Download or read book Cultural Resources Survey of Public Use Areas at Wilson Lake Kansas written by Don D. Rowlison and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An archeological sample survey of four Public Use Areas of Wilson lake in north central Kansas was conducted in October 1979. More than 15% of the designated areas were investigated during a pedestrian survey which was complemented by limited subsurface testing. Three sites were recorded; a mound of probable aboriginal construction; the remnants of a historic structure; and an area where paleontological remains were recovered. The survey indicated that the potential for archeological sites is greater nearer, the Saline river, than in the areas surveyed. Originator-supplied keywords include: Saline River, Russell and Lincoln Counties, Dissected High Plains, and Smokey Hills.

Book A Survey and Assessment of the Cultural Resources at Kaw Lake Northern Section Kansas

Download or read book A Survey and Assessment of the Cultural Resources at Kaw Lake Northern Section Kansas written by Arthur H. Rohn and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers required a complete inventory and assessment of cultural resources on lands administered by the Tulsa District office around the northern end of Kaw Lake in southern Cowley County, Kansas. Intensive field survey recorded 53 archaeological sites on federal property and 20 additional ones on lands immediately adjacent. Three major geographical concentrations of sites may reflect sizeable prehistoric settlements (communities) of at least three distinct cultural affiliations. A large settlement of protohistoric Great Bend peoples clustered along the lower Walnut River near Arkansas City with minor outlying sites to the east. Late Woodland settlements seem to have existed on the south bluffs of the Arkansas River and in the lower Grouse Creek Valley. A very large Middle Woodland settlement seems to have preceded the later one in the lower Grouse Creek Valley. Two sites along Grouse Creek contain undisturbed stratified materials belonging to several Woodland components. Seven U.S.A.C.E. owned sites appear to meet eligibility criteria for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places while nine others should qualify for the Register of Historic Kansas Places. No historic buildings or sites were recorded. (Author).

The data has been compiled on 86 prehistoric and 75 historic sites, as well as the pre-1947 bridging. The settlement patterns have been delineated especially for the Archaic to the Great Bend Aspect Components and that data was compared to similar data gathered in the Smithville Lake Area of Northwestern Missouri. Finally, recommendations for the future protection of these resources are presented. (Author).

Book Cultural Resources Literature Review and Reconnaissance Stranger and Tonganoxie Creeks Kansas

Download or read book Cultural Resources Literature Review and Reconnaissance Stranger and Tonganoxie Creeks Kansas written by Michael J. McNerney and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A literature and records search and reconnaissance level investigation for cultural resources in four selected areas along portions of Stranger and Tonganoxie Creeks is presented. The study area is within Atchison and Leavenworth Counties, Kansas, and is limited to an area a half mile in width on each side of the creeks. The four reconnaissance areas include 403 acres. Eighteen archaeological sites were identified; none are within the reconnaissance areas. A total of twenty-five architectural/structural sites is reported, including three urban zones of potential significance, eight individual buildings, two farmsteads, eleven bridges, and one highway. A literature and records review did not reveal National Register properties within the study area. An intensive survey of areas having higher elevations along Stranger and Tonganoxie Creeks and which may be impacted is recommended. A survey and assessment of the Linwood, Tonganoxie and Easton zones of potential significance which would be impacted is recommended. Documentation of the farmsteads in the Highway 92 reconnaissance area for inclusion in the Kansas Statewide Historic Inventory is recommended. Other structures outside the reconnaissance area which may be impacted should be surveyed and assessed. (Author).
