Book Sounding Out Heritage

Download or read book Sounding Out Heritage written by Lauren Meeker and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2013-09-30 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sounding Out Heritage explores the cultural politics that have shaped the recent history and practice of a unique style of folk song that originated in Bắc Ninh province, northern Vietnam. The book delves into the rich and complicated history of quan họ, showing the changes it has undergone over the last sixty years as it moved from village practice onto the professional stage. Interweaving an examination of folk music, cultural nationalism, and cultural heritage with an in-depth ethnographic account of the changing social practice of quan ho folk song, author Lauren Meeker presents a vivid and historically contextualized picture of the quan họ “soundscape.” Village practitioners, ordinary people who love to sing quan họ, must now negotiate increased attention from those outside the village and their own designation as “living treasures.” Professional singers, with their different performance styles and representational practices, have been incorporated into the quan họ soundscape in an effort to highlight and popularize the culture of Bắc Ninh province in the national context. With its focus on the politics of rescuing, preserving, and performing folk music, this book makes a timely contribution to studies of cultural politics by showing with considerable nuance how a tradition can become a self-conscious heritage and national icon. In 2009, Quan Họ Bắc Ninh Folk Songs was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Defining and reframing quan họ as cultural heritage has further complicated the relationship between village and professional quan họ and raises crucial issues about who has the authority to speak for quan họ in the international context. Sounding Out Heritage offers an in-depth account of the impact of cultural politics on the lives and practices of quan họ folk singers in Vietnam and shows compellingly how a tradition can mean many things to many people.

Book Heritage Conservation and Tourism Development at Cham Sacred Sites in Vietnam

Download or read book Heritage Conservation and Tourism Development at Cham Sacred Sites in Vietnam written by Quang Dai Tuyen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-13 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book considers the growing field of heritage tourism from community perspectives. It explores how the Cham—Vietnam’s large ethnic minority—reconcile their needs for economic development with the boundaries circumscribed by their traditional culture. It examines struggles that local minority stakeholders like the Cham face when trying to participate in areas of development that typically fall under State control. How will tourism affect the ancient sacred spaces that are the Cham’s lifeblood? In what areas is their participation permitted? From what areas are they excluded? Through a novel mix of indigenous methods, participant observation, local voices, and rich ethnographic description, this book provides a rare glimpse into the discourses that have been percolating throughout the community in recent years. The relevance of this study extends beyond the Cham community, and aims to resonate with experiences of the myriad indigenous and minority communities around the world who face similar issues with heritage conservation and tourism development. This book is of interest to students and researchers of heritage studies, tourism management, cultural studies, Asian studies, as well as policymakers, and academicians seeking current research on the connections between culture, conservation, sustainable development, and tourism.

Book From the City Inside the Red River

Download or read book From the City Inside the Red River written by Đình Hoà Nguyễn and published by McFarland. This book was released on 1999 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born on January 17, 1924, Nguyen-Dinh-Hoa grew up in Hanoi never imagining the war that would ultimately divide his country and throw the region into chaos. As he grew into manhood, he witnessed Vietnam gain its independence in 1945, and like many men of his age he was swept up with the revolutionary mood that engulfed the entire country. Eager to do his part for the newly emerging Vietnam, he applied for and received a scholarship to Union College in Schenectady, New York. This resulted in an English degree and a teaching position at the University of Saigon. Since childhood, the author has been keenly observant of everyday life, particularly the interactions between himself, his family and their community. His precise account of midcentury Vietnam provides a detailed picture of a beautiful country with a rich cultural heritage, and serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating effects of the war in Vietnam on its people.

Book Museum Making in Vietnam Laos and Cambodia

Download or read book Museum Making in Vietnam Laos and Cambodia written by Jonathan Paquette and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-06-07 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on archival work undertaken in France and fieldwork undertaken in Southeast Asia, Museum-Making in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia provides a critical analysis of museum histories and development in three former colonial territories. This work documents the development of museums in French Indochina (1862-1954), specifically Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. The book explores the colonial culture of exhibition, traces the growth of museum collections through archaeological missions to Indochina and other parts of Asia, and examines the role of museums in the cultural life of this colonial society. In particular, the author re-contextualizes the role and part played by colonial museums in the implementation of heritage policies during the colonial era in French Indochina, a dimension that is often overlooked. Additionally, the book addresses the effects that the Second World War, the Vichy Regime, and the Japanese occupation had on these cultural institutions. The transformation of these museums in post-independence Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia is also discussed. Providing comparisons with other colonial and post-colonial experiences, Museum-Making in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia will be a valuable resource for researchers in museum and heritage studies. It will also appeal to researchers and graduate students engaged in the study of history, anthropology, sociology, political science, and development and international studies.
