Book Cultural Resources Investigation of Three Archaeological Sites Along the Roseau Flood Control Project Roseau County Minnesota

Download or read book Cultural Resources Investigation of Three Archaeological Sites Along the Roseau Flood Control Project Roseau County Minnesota written by R. A. Ketcherside and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phase I cultural resources inventory was conducted in the summer of 1973 by UND. In 1977 the University of Minnesota cnducted a follow-up investigation of the area to be affected by the Roseau River modifications. In the second study a prehistoric occupation site (Vistad) was given a second legal location, an additional site (Ojibwa cemetery) was discussed, and two additional burial mounds were recorded in the Olson Mound Group. University of North Dakota Archaeological Research (UNDAR) aspired to locate, identify, and map the three sites discussed in the 1977 Minnesota report with the following results: 1) the Ojibwa cemetery was located and plotted on the Corps map in relation to the proposed modificaton of the Roseau River; 2) only two mounds in the Olson Mound Group could be located and mapped and these are believed to be the remains of historic structures; and 3) the Vistad site was located and considered to be ineligible for nomination to the National Register. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has modified channelization plans of the Roseau River to avoid the Ojibwa cemetery and the Olson Mound Group. Avoidance of the Vistad site is not necessary.

Book Archaeological and Historic Cultural Resources Inventory for a Flood Control Project at Halstad Norman County Minnesota

Download or read book Archaeological and Historic Cultural Resources Inventory for a Flood Control Project at Halstad Norman County Minnesota written by James C. Dahlberg and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A cultural resources inventory of proposed flood control right-of-way lines and areas at Halstad, Minnesota was conducted in 1981. One previously recorded prehistoric site, Riverside, is located within the existing levee right-of-way line. Four previously unrecorded historic sites were located, and of these, three (South Cemetery, Homestead, and Log Building) are within the proposed right-of-way lines. Recommendations include: 1) modify flood control plans to avoid all cultural resource sites within the right-of-way 2) avoid the South Cemetery by implementing a bypass and 3) conduct further cultural resource research at any site that cannot be avoided. Download or read book The Cultural Resources Investigation of the Wild Rice River South Branch and Felton Ditch Flood Control Project Area Clay and Norman Counties Minnesota written by Kathleen A. Roetzel and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal was to locate, identify, and evaluate historical and prehistoric cultural resources within the project area and to make specific recommendations as to the potential need for further testing. A thorough and comprehensive literature search and records check was conducted at the Office of the State Archaeologist, State Historic Preservation Office, Moorhead State University, Norman County Historical Society, Clay County Historical Society, Norman and Clay County Soil Conservation Service as well as the Mankato State University Library. Additionally, several interviews were conducted with professional archaeologists knowledgeable of the project, county historical society and Soil Conservation Service personnel, local collectors and several landowners. Ground surface reconnaissance was conducted at a 15 meter interval on the 100' corridor of the 65.5 linear miles included in the project. Also, 104 subsurface shovel tests were placed in areas (1) where the ground cover did not allow for adequate visual examination; (2) which had a high potential for site location; and (3) as a verification of the surface reconnaissance results. No cultural material was recovered as a result of either the ground surface reconnaissance or the shovel testing. Based upon these results, no significant cultural resource will be altered, damaged, or destroyed as a result of proposed construction activities.

Book Cultural Resources Literature and Records Search Flood Control Project Area Redwood River at Marshall Minnesota

Download or read book Cultural Resources Literature and Records Search Flood Control Project Area Redwood River at Marshall Minnesota written by Jeanne Schaaf and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This literature and records search was conducted to determine if known historic and/or prehistoric sites within the flood control project area at the Redwood River between river miles 64.7 and 72.6, exist and to estimate the potential of additional sites. The literature and records searched indicated no recorded prehistoric sites in the project area; however, archaeological survey and testing program should be conducted because of the extremely high site potential along the Redwood River. The only recorded historic building in the project area, the Lyon County Court House in Marshall, will not be affected by the proposed action. (Author).

Book Cultural Resource Investigation of Lands Affected by a Flood Control Project at Chaska Minnesota Along the Minnesota River

Download or read book Cultural Resource Investigation of Lands Affected by a Flood Control Project at Chaska Minnesota Along the Minnesota River written by Elden Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A literature search, records review, and reconnaissance or Phase I field survey was conducted by a University of Minnesota research team in the area of a proposed flood project in Chaska, Minnesota, on the lower Minnesota River. The literature search and records review included the entire Chaska area and its environs and while that search did not disclose any prehistoric or historic sites or places in the specific project area surveyed here, it did produce a number of potential and actual National Register sites and places in Chaska according to the records of the State Prehistoric Office in September 1980. The comprehensive literature search and records review done here should be adequate for any additional Phase I field testing on other segments of the Chaska flood control project. The field testing was confined to the West Chaska Creek diversion, the portion of Alternate 2 lying at an elevation above the river flood plain, and the portion of Alternate 3 lying at an elevation above the river flood plain. Field testing consisted of a visual surface examination of the three right-of-ways followed by shovel testing of right-of-way segments not already impacted and where land owner permission was obtained. The field shovel testing was negative. No prehistoric materials were located in the test areas. No further work is recommended for the project areas covered in this report.

Book Archaeological Testing and Survey

Download or read book Archaeological Testing and Survey written by Kent N. Good and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This cultural resource survey is of lands to be affected by the proposed Burlington Flood Control Project. The study area is located in north-central North Dakota along the Souris River from approximately two mile north of Burlington to the Canadian border. Survey of the area produced 48 archaeological localities including 18 tipi ring or stone circle sites and 30 occupation sites. Analysis of the cultural remains and other archaeological features indicates Plains Archaic, Plains Woodland, and Plains Nomadic manifestations. Further testing was done at the Herzig site, Washek site and Big Critter site. These sites are in immediate danger of distruction by the Des Lacs Diversion Tunnel outfall, construction and borrow area activities, respectively. Only the Washek site producted an array of cultural materials including lithic tools and debitage, fire-cracked rock, and fragmented and identifiable bone, indicating the site was a specialized area for meat processing. Recommendations for mitigation are offered as well as National Register eligibility evaluations. (Author).
