This book was released on 1982 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September of 1980, Iroquois Research Institute conducted an archeological survey of three levee and revetment items on the Mississippi River in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. Two historic sites were discovered. One consisted of an inlet and possible fragmentary wharf located in the Bohemia Revetment. At the Harlem Levee Setback, brick scatters, in situ brick remains, and a large standing house were identified within the project right-of-way. The remains at the Harlem Setback are probably associated with the Old Harlem Plantation and are potentially significant to local and regional history and to historic archeology. (Author).

This book was released on 1997 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document presents the background research, field investigation and findings from a cultural resources study of 16PL49, 16PL62, 16PL63, 16PL123 and 16PL130 at the South Pass of the Mississippi River. The work was conducted for the New Orleans District Corps of Engineers to identity and evaluate cultural resources in the proposed Corps dredge material disposal areas. Overall, survey was carried out over 943 terrestrial acres. A marine survey was also undertaken to identify anomalies that may represent potentially significant underwater cultural resources. The marine investigations found evidence of wells, possible shipwrecks, possible remains of the outer east jetty. possible remains associated with the Pilot Station and unknown magnetic anomalies. The integrity of these finds could not be evaluated at this stage. The Port Eads community was established when the government contracted with James B. Eads to construct jetties at South Pass to increase navigability of the Mississippi River from the Gulf of Mexico to the port of New Orleans. 16PL49 and 16PL62 are remains from historic Port Eads, a nineteenth and early twentieth century community. 16PL63 consists of five sets of pilings. Four of these are presumed to be associated with World War II gun emplacements, whereas the filth appears to have been associated with a structure that was destroyed sometime before 1961. 16PL123 is the former location of the Bar Pilots' House and Coast Guard station; both structures are no longer extant. 16PL130 consists of the remains of Eads' jetties as well as later modifications to the historic jetties. 16PL49, 16PL62 and 16PL130 represent the historic occupation of Port Eads and the engineering achievement of the jetties.

Book Cultural Resources Investigations of Three Borrow Areas New Orleans to Venice Hurricane Protection Project Plaquemines Parish Louisiana

Download or read book Cultural Resources Investigations of Three Borrow Areas New Orleans to Venice Hurricane Protection Project Plaquemines Parish Louisiana written by R. C. Goodwin and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During June 1989, R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc. conducted archeological investigations at three proposed borrow pit areas near Port Sulphur, in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. This survey was performed for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District, pursuant to Delivery Order 07, Contract No. DACW29-88-D-0121. The survey was comprised of an intensive pedestrian survey augmented by systematically placed, screened shovel tests. Two archeological sites were identified and tested. The Slater Site VH-1 (16PL151) consisted of a scatter of late nineteenth and twentieth century domestic and architectural debris. Shovel and auger tests and two excavation units yielded a variety of artifacts; all were recovered from the plowzone. There was no evidence of in situ features or cultural deposits. The Slater Site VH-2 (16PL152) contained late nineteenth through late twentieth century debris mixed in the plowzone. The debris appeared to be the remains of a shotgun house razed in the 1970s. Both sites lacked archeological integrity and substantive research potential. No further work was recommended for these two sites or within the three borrow pit areas. Book Cultural Resources Survey of Three Mississippi River Levee Setbacks and Borrows

Download or read book Cultural Resources Survey of Three Mississippi River Levee Setbacks and Borrows written by Adam G. Garson and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June of 1981, Iroquois Research Institute performed a cultural resources survey of three Mississippi River Levee Setback and Borrow items in Plaquemines Parishes and St. Bernard Parishes, Louisiana. The project included a prehistoric and historic background study and literature search, a geomorphological analysis of the survey items, and a systematic archeological survey. Intensive historic research aimed at determining the location of Fort St. Mary at English Turn in Plaquemines Parish was also performed. A total of 19 historic sites were inventoried during the survey. They included 18 residential, commercial, and religious buildings and the possible archeological remains of one plantation house. Recommendations for further study were made for the Palazzo Grocery Store at Linwood and for St. Luke's Baptist Church at Scarsdale-Stella. A feasibility study was recommended for making part of Arabi, including the area to be adversely affected by the levee setback, an historic district. The effect of an historic district would be to preserve historic archeological remains and the integrity of the many 19th and early 20th century structures existing in the area. The results of the historic study of Fort St. Mary indicated that there would be only a slight possibility that borrowing by the Corps of Engineers would adversely affect the remains of the fort. Its present location appears to be on the landward side of the levee below Shingle Point. (Author).

Book Cultural Resources Investigations of the Citrus Lands Area New Orleans to Venice Hurricane Protection Project Plaquemines Parish Louisiana

Download or read book Cultural Resources Investigations of the Citrus Lands Area New Orleans to Venice Hurricane Protection Project Plaquemines Parish Louisiana written by R. C. Goodwin and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During April and May 1990 archeological investigations were conducted at the proposed Citrus Lands borrow area near West Point a la Hache, in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. No archeological remains were encountered within the planned project area. However, one previously unrecorded site, 16PL153, was encountered outside the limits of the proposed borrow pit. This site probably represents the remains of a field drainage structure. No further work is recommended for the project area. Site 16PL153 will require additional testing, if future plans will result in impact to or destruction of the site complex.
