The author mentions a language barrier between both regions of the world but he does not describe what is behind the negotiation in international institutions. I think you can not solve problems together on an international level without knowledge of the other culture and the possible problems during negotiations. That is the reason why I will write about cultural problems between different cultures during negotiations. Furthermore, I will describe the possible reasons for distinctive behaviour of a culture. As example I have chosen America, Japan and Germany. America because this country represents the strongest economy and the American culture is something like a symbol of world wide mass culture. Japan is interesting because it is totally different to the American style of culture and it is a good example to show more deeply the main problems in conversations and human behaviour. Germany is my personal background and I believe that I can compare and contrast the differences to the other two cultures.

Those skills will not only be considered by employers in the selection process of a new employee, but are also crucial when trying to successfully accomplish an International Project. The success of a project depends on the cooperation of the project team. Already in national projects misunderstanding and conflicts arise. In international teams this danger is bigger due to cultural differences, which – besides of big distances and different time zones - bear different patterns of thinking and acting, languages, norms and values. An example is a telephone conference between a German and a Japanese staff. The German is informing that he is still waiting for the figures of the last quarter and asking when he will receive them. The Japanese is answering that it will be a little bit difficult. The German is telling that he can understand his situation and points out that he requires the figures by end of this week. The Japanese is answering that he will try. The conclusion of this communication is that the German cannot understand that the Japanese is not able to supply the figures. He feels to be taken not seriously. On the other hand the Japanese cannot understand that the German does not understand that he is not able to supply the requested figures. He feels stalemate and under pressure. That is a typical example of a German-Japanese communication error - the direct versus the indirect communication stile. In German we tend to hear what indeed has been said. Difficult means difficult and is solvable, if you are only willing. In Japan difficult can eventually means difficult, but in the most cases it means infeasible. In order to avoid, handle and solve such cultural differences within International Project teams and thus to ensure a successfully accomplishment of a project the possession of soft skills is getting more and more important in today’s world.

In the study the sample consisted of 119 persons in middle management positions (82 male and 37 female), 60 persons with work experience in Japan and 59 without experience. Participants were asked to complete a questionnaire regarding 52 leadership characteristics (e.g. the ability to assert oneself, to cooperate or to delegate) within five cultural dimensions. Participants then rated the importance of this characteristic for the specific category. Findings of the study showed significant differences in experienced and estimated management styles between the countries as well as significances regarding management traits of the german culture after working in Japan. The logic of global expansion means that ever more employees are working together with colleagues from other countries on projects they need to finish ever more rapidly. And ensuring rigorous and precise international project management requires knowledge of intercultural differences, experience in intercultural communication as well as good collaboration and team development. Most problems in intercultural projects do not arise because of wrong objectives or management techniques, but because of intercultural misunderstandings. Objectives HSH Nordbank AG assesses projects based on compliance with planned levels of budget, time, and quality. Unfortunately, actual results often deviate significantly from target figures. This is especially the case with international projects. The question thus arises whether such variations result from intercultural differences and, if so, how project managers might diminish the likelihood of their occurrence—or even use them to their advantage. The aim of this thesis is to highlight the significant role played by cultural differences in international projects and to evaluate the impact of those cultural differences on the international projects of HSH Nordbank AG. After compiling and evaluating the opportunities and risks associated with cultural difference, I will then recommend several courses of action, outline a target concept, and assess its economic benefits. Scope Due to the limited scope of this thesis, I will be unable to address all the aspects relevant to project management. At present time, the teams are predominantly composed of members from Germany, the USA, England, Singapore, and Denmark. For this reason, I will focus on these cultures in particular.
