean Art History, 1987–2003) 9 volumes. This book, a monumental work of Korean Buddhist sculpture, consists of three parts. Part 1, “The Concept of the Buddhist Image,” discusses the types, origin, and form of the Buddhist images. Part 2, “Korean Buddhist Images,” illustrates the styles of Korean Buddhist sculpture, after introducing the transmission of Buddhism and Buddhist sculpture to Korea. Part 3, “Korean Buddhist Sculptures,” explores the features of the Buddhist sculpture in terms of time period, examining diverse examples of the periods of Three Kingdoms, Unified Silla, Goryeo, and Joseon. This book has corrected some of the dates of making with recent research outcomes and replaced black and white photos with color photos.

Book Korean Thought and Culture

Download or read book Korean Thought and Culture written by Chai-Shin Yu and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During its five thousand years of history and culture, Korea has been attacked and invaded by other countries eight hundred times. Despite all its past tragedies, Korea has risen from the ashes and become one of the ten strongest economic countries in the world-all because its people have kept their thoughts, culture, and roots alive. In Korean Thought and Culture: A New Introduction, Dr. Chai-Shin Yu shares the results of his extensive research. He offers careful interpretation of historical facts and in-depth exploration of past events, while determining whether Old-Korean thought culture has always existed independently or arose initially through the sole influence of China. A seasoned lecturer on Korean culture and thought, Dr. Yu relies on his professional experience to provide a comprehensive study of Korean and East Asian thought and culture, the influence of Korea on Japanese culture, Korean philosophers, and other Asian and Christian thoughts and cultures. One hundred years since the Japanese invasion and sixty years after the attack of North Korea, Korean Thought and Culture: A New Introduction offers a new perspective on long-held beliefs and challenges anyone to take a new look at Korean thought and the history and culture of this fascinating country.
