Book The Northern Face of Cyprus

Download or read book The Northern Face of Cyprus written by Lâtife Summerer and published by Ege Yayinlari. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is an attempt to correct the imbalance in research created by exclusion of Northern Cyprus from the international scholarship over forty years. It aims for a balanced approach on two levels: the Turkish contributions are offset by contributions from scholars of foreign origins and the contributions of established scholars by those of promising young researchers who are publishing their first papers. The volume is arranged in three thematic sections. The first one looks at the archaeology of Cyprus from the Prehistoric to the Byzantine periods and includes analytical studies, sites and monuments, new excavation results, and research history. The second section covers the Medieval and Early Modern monuments of Northern Cyprus. And the third section consists of three papers on the protection and conservation of cultural heritage of Northern Cyprus. A total of twenty-six papers are accompanied by colour illustrations in 492 pp.

However, both sides take pride in a shared "Cypriotness," and are united in their common hopes, pain, memories, music, excellent cuisine, rich history, and majestic landscape. Culture Smart! Cyprus equips you with essential information on the history, values, and attitudes of the people you will meet, their customs and traditions, and offers tips on etiquette and socializing. Book In a Contested Realm

Download or read book In a Contested Realm written by Allan Langdale and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Allan Langdale's guide to the archaeology and historical architecture of northern Cyprus surveys the remarkable history of one of the most culturally rich regions in the world. Given the area's isolation, especially since 1974, such a book is a welcome resource as more people discover this virtually lost quarter of the Mediterranean. One can explore the ruins of ancient towns dating back 6000 years, descend into monumental tombs from the Bronze Age, and investigate centuries-old churches and monasteries, while also being delighted by marvelous sights such as an elegant 14th century French gothic cathedral, now a mosque, situated on the seashore merely 100 miles from the coast of Syria. This book is more than a guide. Langdale's text enlivens the archaeological sites and ancient buildings with the rich historical contexts relevant to each monument. Liberally augmented by compelling accounts of ancient voyagers, and generously illustrated by the author's own photographs, this book is a must read for anyone contemplating a trip to the northern part of Cyprus. The extraordinary depth of history in this region has been ebbing from our consciousness for decades, preempted by Cyprus's acutely contemporary political issues. This book gives new life to the area's long architectural heritage, surveying prehistoric settlements, Greco-Roman cities, Byzantine castles, Gothic cathedrals, and village shrines situated in landscapes laden with history; all supplemented by the personal testimonies of travelers throughout the centuries. Langdale's text - accessible, enthusiastic and learned at once - is an invaluable 'Open Sesame' to the riches of the region and should be in every visitor's backpack. He makes each footstep an adventure in time. Annemarie Weyl Carr, University Distinguished Professor of Art History Emerita, Southern Methodist University. Allan Langdale's Guide is a hugely important study of great interest to anyone with a passion for this Mediterranean island and its magnificent cultural heritage. Written with a deep knowledge of the field, and harnessed to an obvious personal passion for the art and architecture of Cyprus, Langdale has brought these exquisite monuments back to life. The book is a must read for scholars and amateur explorers alike. - Associate Professor Michael J. K. Walsh, School of Art, Design and Media, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Informative and wide ranging. Allan Langdale knows what he is writing about: he has a close knowledge of the sites and buildings he describes, and what shines through is his enthusiasm and commitment. - Professor Peter Edbury, School of History, Archaeology and Religion, Cardiff University.

Book Between Cultural Diversity and Common Heritage

Download or read book Between Cultural Diversity and Common Heritage written by Silvio Ferrari and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Going beyond the more usual focus on Jerusalem as a sacred place, this book presents legal perspectives on the most important sacred places of the Mediterranean. The first part of the book discusses the notion of sacred places in anthropological, sociological and legal studies and provides an overview of existing legal approaches to the protection of sacred places in order to develop and define a new legal framework. The second part introduces the meaning of sacred places in Jewish, Christian and Islamic thought and focuses on the significance and role that sacred places have in the three major monotheistic religions and how best to preserve their religious nature whilst designing a new international statute. The final part of the book is a detailed analysis of the legal status of key sacred places and holy cities in the Mediterranean area and identifies a set of legal principles to support a general framework within which specific legal measures can be implemented. The book concludes with a useful appendix for the protection of sacred places in the Mediterranean region. Including contributions from leading law and religion scholars, this interesting book will be valuable to those in the fields of international law, as well as religion and heritage studies.
