Book excerpt: This qualitative case study examined how the intersection of gender, ethnicity, and college experiences affected five Latina undergraduate students' academic persistence in a predominately White, Research Extensive Midwestern State University. Latinas' gender, race, ethnicity, and college experiences influence their educational achievements directly. Because most research concentrates on understanding Latinas' educational experiences from a cultural deficit perspective, this research addressed the need to investigate Latinas' personal understanding of the challenges they face in college and their responses and coping strategies utilized to navigate their experiences and persist academically. Cultural Congruity was the theoretical framework for analysis and interpretation in this study because it contextualized the understanding of Latinas' culture of origin and its values in relation to the cultural values upheld by the university Latinas attend. The research utilized life narratives to understand the meaning the participants gave to their college experiences. Life narratives invent, reform, and refashion personal and collective identity for underrepresented people. Life narratives provided direct access to accounts of participants' lived experiences while identifying the ideologies and beliefs shaped by those experiences. The findings in this study identified the stereotypes, racism, obstacles, and support encountered by Latinas in college and at home. Further findings include: Impact and relevance that caring relationships and high expectations had on their academic persistence, Latinas' determination to be involved in college and give back to their parents and communities, and how academic effectiveness acted as a form of resistance for Latinas' college persistence. Four additional themes emerged: How self-efficacy was used by Latinas to redefine themselves in college, the changing effect that intellectually stimulating courses had on Latinas in college, their tenacity to succeed, and Latinas' identification of their fathers as feminist role models. Recommendations for practice and future research are addressed. The results contribute to the limited research on Latinas' persistence in higher education and the personal meaning that they give to the obstacles and support they encounter in college. Further, the findings defy the stereotypes attributed frequently to Latinas.

The 2000 census revealed that Hispanics already slightly outnumber African Americans as the largest ethnic group, while together Blacks and Hispanics constitute the majority population in the five largest U.S. cities. Given these facts, black-brown relations could be a more significant racial issue in the decades to come than relations between minority groups and Whites. Offering some of the first in-depth analyses of how African Americans and Hispanics perceive and interact with each other, this pathfinding study looks at black-brown relations in Houston, Texas, one of the largest U.S. cities with a majority ethnic population and one in which Hispanics outnumber African Americans. Drawing on the results of several sociological studies, the authors focus on four key issues: how each group forms and maintains stereotypes of the other, areas in which the two groups conflict and disagree, the crucial role of women in shaping their communities' racial attitudes, and areas in which Hispanics and African Americans agree and can cooperate to achieve greater political power and social justice.

Book excerpt: Women of color, particularly African-Americans and Hispanics, have a science and engineering degree attainment rate of 11% whereas White women have a rate of 29%. Research has demonstrated that these underrepresented minorities experience various racial/ethnic and gender issues that impact their academic success in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields. Most of this research was conducted within the context of predominantly White institutions. However, community colleges enroll a disproportionately high number of women of color, and less than half of these students earn a degree within six years. The purpose of this qualitative, case study was to explore the perceptions of women of color in science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs about their racial/ethnic and gender experiences while attending community colleges, and how these perceptions affected their success in these programs. Data were collected through face-to-face semi-structured interviews and a focus group discussion with a participant group of six Hispanic women in their second year at a purposely selected college located in a large Midwestern community college system. Face-toface interviews were also conducted with two faculty members, and archival data was examined. Data were transcribed, imported, and analyzed using a qualitative data analysis software program for thematic coding. Findings revealed that women of color (Hispanic) students in a STEM program at a community college encountered experiences, including gender stereotypes, nonacademic responsibilities, and organizational relationships, that influenced the perceptions they formed, which in turn impacted their level of motivation and decisions to persist to course/program completion. However, these women had no racial/ethnic experiences that impacted their educational persistence; this they attributed to the institution’s culture and climate which embraced and regularly celebrated its diverse student body. These women of color formed perceptions of the negative gender stereotype experiences they encountered, usually at the hand of male classmates and male and female faculty, however, their perceptions revealed a rejection of such stereotypes and encouraged an increased STEM identity. Future research should consist of statistical analyses to determine the prevalence of campus cultures and climates that have diversity awareness practices that result in the absence of negative racial/ethnic experiences for female minority students.

These stereotypes include violent, criminal and vile behavior while wearing a wide-brimmed sombrero with a bottle of tequila in hand. Why do they exist? What are the reasons for this? Berg argues that one prominent source for the dominant stereotype of Chicanos is the media, primarily the globally dominant U.S. media, and specifically - though not exclusively - Hollywood movies. According to the psychologist Yueh-Ting Lee, "stereotypes are probabilistic belief [which we] use to categorize people, objects, and events and we have to have them in order to deal with all the information in a world with which we are often uncertain as well as unfamiliar." A dangerous character is ascribed to stereotypes when we consider Bower's statement that stereotyping can be seen as a "breeding soil for errant generalizations about others that easily [merge] into racism, sexism, and other forms of bigotry." Since a complete presentation of the existing stereotypes would stretch the point, I will focus on the most popular stereotypes ascribed to Chicanos. Furthermore, the origin of these negative stereotypes towards this minority will be analysed. In order to explore this, I will place emphasis on stereotypes in American news, movies and in advertisement. Last but not least, I will talk about multicultural picture books and stereotypes therein. In the first part of this term paper, I will talk about blurred coverage in American news. Syque states that in creating stereotypes "we often mistakenly assume things are correlated when they are not; when we make this mistake, we will find ways to 'prove' it or simply believe and assert the correlation
